  • Knox Honister Jacket | AAA rated motorcycle jacket from KNOX
This video is our presentation of the Knox Honister AAA rated motorcycle jacket. The Honister is the pinnacle of the Knox armoured shirt collection achieving the highest rated AAA approval, and is our most protective motorcycle jacket. Featuring brand new Knox developed fabrics for ultimate strength, abrasion resistance and breathability. The Honister is fitted with new discreet Micro-Lock Compact Level 2 armour on the shoulders and elbows and full Level 2 back protector.

The Honister Pass, situated in the UK Lake District, is one of those roads that needs to be ridden to be appreciated. Connecting Buttermere Valley with Borrowdale Valley, it winds its way to a height of over 1150 feet and is rightly regarded as a piece of motorcycling Nirvana.
Being the mountain pass that is closest to the Knox HQ, it was inspirational to the creation of the Knox Honister jacket. The Highest Performance and pinnacle of the Knox armoured shirt collection.
First invented by the brand in the 1990s, Knox armoured shirts are at the very heart of the Knox collection and the Honister Jacket is the new pinnacle. Wearing a close-fitting armoured shirt is the best way to protect a rider, since the armour is comfortably held in the right place when you need it.
Making the Honister jacket was a tough development journey. Since our goal was to develop the Honister to the highest Class AAA for riders seeking the best performance, it required entirely new and strong fabrics.
Achieving CE approval to Class AAA is no small achievement. AAA is the highest class for a motorcycle protective garment and is usually only attained by one- and two-piece leather suits.
The protection fitted is the all-new Knox Micro-Lock compact armour. This uses SMART technology to keep the armour super soft to touch but it locks when impacted, delivering fantastic protection. The locking action increases the amount of impact absorbed by the protector and reduces the energy passed through to the rider in the event of a crash. This Micro-Lock compact armour used in the Knox Honister Jacket is approved to Level 2 in the shoulders and elbows and features a full length Level 2 Back Protector. It can be complemented with an optional chest protector.
The Honister Jacket has been designed from the ground up. This includes everything, from the way it is tailored and cut to the way the fabrics perform. Construction has been carefully developed to be as comfortable in the harshest of environments as it would be on a gentle spin in the country. Extra attention to detail completes the style and the AAA approval is highlighted on the jacket.
Developing new mesh fabrics which deliver the ultimate strength and resilience has been achieved without sacrificing breathability. Blending this with the hardest wearing stretch polyamide, riders can be confident in the protective qualities of the Honister Jacket in all environments.
All the zips in the Honister jackets are by YKK. There are two zipped side pockets and one zipped large pocket on the back. Detailing continues with discreet Knox branding on the front hem as well as on the back. The new branded badge on the sleeve comes with a reflective surround, complemented by reflective strips which are only visible at night. Thumb loops are found on the cuffs for added security, while an improved security belt loop system is fitted on the inside so that riders can secure their trousers to the jacket. Even the collar has a soft interior for comfort around the neck.
The Honister is available in S - 5XL in mens XS-3xl in Womens. The Honister is part of the Knox Seasonless Collection. Knox Seasonless is about being able to use one outfit throughout the year and adapting it to overcome all conditions. Start with an armoured shirt like the Honister as core protection, then add another layer from the collection to adapt to changing conditions. Knox Seasonless is adaptable, more sustainable, and protective.

I’ve only had it for a month, and in the winter I plan to wear it under my leather jacket. What I love most about what Knox does is that the armor stays where it should. Nothing is fiddly and you feel extremely secure.

I have one of your competitors AAA shirt, which like a light denim jacket. It is epic, and will be looking at your product (which seems even lighter and less bulky than what I have). Only wear my leather gear on the track, where it is mandated and wish track operators would wise up so AAA rated non-leather gear is permitted, as my *stars track suit is probably less safe than the AAA gear I have

As a Knox customer, I think it looks like a solid jacket. I own the lowly action shirt with upgraded level 2 armour. I wear it under leathers.
One correction though, AAA is not the highest rating. EN 13595 is still active until September this year. Then it will be replaced by BSI 13595. 13595 level 1 is significantly more stringent than EN 17092 AAA and level 2 is almost twice is stringent.
Textiles, jeans and of course leathers are available that are certified to EN 13595 level 2. I own several of each. Companies that emphasize safety still get their kit certified to level 2. And some even do both EN 17092 AAA and EN 13595 level 1 or 2.
Putting performance grade cowhide in the same category as any textile kit is very misleading.

    • @KnoxArmour
      @KnoxArmour  Рік тому +3

Hi Martin, thanks for the comment and continued support!
Re the comments on CE performance, AAA is the highest rating of EN17092, which is the correct, mandatory and most developed standard for motorcycle PPE.
You are right that the old EN13595 professional standard will lapse this year. Whether or not this would be replaced by a new BS standard is pure speculation at this point.
AAA was designed for 1 or 2 piece leathers, so it is not misleading in any way to say that textile products approved to AAA are in the same category as the category that was designed for leathers. Thanks, Aaron KNOX

@@KnoxArmour Thanks for the reply. I could write an essay on all the problems specifically with the Darmstadt abrasion test (AART, developed in the 80's). It was developed way before the industry standard Cambridge machine. Unlike the Cambridge machine it was never peer reviewed as being suitable. Sure, the Cambridge test isn't perfect. I'd add a significant impact to make it more relevant. The Darmstadt machine has even less "impact". Call it just an abrasion test. There's no impact from 10mm.
Suffice it to say that the biggest problem with EN17092 is that you don't get much information, except it passed or failed. This is just about useless for R&D and not very informative for customers.
MOTOCAP is the only source I trust because they test to failure - or 10 seconds, whichever comes first - and publish unbiased independent results. Unfortunately, they've never tested any Knox kit. However, the picture is clear that even the AAA rated nylon textiles are failing at about 2 seconds. Some get 4 seconds with multiple layers. Whereas leathers in single layers achieve about 4-7 seconds and double layers max out at 10 seconds and the test stops. In studies where they tested to failure, double cowhide was getting 12-25 seconds.
If I were to offer a constructive suggestion, I'd make a vastly improved Honister Pro with low-friction caps on the shoulders and elbows, similar in concept to Knox SPS sliders. This won't be tested by CE but in the real world it would potentially give the Honister repeat crash performance in any significant impact and subsequent slide.

@@martinfoster5163 Thanks for reply. Clearly you know best Martin... we've only been doing this for 40+ years and working on standards committees for over 28, so of course know nothing about the matter :)... All the best, Aaron KNOX

@@KnoxArmour Like Martin, I’m a Knox customer who likes elbow and shoulder sliders. They add significant abrasion resistance (which matters for even AAA textiles) and - when well-designed - can look stylish.
And while we all know that decent leathers trump textiles (let’s not pretend otherwise), kudos to Knox for developing AAA rated textile kit. Often, it’s too wet or too hot for leathers. With the Honister, Knox has shown up more than a few competitors that have yet to launch AAA-certified textiles. It’s good to see a British company at the leading edge - showing that a AAA textile jacket is possible without costing over a grand like Klim, Hideout, etc.
