Funny thing; for the rest of us Scandinavians, foreigners mispronouncing danish is easier to understand than actual danish.

Lucky! I'm English, but my mother's family a few generations back are Danish. Trying to rediscover my Danish roots by learning Danish.

non-danish here, seems like the rules for pronouncing danish are:
1. you can just say the first half of the word, and then kind of give up as you get toward the end
2. when in doubt, you can replace any syllable with "ørlðl"

I really enjoyed this video. One thing I don't understand is: why don't they (or you, videomaker) leave the word on screen? For non-native viewers, that could've helped in figuring out the pronunciation better. :-) My two cents.
I lived in England for years and some of the favourite Danish words of my English ex was grydelapper and forklæde. I love my language for it's silly back of the throat pronunciations.

Oh yeah, let's make a word that is pronounced completely different from its writing
Adolfo Pross it’s because the letters are pronounced differently in Denmark, smart ass.
It's not because the letters are different it's because of accent, and since the words don't age and talking does IT'S GOING TO BE DIFFERENT -smart- *Dumb ass*

How did the German dude have so much trouble with this? I can understand those Danish/Norwegian letters... But the rest? Its not THAT far from the German language.
I speak both languages and i disagree
Tegnet German has a very different pool of potential sounds, with more ch, k, and "harsh" sound, while Danish has more "soft" sounds.
On top of that Danish just has fucked up vowels, and the "soft" g's and d's are something I haven't heard in other languages, even Norwegian (though I might be incorrect here).
Source: I speak Danish natively and I am learning German.
(Get ready for potential mistakes, because I wrote this quite late)
@@mawita867 Several dialects of Norwegian have those soft consonants, but no, it's not very common. And some of those dialects are being watered out, so the soft consonants are getting more and more rare. And most of the soft consonants are also pretty different from the danish soft consonants.

This is no joke, it is hard to pronounce danish words, but you'll get the hang of it
In 2089
it's fascinating to me how the danish /ð/ sound is so often heard as an /l/ to untrained listeners. i'd love to read more on this
You can find a lot of info about Danish pronunciation here: www.babbel.com/en/magazine/danish-pronunciation/ Enjoy :)
In my opinion the people in the video would sound more "Danish" if they instead of pronouncing the soft d's as hard d's, just ignored the "d's"... that what people from Jutland do...
Isn't that sound very similar to the English "th" in words like "the"?
@@ahlpym similar enough that phonetic alphabets use the same letter for either sound, yes.
@@ahlpym Yes, but with that classic glottal stop characteristic of stød. The thing with English phonology is that /l/ near the end of syllables is often 'dark'. A plain [l] is a so-called 'light L', while the 'dark L' is slightly velarised [lˠ] or [ɫ]. English speakers neither notice that their L's can be velarised, nor do they make a distinction between a voiced velar fricative and a glottal stop, even if some dialects like Australian English use a dark L in almost all positions.
Because the stød [ðˀ] and [lˠ] both have the vocal folds and the tongue positioned similarly, English speakers will treat the stød as the sound that's closest in their own language. It also happens that stød often occurs in Danish near the end of syllables, just exactly where you would expect a dark L in English.
If there is one thing we danish people love, it's watching non-danish speakers trying to say danish words
No need to list those tricky words, I can't even pronounce "brød" 😂 Although I almost nailed it the first time I saw gulerodskage in this vid. 😆
