  • Around the time of the Irish Famine, Workhouses were built to house the starving, destitute and diseased population, giving them food and shelter in return for basic work.
This particular workhouse was built in the 1850s and was subsequently burned down by the IRA during the Irish Civil War of the 1920s. They burned down many large houses to prevent the British forces from using them as army barracks.
Apart from the missing roof and upstairs floor, this workhouse and mortuary hospital is in very good condition. The walls are intact, and some of the ancillary buildings and walled yards are still standing. Much of the structures are hidden beneath vines and ivy.
