I’m 80 and in September 1976 my wife and I decided to drive from St Paul to Clearwater Lake on Cook County Road 66 near the Gunflint Trail. Our 1965 Chev Pickup had a slide in camper and was pulling a Lund VFR 15 Fish & Ski with a Mercury 50 hp. When I finally drove about 300 miles to the Clearwater Lake public access, I had to back the trailer down a steep unpaved incline to launch the boat. We only caught one small walleye but the lake was calm with no boats or cottages making it very peaceful and quiet. As I recall the shoreline had beatiful hills and cliffs with dense boreal forests.
Thanks! It's so beautiful and quiet there. I'm surprised more people don't take the drive, but that's probably a good thing. Wish I would have seen a moose, but I'll try again. Thanks for watching and subscribing, much appreciated!
@@stinkleberryfarmer have you ever camped on a Minnesota state School Trust Swamp Forest section of land? I know that school trust land is free dispersed camping if it is in a "state forest" but there is mention that school trust land can be "forested" without it being technically being a "state forest." The statute states that free camping is in forested land - so I think it should be legal to camp in the school trust swamp land also. hahahaha. thanks
I've never heard of it before, but sounds like something to check out. Years ago you could just pull over in the woods off of a dirt road up there and not even be bothered. Thanks for the idea.
@@stinkleberryfarmer Nice, big group of the family is taking up there towards end of summer, thing we took almost all their cabins and camp spots. I’m excited. Thanks for the video. I always want to make videos of our time but I don’t like the editing process (not easy)
Shame ya didn't get to see a rare moose on this trip, but ya sure got to see one of the kajillion loud, untrained dogs that selfish people bring to campgrounds. Ya handled it a lot calmer than I would've. Guess they can't all be as well-behaved as Jessie (spelling?). Outside of that it looked like a real nice trip to a real beautiful area!
Yeah, Im always amazed how some people at campgrounds treat it like their own personal property and just let their dogs go crazy. A moose is still the empty spot on my camping bingo card. Im heading way up north next week and my fingers are crossed. Thanks!
I definitely need to take this trip.

That would have so beautiful. I bet there very few people and would have been peaceful. Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it!
Nice job. I've lived on the Gunflint Trail for 8 years now, very close to the Laurentian Divide you stopped at.

Wonderful area of the world!
Thanks!
I was in that area 3 months ago. I recognized all the places. That part of the state is my favorite
Its a beautiful area, was really hoping to see a moose. I plan on going back at some point. Thanks Tincan for watching and subscribing!
Virginia Rail is that bird - pretty sure. I've never seen one before except in books. thanks!
Thanks so much for letting me know!

There is restaurants on the east end of the Gunflint.
Ditch that frigg'n dog! There are some great places to eat on the GF. lodges serve, and Trail Center is half way up...good food.
I plan on going back, so I just might check them out. Thanks!
Great!
What campground were you staying at? Looks nice!
Gunflint Pines resort, owner was really nice and the place was simple but wonderful, just how I like it. Thanks for watching!

Can we Atv ride?
Not sure. Lots of open road, but also next to alot of national forest land, so might be highly regulated. Thanks for watching!
