Situated approximately 100 km (64 Mi) north east of Nottingham lies the town of Skegness. Known locally as the home of “Butlins. The station of the same name serves the town and was first constructed and opened in July 1873.
The opening of the station - on the so called “Poacher” line and forms the terminus of the line. Initially the Wainfleet and Firsby Railway built a line to Wainfleet opening in October 1871, then extended to Skegness some almost 2 years later.
Skegness railway station is now owned by Network Rail, with the day to day management being under the remit of East Midlands Railway, who also provide all rail services to and from Nottingham.
Skegness is also affectionately known as “ The Blackpool of the East Coast” and “Nottingham by the sea”.
In tribute to its heritage as a fishing village Skegness also has a mascot. That of “The Jolly Fisherman”, a statue of whom welcomes visitors disembarking the station. This wonderful sculpture was in fact commissioned by the Great Northern Railway in 1908 and created by John Hassall.
The site also boasted a goods yard and sheds up until 1966, but together with platform 1 was demolished in the early 1980’s. The space was converted into a car park, now used by local offices.
A short distance from the Skegness station is the Seacroft station, opened in 1873. Opened in 1873 with the name “Cow Bank”, this was re-named to Seacroft in October 1900. Sadly the station was closed in 1953 due to lack of use, even goods services only lasted until 1964, at which point even these services were ceased. The line remains open nevertheless.
Those services which were hauled by a locomotive had to be suspended due to frequent buckling of the rails, The last loco hauled service was in 2006, only to resume when Network Rail embarked on a track renewal programme.
As far as facilities at the station are concerned, there are toilets with baby change table, specialist support for the disabled and a small stall with refreshments and news agency items. The ticket office is partially manned with a TVM (ticket vending machine ) allowing for the provision of tickets when the office is unattended.
Of all the platforms originally built six remain. Numbered 2 through 7.Of the six, platforms 2 and 7 are no longer used and the only platforms that see regular use are Platforms 3 and 4.
There are regular services to Nottingham via Grantham, with some services direct to Nottingham. There are also good links to other parts of the country One may connect to trains to London at Grantham (kings Cross via the East Coast Main Line) or to London St Pancras via the Midland Main Line from Nottingham.
In addition to this there are good links to local public transport, with the bus station next to the station - and taxi rank outside the front of the station.

Network Rail should reopen the section to Louth and Grimsby and a new spur line to connect from the newly built line from Louth to the Skegness branch line. As Louth used to have a railway station before it was demolished in the 1960s because of the Beeching Cuts.

I always thought it hilarious when passengers bought a ticket for Skegness at Kings Lynn, especially when they bought it at 7pm in the evening! They would arrive at around 8am, an epic 11 hour journey to get to their holiday...

The Wherry Lines in Norfolk used to have semaphore signalling before Network Rail replaced them with new state-of-the-art 21st Century LED signalling.
