When I visited Malaysia in 2009 and 2014, I had quite a lot of bootleg DVDs, and I honestly still kind of love them because of that. One thing I need to mention is that I absolutely adore the DVDR versus DVD Scratch video of, it always plays at the start of these. It’s super nostalgic for me. Can I just say hearing you say night markets is making me feel things. My god, I miss being there, I constantly talk about it with my mother and her partner who we went to Malaysia to go and visit, it’s essentially a second Home for me and I would love to go again, so goddamn much. I stayed in KL and in 2014, we were staying in pachong.
Spot on. It's a big issue in here. And it's not only limited to anime but manga as well. A lot of "merchants" in Shopee selling bootleg manga.. it's surreal. These folks are stealing IPs and selling it to the uninformed masses. It's sad.
This video was very entertaining, and it was fascinating to see the perspective of someone actually from Malaysia. I’m guilty of buying the Lambeim Filem Pokemon B/W and XY box sets knowing they were bootlegs but was fine with it ‘cause it’s they’re the only DVDs in existence with Japanese audio and English subs and I bought them because the English dub is ass.
Hopefully you're still using this account. I'm thinking buying the Pokemon Malaysian Bootlegs for the same reason, the dub sucks and there's no other way of owning the original english subbed series with the original sound track. Since you've bought them, I've got a couple of questions: Are the subtitles accurate? Is the quality good? Thanks 🙂
@@jt7185 Best Wishes set in particular has an issue where the earlier episodes are either competently subbed (for the most part, whoever did them slipped a few “damns” in there for some reason) and then sometimes the episodes have loose hastily translated subtitles, which I chock up to the fansubs for Pokemon pretty much getting its real start with Best Wishes. After a dozen or so episodes though that problem goes away, and competent subtitles carry into later sets with XY and soforth. And the picture quality is on par with Viz Media/Beyond/Shock’s official DVDs of the dub, in other words decent enough. Hope this helps!
@@k3ylimeash370 I was only planning on buying the XY and SM series, so knowing that the subtitles and quality is great is good news. Thanks for letting me know pal 🙂
Ugg I get that feeling. If it makes you feel even 1% better, I have recently discovered that I have bought about $500 of bootleg anime and video game soundtracks on the past 6 months... I suppose educating others is the best we can do to mend our situation and prevent others for falling for bootlegs.
These bootlegs may look to real Malaysians, but as a American, it’s obvious someone had to of drop the soap in the process of these dvds. Really though, I don’t feel bad sometimes, no one shouldn’t have to pay over $100 to legally own 22 episodes of your lie in april, when you can get something like 200 something episodes of the office for less than that.
Eh I can agree with this to an extent. In general the Japanese animation industry does their best to produce high quality shows knowing that they'll have to work very hard and trust their dedicated fans to purchase their dvds/blurays for a premium. The high prices seem to be normalized with native Japanese fans, but overseas (like the US where I live), these prices are often much higher than western produced shows because western produced shows seem to have very different means of making money off their media, leading to lower dvd and bluray prices. In my opinion, if the legit price is to high, it's much better to find a free option (like downloads) than to purchase physical bootlegs and support illigitimate companies with no intention to support the original creators.
@@ShiitaKitsune64 I don’t know, objectively speaking, the budget for American television is way higher, however most of it is spent on recognizable celebrities over amping up the quality so I don’t know how well that translates to home video releases. I don’t think viewing the show itself is the issue, you can pretty much watch anything with a subscription that’ll cost $10 at most. When I buy a dvd or blu ray, I just want the show to be added to my personal archive. I understand that taboo’s of pirating, but as a person in the creative field. I think it’s ridiculous to try profiting off something I made long ago. If I try to overprice anything I made something hypothetically around 10 years ago, I would just be milking and manipulating the consumer.
@@Gamingbrothers-ve4br I think what you're saying is you can understand higher prices for newer media (like within the last one or two years), but you don't like that studios still sell older media at premium prices (when talking about anime it's probably much more the studio than the individual artists that are deciding prices). That I can definetly understand, although like I said I still think it would be better to find a free way of watching the show instead of supporting bootleggers. I would rather someone burn their own dvds of freely obtained pirited media (not to sell of course) instead of supporting bootleggers that specifically run their business to decive many innocent/ignorant buyers. At least that way you can always save your money to buy the real deal later, or support the artist's other works. And you can reduce the number of bootlegs out there so more people will purchase the legitimate items. Sometimes bootleg issues are so bad that legit anime studios may not want to even try to sell legit copies in that country because they know they couldn't compete. Just so you know I have definitely dowloaded my fair share of anime and manga back in the day, and I have very recently accidently bought bootleg anime/game soundtracks (like $500 worth, I'm so pissed lol), so I'm not trying to be accusatory. From my understanding it's best to at least just save your money for the real deal.
Omg thank you for such an entertaining video! I needed this after my own recent discovery of purchasing bootleg anime and video game soundtracks (one I paid $160 usd for, not knowing it was a bootleg! My fragile weeaboo heart is dead!). I had also just realized that many of the anime soundtracks I have purchased throught 10 years were also bootlegs, which probably desensitized me from understanding what a bootleg is or isn't, and not even realizing there was a problem in the first place. As the anime industry grows and more and more innocent people are converted to weeaboos through perfect waifus and husbandos, lets hope that legitimate anime industries extend their reach to more countries. Although it is very unlikely that we will know the exact profits these bootleg companies make, I'm sure they make thousands of dollars a year, thousands of dollars legit anime companies could tap into.
So, one small caveat to this whole thing -- I am 100% in favor of buying and supporting anime through legal means and spend a LOT of money doing just that every year. However, I am often dismayed by the amount of anime that streams in the West but never gets a licensed physical release here. Some of my favorite anime of recent years -- Oresuki, Seton Academy, GokuDolls, Uzaimaid -- are streaming-exclusive and only available legally to viewers here for as long as Crunchyroll and Netflex choose to keep them on the air, which is a nightmare for preservation and access. Malaysia's bootleg DVDs are the only physical editions of these available outside of $300 untranslated Japanese blurays with no English subtitles, and nuts that that! The quality of the Malaysian DVDs ain't great, but it does at least provide a copy of the anime on a physical disc that collectors and enthusiasts can keep and watch for as long as the DVD itself holds up. TLDR: Always support official anime releases whenever possible, but if the license-holders make getting a licensed physical version in your language functionally impossible, then that's on them and fans should feel relatively guilt free about sailing the high seas.
The way this channel and video popped out in my recommended just after I was browsing eBay for Hellsing anime dvds (you would be amazed how many times Hellsing was released in various editions and sets and from various publishers over the years, but I digress) and I SAW THESE BOOTLEGS from Malaysian sellers! I was like, : "Holly shit, they are just shamelessly running this massive bootleg business like no one can come after their asses for this! They are offering them to me, who lives in EU, with 5.99 USD standard shipping. 38 sold, 1 left. Holly shit." So it's not even Malaysia's local problem. Since they are selling them all over the world, it's everyone's problem. Like you said in the video, many inexperienced fans can and do believe that these releases are supporting the Anime industry, and not taking away from it. They might not buy otherwise. These DVD's are so obviously bootlegs though, but they clearly make effort to give the impression of quality and look fancy from the outside. No one can check the inside and the quality of the video beforehand, afterall. I was actually mad enough to contact eBay about this, to see if eBay cares, and if an eBay store I came across that sells only these bootleg dvds can be suspended. The customer support guy said that: If proven that the seller is selling a fake or not authentic item, we take serious action to their accounts which can lead to severe suspension.Of course, we have to verify first if the item is indeed authentic or not. Please keep in mind that if you encounter such buying experience, you have this buyer protection secured and guaranteed. When you purchase an item on eBay and you believe that it's not authentic, you are covered under our eBay Money Back Guarantee Program. With the said buyer protection, you can return the item to the seller even if they listed it with no returns. But if ever this really happens and the item gets returned, it's the seller who covers the return shipping costs. So if anyone got tricked into buying bootlegs like this from eBay, you know what to do. They might even not bother with the returns, since the seller has to pay it, and just refund. About the eBay store that I reported, he said that he sent an investigation request to whoever deals with those in eBay. So I guess, we will see if the store gets suspended. The eBay store is (ttps://www.ebay.com/usr/twodimensiondvd?_trksid=p2047675.l2559) btw.
I bought a Malaysian bootleg set of Maho Girls Precure/Mahou Tsukai Precure a few years ago or so. I don't remember everything about it (gave it to my friend to borrow and she never returned it, IDC though), and I'll admit I watched MAYBE 3-5 minutes worth of it, IDR, but I DO remember: -It's a ~52 episode series, and there was 3 or 4 discs. I think one disc had 16-19 episodes on it. -The episodes (at least the first) were TV recordings, and they blurred out the channel logo in the top right. --(I'll let those above 2 speak for quality. Don't remember it looking amazing, at least on my big TV. I think even the menu was JPEG-y) -The ending (maybe opening too?) songs weren't subtitled in English. What subtitles I did see seemed fluent, not sure how accurate they were. -The case might've had some of those cardboard flaps that open out from the side. I think the insides had nice artwork, at least one official piece of art if not all /inside/? I think they had DVD molds inside for it but IDR. They also randomly threw in one of those bootleg dvds of one of the Certain Scientific Railgun movies in one of those cheap plastic sleeves. There's more I kinda wanna and may or may not say here (at least about the video) but I'll save that for now. I bought that originally, I think, because Precure is technically non-existent in America and it kinda sucks to see something so popular be like that here, and maybe so I could lend it to said friend (had little internet access). I know I can download them but something about owning it feels nice. Though I guess downloading is always gonna be better than a bootleg in at least my case, if I'm gonna act like I absolutely need to watch it. I'd gladly buy it if it was legally available in English. (IDK if I worded my thoughts and feelings and POV or whatever-all there right)
Oh my god, such a banger video. I used to live in Malaysia around a decade or so ago as a kid, and would always love going to the copy shop to get some new movies (no anime :P). Even though the situation is kind of different, It's really interesting to see such bootlegging continue on a decades later, with black cases and flimsy plastic sleeves and all. And now youse have bootleg Blu-Rays which are just 1 to 1 copies of official disks. That legit blows my mind as a chronic Blu-Ray collector. All in all, 10/100. Video quality was passable, sound was ok, but more importantly, no subtitles at all
Loved the Bullshit Man reference. Great video and saw some Gintama Malaysian DVDs that in all honesty, am considering because there are no Blu-rays or DVDs in the U.S. that have all the episodes
Great video. I think these sets are still popular due to the reasons some us anime license companies are very greedy with the price they ask for for only a handful of episodes vs a whole season. Example is like the SAO official aniplex dvd is $60 for only half the season which is outrageous. Hence these are a cheaper alternative which I am guilty for falling for buying myself.
Oh yeah, I got these type of DVDs for Pokemon, because for the longest time only thing I could legally buy is Kanto, Orange Island, and Master Quest. So I was missing S3/4 and all of Hoenn, and the rest of the series. They're now coming out with legal ones.
First time ever watching your video, and I sensed a James Rolfe influence and then you hit us with the You Know What's Bullshit reference 🤣 Good stuff!
3 years later and bootleg dvds are still being distributed in malaysia and even ebay, i bought a chainsaw man dvd just to give myself the "yup that's bad alright"
I live in the US and unknowingly bought a Malysian bootleg of Initial D from eBay. It's not even good. The subs are terrible and the quality is bad. Fast forward to last week and I got scammed again with Initial D. Local video was selling "import" DVD's made to look like Japanese DVD's but really they were Malaysian bootlegs. Thankfully I got my money back on those.
I unknowingly bought bootlegs back in the early 00s. The hobby shop I purchased them from assured me they were “official” but “imported from Japan” lol. Thought it was kind of weird that some had Chinese on the packaging. Met a big anime fan in college and he called me out on it haha quite embarrassing. I’ve since atoned for my sins and purchased the true Japanese imports 👍
Im an Indonesian. And yes, we have same problem here. I just really hope that we both have legal anime dvd/bluray store which sell original disc. Tbh, it’s kinda rare to buy original dvd/bluray here :)
Thank you, I bought Pokemon Origins DVD on eBay, which was a Malaysia disc brand and I just had to check it up. Thank you for explaining what I bought, I know for next time, thank you
So, i live in germany, and if you go to the german eBay you can find so many ebay-shops that have these DVDs... SO MANY... They all cost around 30 Euros, and thats pretty cheap... I also have those DVDs, because i dont even have to import them, and i also like the design of those boxes... But i really didnt know, that those things are actually bootlegs, so thank you for this video! (I actually dont care if these things are bootlegs, i'm still going to buy them, i was just wondering, why they all are so cheap.) Hope you get more popular, i really like your videos, and more people need to know you!

I’m from the US and I bought these kind of bootlegs online. 😂 I should probably explain the reasoning behind each bootleg I bought. Hyperdimension Neptunia bootleg I bought awhile before I knew the actual bluray by Funimation was happening. Haganai bootleg which came with season 1, 2 and the awful live action movie. I bought because official bluray of season one I only found as overpriced on ebay. I ended up saving the search and over time came across official for affordable price and bought it. Now I can move on to getting the official season two for completion. Both my bootlegs came from ebay. Bro in the vid convinced me to buy DxD bootleg but I have all official ones too now. Just not S4 because I really dislike the art style change.
It depends, you can get english releases on Amazon, ebay and Fundimation (Fundimation is the prime western company releasing Eng anime DVD and Blu-Ray) and for Japanese releases, you can get them on Mandarake, SolarisJapan, Hobbylinkjapan, CdJapan, Play Asia and a few others (Keep note that gettingJapanese Blu-Rays isa whole task in and of itself)
I agree that you should support the official product. But sometimes man.... the prices they set make it real hard to justify. And if I'm being honest, I actually think some of those boxes look pretty snazzy. Most stuff in the states just comes in a crappy paper thin cardboard sleeve with the same art that's on the dvd case, if its not just a bare dvd/bluray case, so many of those malaysian releases ironically have more effort put into them than the official product.
That's what I thought. But in The Philippines, they had a little bit anime titles from the original imported and pressed local release as the motion picture are completely licensed and hardly can't find any titles what they (also me) need to watch, so they were buy some titles in imported releases as US, Canada, UK if it is expensive shipping fees, Japan or Hong Kong could be good enough shipping fee, and if China or Malaysia could be the best way to be choose of a shipping fee, or sometimes, a lot of Filipinos who recently watched on a illegal streaming or the legal tv channels as it dubbed into Filipino language. (But, GODDAMN! You shouldn't born me here this way, god! It's so DISAPPOINTING!) But for me, I'm still looking someone or somewhere where it sells legit and originally imported anime on DVD (but I want NTSC format) in reasonable price if it is local or overseas. And soon, will be give a details of how is it good looking anime on DVD/BRD, if I had to own a DVD Drive and our website.
Your country did have a way more faithful adaption of digimon. The more common saban's english digimon dub is not that serious and is filled with way too many jokes. So sometimes more faithful dubbing can be a plus.
I actually kinda like these more than official dvds. I live in the u.s. and I got a lot of bootleg dvds for 5 bucks each. The official stuff is overpriced so I just got bootlegs instead. For example, Sword Art Online. Got seasons 1, 2, and Alicization for 10 bucks total. Would've costed like 150 dollars now for those 3 seasons on Blu Ray
Hey do you know anything about those Hunter x Hunter 1999 anime bootlegs? This show is out of print so I thought about buying a fake release just to be able to watch it at all. But I don't know about the quality
At least it’s supported by the Government. In Mexico we can’t even get the dub of any anime as official media in Latino since a conglomerate monopolized it and every single tv series or anime can only be gotten in dvd or bluray pirated created by other users, sellers. It’s great quality but doesn’t support the industry. Example: DBZ was officially supported until episode 52 in a rare 5 disc case OOP Latino as Home Media Release in DVD. If you want to get it dubbed it’s predecessor or any series after it can only be found pirated. There’s no DVD or BD official version with dub.
Bought lots of anime dvd bootlegs from hongkong back in the day.. They record lots of anime from Japanese television, sometimes they rip it from laserdiscs or vhs 💀

They should increase the video quality at least by burning more disc per release to make it look real at least. Not more 12 eps per disc for old shows (4/3) and not more than 8 eps for new shows (16/9), but 400-500 mb per episode should be enough. They could use lists and use the opening/ ending ones to save space and increase quality. Maybe I could buy one trashy set myself. LoL PS: I did one or two b00bleg for a friend back in the old days like 15 years ago, with real menus and stuff.
I know some of these people behind these company, the reason these bootleg are higher in quality is because back then authority start to crack down on DVD piracy, so they start to produce high quality bootleg because pirated movie usually come in plactic sleeve and authority usually a bit lazy so they don't really check the boxset if it legit or not. They also make bootleg of tv show like csi.
20:00 I thought you censored that scene before you post your vid, until I see the subtitles over the censored scene. Is this common on bootleg DVD and Blu-ray for anime?
It depends on the anime itself, normally they will show the original Japanese airing which is censored but if they can get a hold of the uncensored one, then the Malaysian Government will tell them to censor it. Interestingly there is a few Bootleg Anime DVD that is uncensored. I made I video on it recently if your interested. ua-cam.com/video/0sWFS2oYdv0/v-deo.html
Honestly if it wasn't for bootlegs, hardly anyone outside of Japan would even know about anime, lol. Years ago not many titles ever got licensed outside of Japan, and even if you could import from Japan, there were no subtitles. China's been serving bootlegs for 30 years or longer, so it's been somewhat normalized. Though nowadays most people watch anime on streaming sites for free, even if most of those sites are "questionable". ;P

Holly shit."
So it's not even Malaysia's local problem.
The customer support guy said that:
If proven that the seller is selling a fake or not authentic item, we take serious action to their accounts which can lead to severe suspension.Of course, we have to verify first if the item is indeed authentic or not.
The eBay store is (ttps://www.ebay.com/usr/twodimensiondvd?_trksid=p2047675.l2559) btw.
these bootlegs have been on eBay all over the place since 2012.
I bought a Malaysian bootleg set of Maho Girls Precure/Mahou Tsukai Precure a few years ago or so. I don't remember everything about it (gave it to my friend to borrow and she never returned it, IDC though), and I'll admit I watched MAYBE 3-5 minutes worth of it, IDR, but I DO remember:
-It's a ~52 episode series, and there was 3 or 4 discs. I think one disc had 16-19 episodes on it.
-The episodes (at least the first) were TV recordings, and they blurred out the channel logo in the top right.
--(I'll let those above 2 speak for quality. Don't remember it looking amazing, at least on my big TV. I think even the menu was JPEG-y)
-The ending (maybe opening too?) songs weren't subtitled in English.
Your video is better than most Malaysian UA-camrs,love it
Truly underrated youtuber
I love this channel!
This video deserves millions of views.
First time ever watching your video, and I sensed a James Rolfe influence and then you hit us with the You Know What's Bullshit reference 🤣
Good stuff!
3 years later and bootleg dvds are still being distributed in malaysia and even ebay, i bought a chainsaw man dvd just to give myself the "yup that's bad alright"
I generally watch these to catch up off wi fi. Zen is out so I plan to see it in May regardless. I watch them on my TV because I want a full screen.
How does this channel only have 820 Subs?
Thank you for explaining what I bought, I know for next time, thank you
These are all over Ebay and I was wondering what they were. I have to admit, the boxes look great! Wish they weren’t unofficial.
(I actually dont care if these things are bootlegs, i'm still going to buy them, i was just wondering, why they all are so cheap.)
Hope you get more popular, i really like your videos, and more people need to know you!
I remember having a Yu Gi Oh bootleg dvd from Malaysia. I was happy with it, but the subtitles were horrible, they just copied them from the terrible Hong Kong DVD's
I bought a bootleg sailor moon collection off eBay because I live in the uk and the only legal sailor moon I could find was sailor moon eternal on Netflix and that was it, no legal dvds or subscriptions so I basically gave in
It so far has worked mostly ok but I have had a few problems
This video content is so great & useful .. thank you very much .. ❤️👍🏻

I wished Malaysia could release some of my favourites Anime Series onto DVD in English Dubbed Languages and only have broadcast in England, America, Canada and Australia like Cardcaptors, Beyblade G Revolution, Spider Riders, Ultimate Muscle and Yo Kai Watch.
love these dvd's! they're an awesome way to watch anime that will never be released in america for a good price SENTAI LOGH and MONOGATARI series looking at you lol
That clip of Tom spinning on the record player sure was funny.
That ending got me XD
It used to be a problem in singapore in the 90s and earlier 2000s before SPF step in and outlaw bootlegs, nowadays, very little people buy physical media
I wish I could say the same, they say the best way to support is buying the Blurays...
The problem is the subtitles, we are forced to cope with the streaming service deciding if they'll have the anime or not
I’m from the US and I bought these kind of bootlegs online. 😂
I should probably explain the reasoning behind each bootleg I bought.
So do you guys know where to find and buy the genuine DVD/BluRay at affordable and trusted price?
16:00 Can you recommend which legal and official sites where I can order original anime DVDs and Blu-rays boxsets overseas?
It depends, you can get english releases on Amazon, ebay and Fundimation (Fundimation is the prime western company releasing Eng anime DVD and Blu-Ray) and for Japanese releases, you can get them on Mandarake, SolarisJapan, Hobbylinkjapan, CdJapan, Play Asia and a few others (Keep note that gettingJapanese Blu-Rays isa whole task in and of itself)
best video on the net
I agree that you should support the official product.
But sometimes man.... the prices they set make it real hard to justify.
And if I'm being honest, I actually think some of those boxes look pretty snazzy. Most stuff in the states just comes in a crappy paper thin cardboard sleeve with the same art that's on the dvd case, if its not just a bare dvd/bluray case, so many of those malaysian releases ironically have more effort put into them than the official product.
Can we bring our personal anime collection into Malaysia when moving to live there?
this is hilarious i love this
Hey,how about manga bootleg publisher in Malaysia
It's so DISAPPOINTING!)
But for me, I'm still looking someone or somewhere where it sells legit and originally imported anime on DVD (but I want NTSC format) in reasonable price if it is local or overseas.

Anyone know if the neon genesis evangelion Malaysian bootlegs are good?
There have I think I am very interested, is there any different between Malaysia version and original Japan version? Since Malaysia is a Islam Country?
They should increase the video quality at least by burning more disc per release to make it look real at least. Not more 12 eps per disc for old shows (4/3) and not more than 8 eps for new shows (16/9), but 400-500 mb per episode should be enough. They could use lists and use the opening/ ending ones to save space and increase quality. Maybe I could buy one trashy set myself. LoL
PS: I did one or two b00bleg for a friend back in the old days like 15 years ago, with real menus and stuff.
The quality is 480p and the frames shudder and people actually sell them🤦🏼♂️

also with bootleg precure dvd too
1 video but so manu issue. please someone give this guy a play button
The SIRIM sticker is also fake

20:00 I thought you censored that scene before you post your vid, until I see the subtitles over the censored scene.
Is this common on bootleg DVD and Blu-ray for anime?
It depends on the anime itself, normally they will show the original Japanese airing which is censored but if they can get a hold of the uncensored one, then the Malaysian Government will tell them to censor it. Interestingly there is a few Bootleg Anime DVD that is uncensored. I made I video on it recently if your interested. ua-cam.com/video/0sWFS2oYdv0/v-deo.html

But those single plastic sleeve ones, there is no excuse.
The only prob with Original Anime Blu-ray is "WHERE'S THE SUB".... 😭😭😭 Cmon...man
Honestly if it wasn't for bootlegs, hardly anyone outside of Japan would even know about anime, lol. Years ago not many titles ever got licensed outside of Japan, and even if you could import from Japan, there were no subtitles. China's been serving bootlegs for 30 years or longer, so it's been somewhat normalized. Though nowadays most people watch anime on streaming sites for free, even if most of those sites are "questionable". ;P
i got from eBay the whole Naruto series in those dreaded white cases with the DVD sleeves. the image is alright, audio is not bad (so far), and the subtitles are good. I also got the whole movie collection, but this one came in an artbox with two blank DVD cases, and the same story regarding the content. I love Naruto to the death and it's one of my favorite pieces of media entertainment out there, but fuck me dude, the originals are nowhere to be found in my country and it costs you an arm and a leg to import them. sorry Kishi, but we live in rough times
