Calling Gerald Undone!! 😂 This is a pretty cool test from a basic angle, but I'd prefer seeing a more standard method to measure dynamic range. Maybe set the camera to auto exposure, max ISO 800, then shoot a dynamic range test card and read the numbers. Of course Sony is the best of the best, and then I think Action 5 would beat other similar range devices.
Listening to everyone whine about bitrate, dynamic range, etc etc. on an action cam is a joke. Get out and film. If you can’t make it look decent when other people can maybe it’s YOU and NOT the camera. Just a thought.
@@pascalbasel Just to be clear, I wasn't aiming this comment at you. It seems the entire internet has lost their minds over bitrate on an action cam. I appreciate your review. Great work with the cam!
they have not officially said that , they said their engineers are working on it , never saying they are going to officially just up the bitrate, There latest comment was that the new chip was engineered to work with low bitrate, ive been following it on dji forums and reddit, where dji post official statements
An update for the bitrate issue is coming, along with some bug fixes (glitching image when used in webcam mode). They are indeed listening to customers.
Thanks for the test! I wouldn't compare DR i'm the ungraded image like that per se because those log transforms are not the same. I'd bring them all into the same color space (likely DaVinci wide gamut / ACES but maybe even your final delivery format using Color Space Transform and disable the DaVinci tone and gamut mapping). Then I'd raise the exposure value so the highlights are all at the same value In general I think your overall conclusion is still about right. Also, it's worth noting that Apple Log still does some noise reduction internally which makes it seem cleaner. Compare some of the footage from the MotionCam app on Android. So although the darks look "cleaner", they're still a bit mushy.
I really2 want know if this Osmo Action 5 Pro can actually record with blur background like your video now? Or snap picture with background blur as well?
I was so disappointed when I got the Hero 12 last year that I sold it directly. So I also didn’t get the 13. It seems like they fixed Log on the GoPro, which was my biggest gripe, but I still decided for DJI. So I can’t directly compare them. They are likely both good cameras.
@@pascalbasel I've heard a lot of complaints about the Hero12, so i might go with the DJI since it's a bit cheaper. I really enjoy your channel, you are an artist. I'm building my channel in an attempt to become a digital nomad. cheers!
It seems these companies get away with advertising technical total, instead of daily useable total, similarly to SD card and SSD transfer rates. It’s always consistently 25-40% of the actual advertised transfer rates. Gerald’s Xyla21 tests shows always 3-4 unusable noisy stops of dynamic range. No matter the camera brand 😂
Bad comparison with storage devices. Companies have no control over which filesystem is used, and the amount of space used varies with different filesystems. So they just report the actual specifications and leave it up to the consumer to be smart enough to understand that distinction.
my guess is they are talking about total dynamic range of the sensor, as measured by a 16-bit raw still photo. or not taking noise to signal ratio into account.
I am new to color grading...from from i need to start to become pro color grading and which editing software i can use? And photo graphy concepts like t lenses, composition...etc where can i learn ?
I dont care anout the bitrate or other numbers, but I do csre that the general image quiality seems to be worse than it was in action 4, detail is flattened and colors are washed out... Im on an OA 3 still, waiting to see if they fix those issues in future updates, till I upgrade, extended battery life and better low light is nice, but not if it's at the cost of the recording looking worse overall.
Use manual white balance and look where the light is coming from and it should be fine. It’s a small sensor, so these things become even more important. For contrast, adding midtone detail in Resolve locally can help.
I compared my dji action 5 pro to my GoPro hero 11, Action 5 looks like a 10 year old camera, it’s unacceptable, yeah if it’s bright outside it’s ok, but if it’s cloudy it is pretty muddy, Just returned mine today,

'useable' is subjective. total is the real deal.

Yes, most manufacturers do that.

what is the sense of such a "high" dynamic range when the bitrate is too poor ...
Yeah, that's true.
why don't you test the Action 4 too? the 4 could have same dynamic range but wasn't advirtsed
