- Tourists from all over the world flock to the Greek island of Santorini. But the island has become known for being overcrowded and, according to some, not worth the hype. DW reporter Sarah Hucal visited off-season to get a glimpse of what this Greek island is really like.

I love santorini! Visited 3times in a year. I know i did over the top. But its worth it. And now i am working hard to making money. I will definitely will go back ❤
As someone who has been to over 30 Greek islands, Santorini is incredibly overrated. Not worth the money relative to the other islands at all. There are more tourists there than actual Greek people.. If you want to go to a truly authentic and unexploited Greek island, try Karpathos. It’s my absolute favorite Greek island. It’s even more beautiful than Santorini imo. I was there recently in the off season, in April, and I literally did not meet another foreign tourist on the island the entire week I was there.
@@SoloTravelerOffTheBeatenPath I'm just coming back from Santorini and I agree. My first time there was 26 years ago and I think, it has lost a lot of it's charme. Especially this huge number of Japanese people was incredible. 😵🙈🙈 Hundreds of restaurants and jewelers and huge crowds of men. 😢
Planning a trip to Santorini in September, can’t wait!

@@SellsZac It should be perfect weather then, my crew decided on the Amalfi coast this year, so Santorini will be September’25 😀

First time ever heard anything about Santorini was the 1982 movie Summer Lovers I bet you that made it a lot more popular
I like it in October because it's way less crowdy. But there are equally beautiful islands in the Cyclades. I prefer Naxos, Milos, Andros, Folegandros and others more
Karpathos is the best Greek island of all imo.

Santorini is so beautiful 🤩; don’t let the Crowds deter you from going ; there’s Room for everybody 😀. I went @ the end of May & it was pretty busy but gorgeous!! If you’re NOT one to like super crowded Spots , will recommend going @ the end of October/November.

I went to Rhodes it was amazing
Perisaa Beach is the best beach there. If you want the best view of the sunset, take the Catamaran dimner/sunset trips they offer. Absolutely amazing!!
Oia is beautiful! 10 out of 10 .

Actually there is a Greek guide that makes videos for Santorini and in a video of his he has revealed 6 other spots other than Oia that you can enjoy the sunset the same or even better than OIA.

I can't wait to simply stay in my hotel in Oia...they serve bfast and dinner, + the pool. I won't need to leave at all

When did you went, I want to know about the weather
im a greek, the weather is still good in September and October, in November it starts to become cold . I went in early September and it was superrrr hot and crowded still. I guess the best time would be mid September to early-mid october

Overhyped - I’m here today, and went to these places and don’t get me wrong there are beautiful scenery’s but not that “exciting” tbh….it’s more for a chilled eat and bathe holiday than anything else…rather go next door to Turkey where you get it all from scenery to food to excursions etc
This makes it dreamy for me. I want to chill in Santorini, not explore. Turkey is deffo the best for the scenery and excursions

No would rather find tiny quiet places. Saw best in 80s andearly 90s unfortunately photos gone ... Skiathos Skopelos Cephalonia Spetses Hydra ...havent returned as believe would be overrun now..

I hope the sun set is alot better in person cos no picture or video impresses me. Im going santorini not because of the hype but because its less crowded compare to other islands. While other island have 3 flights per day. Santorini only 1 every 3 days where i live
If you’re trying to avoid the crowds, then you do NOT want to go to Santorini. Santorini is much more crowded than other islands. It’s not flights that cause crowding, it’s cruise ships. Cruise ships dock at the Santorini port, which dumps hundreds of tourists into the town centers making it difficult to casually walk through town. You can find videos online that showcase the chaos of Santorini.
I really suggest any other island (except for Mykonos) if you’re looking to visit a less crowded island. Naxos is a fan favorite.
Overcrowded, nothing to do on that rock I stay away from that like a pestilence

Ikr lol she didn’t say. But I’m here and the only bad thing is you need a car to get around. If you don’t rent a car it will be very hard to get around.

It’s awful. I’m here right now, today, and it’s way too busy, too built up, too many people and even the Greek waiters don’t like it. There are more beautiful islands.
