The Aston Martin DBS Is An Irrational Desire

  • “Whenever I see this car, no matter if it’s day or night, no matter from which angle I’m looking at it, I just fall in love,” says Michael von Trzebiatowski, the proud owner of this 1971 Aston Martin DBS.
The TV show The Persuaders is what ignited Michael’s love for the DBS, identifying with the car Roger Moore drove. His brother was drawn to the Ferrari Dino played by Tony Curtis, but when he was able to get one of his own, he got a house instead.
“I bought the Aston Martin, but no house,” says Michael. He really does identify with the car, saying, “It’s a bit portly, good-natured, and robust…Making a great entrance with big fenders on my car-that’s just not my style.”
Understatement is important to Michael, and it’s also OK that not everyone knows about his understated Aston Martin, or even notices it when on the road. Mind you, this isn’t some flash in the pan attraction to this car-it took Michael a decade to find the perfect example for him.
And when it was the right time to fulfill this irrational desire, well…let’s just say that Michael’s brother was kept in the dark for a while about the DBS!

If Michael isn't one of the most humble yet understatedly and humorously honest car owners, well, you got me. His singleminded passion is exceedingly enviable and his wonderfully honest admission of simplicity as to his wants and needs in life are warmly enviable. Passion both excludes and welcomes many of life's joys. I love his story, simple, witty, honest and bare bones until you realize what he gave up to achieve it, not a decision most folks would be willing to make and yet he seems utterly at peace and profoundly content without a shred of doubt or a second thought. If only life were that simple for the majority, then again, his story wouldn't be so memorable if that were the case. Well done Michael, well done...

I must say I am envious of this D.B.S. owner. This is THE car for me too. It has everything: majestic design, fantastic suave and masculine looks, super big engine and sound. It is romantic and reminds you of the past. I probably could not afford to own it, even if I could find one, but...... I remember seeing one parked on the sea-front in England more than 30 years ago. The colour was a warm peacock blue - my favourite!

The DBS V8 is a beautiful car, and that 5340cc quad cam engine still has one of the best sounding exhaust notes of all time. Although they had to originally fit the DB6 Vantage straight six, when they launched this car, as the V8 wasn't ready, it was still a nice enough car. But when they were finally able to put the new V8 into production, it transformed the DBS from a swift, fairly powerful GT, into a supercar. Still a big comfortable GT, but now able to devour miles effortlessly, with a soundtrack to die for. He's also a man after my own heart. Only a true car guy would by his dream drive, rather than buy a house. Good on him.

I well remember these cars. In many ways, they were a sort of British Mustang. They soon looked dated. They were expensive to run and rusted too, so it was soon possible to pick them up for pennies. In the late 1970's & '80's, no one wanted them, so many must have been scrapped. Yet, I always rather liked that 'British take on the Mustang' think about them, so it great to see them surviving and being cherished and treasured. This one looks perfect. Good for him I say....!

Here's why I like this channel: they always bring me something (a) I didn't know I was going to like, (b) something I already love, or (c) actually don't like, but it's being driven by a genuine enthusiast, and it's beautifully filmed, so I wind up being happy that the owner is out there living the dream. More than often, the subject is enjoyed regularly and the owner winds up being someone I would have a pint with. Well done. In this case, I think the DBS is the nicest Camaro every made, and it's hideous compared to the DB models before it, the DBS v12 that followed it, and the DB9 we have love today. But that's me. Either way, congrats Michael.

I'm 57 and live in SC, USA. I bought my first Aston.......a 1969 DBS in 1985 when I was 19 years old. I'm on my 8th Aston now and I'm quite happy with a wonderful wife and 2 boys. We have a modest, brick home but me nor my wife choose to have an extremely large home. We'd both rather have the Aston and our current tidy home. Our boys love every show we attend too. I pick up my 13 year old at least twice a week in the current Aston.. Very blessed and my Aston cost less than all new cars for the most part. 1998 DB7 i6 coupe in stunning condition. :) Peace to all and LOVE this fellas passion......just don't understand why his brother handled his money. I've managed all my affairs since turning 18. :)

Beautiful video and so good to see a real genuine car enthusiast who knows his stuff and isn't a poser. I too had one of these many years ago when they could be bought cheap. I had one in my late 20's and I certainly was not and am not, rich. I paid £2500 in 1985. Sold for 3x that in 1987. It was a handbuilt car and did actually have many reliability issues due to this. & very heavy to drive. Now the prices have skyrocketed. I don't regret selling mine but if I ever did get rich I would much prefer a classic like this than the new versions.

I love the Persuaders. I was hoping that it would come up, since the German synchronization is amazing and I find it really sad that it didn’t catch on that much anywhere else than in Germany. I love the way the series portrays the JetSet and chivalrous behavior even in modern times. Just the style of it in general really gets me in a way. It’s also the reason why I’m already on the lookout for a DBS even though it’s going to be a long time until I will be able to afford one as far as I know.

I wouldn’t prioritise it more than a house, but it is a beautiful car and I want one!

Just live in the car. Drive it from town to town solving mysteries.

1 of the 10 cars that I wish to drive, preferably to own, but just driving them would be a dream come true.
    The other 9:

    Porsche 356
    Ford OSI 20M TS
    Volvo P1800
    Mercedes Benz 300SL

Hi, I used to own this car when it was a burgundy colour and pretty much in concourse condition. Nice to see it is so well looked after and cherished. I replaced it with a DB6 which I preferred but thoroughly enjoyed its masculinity and kerbside appeal. Best regards, George Crowe

Hi George :) are you shure it used to be yours? If yes, do have any documents ore something colectable for the car?
Pictures or whatever. Sincerly Michael v.T.
