Nilsson as Sieglinde 1975 MET - Walküre acts 1+3 - Hunter, Vickers

Fantastic document, but unfortunately this Walküre is slightly abridged. Act II is missing. Nevertheless, here we have a wonderful Sieglinde (Birgit Nilsson) and an equally good Brünnhilde (Rita Hunter).

The role of Sieglinde is mostly in the middle voice with a few memorable phrases in the upper regions. Nilsson took this on when Rysanek fell ill, and while she herself was singing Brunnhilde in other performances of the complete Ring. She of course is solid, but it's not a role that showed off what she could do best. There is one startling performance of SIEGFRIED from this season - the broadcast - where the years fell away. She was 57. It was the gleaming, youthful voice of the Solti recording. Startling singing - I wonder if she regarded it - as I certainly did - as one of those blessed occasions when everything aligns? Pavarotti famously said, "The number of evenings when you feel in absolutely wonderful voice and everything is working is maybe 3 times a year. And usually those evening happen on a night when you don't have a performance!"

Hunter is solid as usual but Nilsson’s voice is bigger with a more heroic steel in the timbre.

I was at the performance. It was great. If I remember correctly Nilsson had an injured arm..
