You could argue that richer people are more likely to be depressed because they have probably accomplished everything they wanted. I suspect Ronnie was not being truthful but in his recent interview with Clare Balding, he said he wasn't depressed like everyone claimed.

Stephen's always been a class act, brought to light even more with his channel on here recently, top bloke. We've all had days at work where we've walked out or at least felt like it, sometimes when you have a lot on your plate you get overwhelmed and can't face things anymore. Mental health is no joke.

It's funny when I first saw this, I was completely unaware of how serious depression is. Not until I went through it myself, which im ashamed of because, I thought he was just being a drama queen. I've done things I would never have thought possibly because of depression. If you're reading this and you know full well what I'm talking about then please get help. It’s almost strange how bewildered they are. This was relatively recently, and if it happened now Ronnie’s mental health would be being discussed. Like, I feel certain they’d be saying I hope he’s doing okay and if he needs or wants help that he goes and talks to somebody suitably qualified. Instead they just look incredulous that anybody could stop playing during a game rather than think about why that may be.
I've done a similar thing in my profession as well. You think of something and decide in a second without thinking about it, that is the best way I can explain it. I don't think it has to do with depression but it has to do with being pissed off with yourself and those around you.
Ronnie has almost every record you can have... Can you imagine what his stats would be if there were no countless bouts of depression, missed tournaments, alcohol and drugs, etc. Staggering... Even though you can say his statistics are still staggering.
I forgot all about this. He's took up running for a few years now and it seems to have banished his demons I hope he wins this years World Championship to equal the legends Reardon and Davis. I must say the BBC were a bit pathetic wondering what had happened surely they know that Ronnie has anxiety problems. Hendry was brilliant though.

wow! People saying that ronnie quit because he was losing have obviously never suffered with anxiety. Hendry got knocked out the following round so he wasn't at his best in this tournament. It was fight or flight and Ronnies mental health at the time wouldn't let him fight!
As someone who still watches the snooker, as of now (UK championship), he's currently doing great and we still love him for what he's doing, but I also understand about his problems. I know how it feels to have your problems suddenly come on to you like that, it's absolutely horrible. Sometimes you can't explain them, but in a nutshell there's sometimes no reason why you can feel like you do, it's hard to explain, you lose interest in the things you love doing for starters, you may also feel like life isn't worth living, sometimes it isn't anyway!, you kind of feel evil and sick at the same time, obviously you don't feel right, it's just horrible. Evil might be the wrong word, but horrible is a good word to describe it amongst others, even better actually, you simply just start to breakdown, depending on the severity of the problems. Thankfully I haven't had a breakdown, but I've come close.
I've always wondered about the exact moment when Ronnie's mind went / in need of therapy. (It's not a laughing matter.) Thank you for this history docu. They'll meet again this Sunday on UA-cam, and I'm sure Stephen is still wondering.

He's right to suffer no more stress. Good to take control of the pain of frustration. Depression is such a cling on and to not let it cling no more was a good act of admission.
Ronnie is without doubt one of the most complex individuals in sport. You only have to look back on his career to realise that and he himself admits that there are times when he just doesn't feel it and just can't be bothered. There's no doubt he is one talented player but he himself admits he has had struggles with depression over the years and with snooker being such a mentally demanding sport if your head's all over the place and distracted by something like depression there's only so far natural talent (which Ronnie has in spades) will get you. I remember seeing this at the time and being really shocked in some ways but in other ways not overly shocked because it was Ronnie and Ronnie was known for doing bizzare things. Full credit to Stephen Hendry though because I imagine he was a little annoyed at Ronnie for walking out like that but he refused to criticise him publicly and he was a true gent about it. I've always admired Hendry.

Snooker is a classy game, one which requires not just ability (as you say Ronnie has in spades) but also composure and temperament. Having an ability to kerb any aggression and keep your cool at such a high level and intense pressure isn’t easy at the best of times. Ronnie is such a talented player but listening to him talk he clearly is struggling big time with everything off the table. I watched the Senior World Championship earlier this month and I thought exactly the same about the finalist, Alfie Burden. Plenty of talent but no class or respect whatsoever. Sad really.
actually the stats show that until 2005(which is well after Hendry was at his best) they were drawn for head to head matches, and that was the only time O'Sullivan went ahead in head to heads too,so until 2005 Hendry was winning head to heads, hardly occasional.
In retrospect we can be a lot more understanding of what at first seemed like a petulant and childish act, not to mention robbing the fans of a potentially great match! Ronnie's mental health battles have been well documented, and he seems at every tournament these days to be so respectful to fans and other players. He has become a great ambassador for the game

I think they both represent the two pathways to greatness in a sport! Hendry with his military like practice regime, total focus/dedication, ruthless attitude, personal sacrifice ( prioritising snooker above all else including family and friends, any kind of normal sociallife during his 20's) , profound ability to perform under pressures of any sort v Ronnie's natural gifted effortless ability coupled with lack of emotional control, impetuous behaviour, inconsistency, struggle to deal with pressure at times!! I think Hendry's path made him one of thee greatest dominant forces in sporting history!! He's in a tiny group of elite people like Tiger Woods and Steffi Graf who utterly dominated their respective sports for an entire decade becoming the greatest ever however this path is ultimately unsustainable, it comes at great personal cost which is why their careers lasted roughly a decade! I think it burns you out! Ronnie on the other hand has only spent relatively short periods of time in that competitive zone and has been able to rely on his God like ability to carry him at points. Yes he has went through lots personally but so has Hendry and many others. Ronnie has managed to step back whenever he needed to and avoid burning out. He matured more and more with every break he took as time went on and returned stronger every time!! They are the two greatest of all time and each hold records/ achievements that will surely never be equalled! Although I maintain that Ronnie's records are more likely to be beaten than Hendry's remaining ones! No other player will ever win 5 consecutive world titles or 5 consecutive Masters titles! No player will ever win 7 world titles in a 9 year period! No player will ever beat his run of 29 consecutive wins at the crucible or his 36 consecutive win streak in ranking events ( winning 5 consecutive ranking titles ) or beat his 8 consecutive years at world no.1!!!
Depression/anxiety just like cancer doesn't care how talented or wealthy you are, I can't pretend what's been going on through Ronnie's head but we deffo know that no matter he's easily the most gifted player we have ever seen and who would he e thought that he would be still playing in his 40s and winning tournaments, Stephen Hendry another great player was a class act here, two great players.

We've all had days at work where we've walked out or at least felt like it, sometimes when you have a lot on your plate you get overwhelmed and can't face things anymore. Mental health is no joke.
Also spare a thought for all the people who paid to watch.
Mate using mental health as an excuse because you just can't be bothered is lazy and pathetic.
Come on this is no big deal he brokedown emotionally , he didn't shout or screamed or attacked anyone , those tickets would probably been refunded and compensated . He is human afterall . Lol btw Hendry looked like he's thinking if he did something wrong that pissed Ronnie .

It's funny when I first saw this, I was completely unaware of how serious depression is. Not until I went through it myself, which im ashamed of because, I thought he was just being a drama queen. I've done things I would never have thought possibly because of depression. If you're reading this and you know full well what I'm talking about then please get help. Don't isolate yourself like I did and cut people off. You know what the worst part is though for all those that don't understand? It's pretending everything is okay when Infront of people or family. There's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of at all.

Ronnie just had enough, I understood this as I suffer with depression myself. He knew when to walk away. And Hendry was an absolute gentleman in his humble nobility and honesty. Two of the GOATS in this sport.

even though he's a professional, i kinda sympathize, i played a few matches of snooker and concluded that leaving was the best possible thing i could do. lol
this was one the lowest points in his career I have seen live on TV... I'm so glad for him and the sport that he found a way to handle it and return in such a marvelous way as he has done the last years!

It’s almost strange how bewildered they are. This was relatively recently, and if it happened now Ronnie’s mental health would be being discussed. Like, I feel certain they’d be saying I hope he’s doing okay and if he needs or wants help that he goes and talks to somebody suitably qualified. Instead they just look incredulous that anybody could stop playing during a game rather than think about why that may be.

I've done a similar thing in my profession as well. You think of something and decide in a second without thinking about it, that is the best way I can explain it. I don't think it has to do with depression but it has to do with being pissed off with yourself and those around you.
Ronnie has almost every record you can have... Can you imagine what his stats would be if there were no countless bouts of depression, missed tournaments, alcohol and drugs, etc. Staggering... Even though you can say his statistics are still staggering.

wow! People saying that ronnie quit because he was losing have obviously never suffered with anxiety. Hendry got knocked out the following round so he wasn't at his best in this tournament. It was fight or flight and Ronnies mental health at the time wouldn't let him fight!

As someone who still watches the snooker, as of now (UK championship), he's currently doing great and we still love him for what he's doing, but I also understand about his problems. I know how it feels to have your problems suddenly come on to you like that, it's absolutely horrible. Sometimes you can't explain them, but in a nutshell there's sometimes no reason why you can feel like you do, it's hard to explain, you lose interest in the things you love doing for starters, you may also feel like life isn't worth living, sometimes it isn't anyway!, you kind of feel evil and sick at the same time, obviously you don't feel right, it's just horrible. Evil might be the wrong word, but horrible is a good word to describe it amongst others, even better actually, you simply just start to breakdown, depending on the severity of the problems. Thankfully I haven't had a breakdown, but I've come close.
I love Stephen Hendry - have done since I was a kid. True gent and sportsman.

Stephen showed Ronnie the height of respect. He didn’t criticise Ronnie or berate him. A class act.
He's right to suffer no more stress. Good to take control of the pain of frustration. Depression is such a cling on and to not let it cling no more was a good act of admission.

Lots of respect for Hendry for what he said. He's probably always been Ronnie's biggest fan.
Ronnie is without doubt one of the most complex individuals in sport. You only have to look back on his career to realise that and he himself admits that there are times when he just doesn't feel it and just can't be bothered. There's no doubt he is one talented player but he himself admits he has had struggles with depression over the years and with snooker being such a mentally demanding sport if your head's all over the place and distracted by something like depression there's only so far natural talent (which Ronnie has in spades) will get you. I remember seeing this at the time and being really shocked in some ways but in other ways not overly shocked because it was Ronnie and Ronnie was known for doing bizzare things. Full credit to Stephen Hendry though because I imagine he was a little annoyed at Ronnie for walking out like that but he refused to criticise him publicly and he was a true gent about it. I've always admired Hendry.
Fair play to your comment here. . I too love Hendry. A class act for sure. Snooker is a classy game, one which requires not just ability (as you say Ronnie has in spades) but also composure and temperament. Having an ability to kerb any aggression and keep your cool at such a high level and intense pressure isn’t easy at the best of times. Ronnie is such a talented player but listening to him talk he clearly is struggling big time with everything off the table. I watched the Senior World Championship earlier this month and I thought exactly the same about the finalist, Alfie Burden. Plenty of talent but no class or respect whatsoever. Sad really.

actually the stats show that until 2005(which is well after Hendry was at his best) they were drawn for head to head matches, and that was the only time O'Sullivan went ahead in head to heads too,so until 2005 Hendry was winning head to heads, hardly occasional.

In retrospect we can be a lot more understanding of what at first seemed like a petulant and childish act, not to mention robbing the fans of a potentially great match! Ronnie's mental health battles have been well documented, and he seems at every tournament these days to be so respectful to fans and other players. He has become a great ambassador for the game
Thinking the world revolves around you, can’t be easy, poor old Ronnie, never done a days work in his life, the poor bloke,, everyday getting paid millions to do what you enjoy,, the poor, poor soul. It must be awful. When ever my three year old who’s having chemotherapy for cancer of the lymph glands gets down, I show her the miserable life Ronnie’s having and it cheers her up immediately.

Ronnie is bigger than the game and has been for some time. many players including hendry have conceded that very fact. he sells tickets and the other players dont. You only have to look at the way barry hearn redesigned the entire ranking system so that ronnie could play in tournaments when he dropped out of the top 16 a few years ago to take the year off. I'm afraid in the case of snooker, ronnie is. attendances to tournaments he isn't in have dropped massively, the bbc are no longer promoting the sport due to fact that he isn't guaranteed to turn up at events and the ratings dip by over fifty percent when he does'nt play. to top it all, rumours are that the powers that be are in talks to figure out how to deal with lack of exposure when he retires. if that is'nt bigger than the sport, i dont know what is! there is no justifiable reason why someone cant become bigger than their sport in the first place. it just has'nt happened before. yet again Ronnie is a first. Pure genius!!

I think they both represent the two pathways to greatness in a sport! Hendry with his military like practice regime, total focus/dedication, ruthless attitude, personal sacrifice ( prioritising snooker above all else including family and friends, any kind of normal sociallife during his 20's) , profound ability to perform under pressures of any sort v Ronnie's natural gifted effortless ability coupled with lack of emotional control, impetuous behaviour, inconsistency, struggle to deal with pressure at times!!
I think Hendry's path made him one of thee greatest dominant forces in sporting history!! He's in a tiny group of elite people like Tiger Woods and Steffi Graf who utterly dominated their respective sports for an entire decade becoming the greatest ever however this path is ultimately unsustainable, it comes at great personal cost which is why their careers lasted roughly a decade! I think it burns you out!
Ronnie on the other hand has only spent relatively short periods of time in that competitive zone and has been able to rely on his God like ability to carry him at points. Yes he has went through lots personally but so has Hendry and many others. Ronnie has managed to step back whenever he needed to and avoid burning out. He matured more and more with every break he took as time went on and returned stronger every time!! They are the two greatest of all time and each hold records/ achievements that will surely never be equalled! Although I maintain that Ronnie's records are more likely to be beaten than Hendry's remaining ones! No other player will ever win 5 consecutive world titles or 5 consecutive Masters titles! No player will ever win 7 world titles in a 9 year period! No player will ever beat his run of 29 consecutive wins at the crucible or his 36 consecutive win streak in ranking events ( winning 5 consecutive ranking titles ) or beat his 8 consecutive years at world no.1!!!

Depression/anxiety just like cancer doesn't care how talented or wealthy you are, I can't pretend what's been going on through Ronnie's head but we deffo know that no matter he's easily the most gifted player we have ever seen and who would he e thought that he would be still playing in his 40s and winning tournaments, Stephen Hendry another great player was a class act here, two great players.
