  • At Geneva Watch Days 2022, Wei speaks with two of our esteemed panelists from our Watches, The New Asset Class Horological Symposium to discuss the state of the watch market and how watches have seemingly outperformed every other traditional investment asset class in recent times. Silas Walton from A Collected Man and Eric Ku, founder of 10 Past Ten and Loupe This, may have started out as watch dealers, but their astute scholarship on pre-owned watches has earned them widespread respect as authorities on the secondary market. Hear what piques their interest in terms of collecting and where one can still find value away from the hype.

    Watches are not investments. Kudos to Eric and Silas for telling people to buy what you like. Also, never pay over retail for a used in-production watch.

      "investments" also go down. look at the tech stocks that lost 70% or more of their value in 2022. younger people who have never experienced tough market times seem to think investments only go one direction. things change.

      Easy for these guys to preach 'buy what you like' because most of the stuff they like are investment grade pieces. I think you would be naive to spend thousands of dollars on a watch without at least some thought of value retention. That's why Rolex is the top selling brand in the industry by billions of dollars year after year. It's blue chip stock. But it also depends on your budget. If you only spend a few hundred dollars then you are less likely to worry about parking your funds in an investment piece. Unless it's a MoonSwatch in which case you can double your money if you bought it at retail. Investment is a relative term. Someone who collects limited edition G-Shocks can derive as much satisfaction as someone who has a Patek collection.

      This is not new. The Italian investment banker & watch collector, Alfredo Paramico has been trading watches with a financially backed watch fund through an investment bank for 10 years. Essentially watch futures using pooled managed funds. The world has just awoken to the potential of such a phenomenon.

    All of my watches are investments. I know I would have spent the money on something for my house,car or anything that would have disappeared by now. Love your channel so much better than other channels that only talk about Rolex or A. P.

    Communication travels quickly now through social media. Hype is what drives the industry. Just take the MoonSwatch. A lot of people who aren't into the hobby have now jumped on board and the exclusivity due to limited supply has seen resale prices soar. Fear of missing out is driving the consumer demand. This is a plastic mass produced watch. This proves that a hype watch doesn't have to be expensive. Even kids are getting the MoonSwatch at retail because they can resell it for double the price. This is what is driving investment mindset at grass roots level.

    This whole watch as investment sucks so much! Too many wrong people in this now. I want to wear my watches not have them in the safe.

      London keeps appearing on social media and mass media as a place high in theft crime. Several London based YT watch channels & dealers have experienced theft. It's a terrible feeling that watch enthusiasts can't enjoy wearing their watches in public. This makes their watches safe queens and I suppose if you can't wear it, by default you have yourself an investment grade timepiece.

    I slightly disagree. You can still walk in and buy an IWC. You can still go compare it to a TAG. If you then get distracted by Cartier, you can take home a Santos same day. Supply is still very much there, it's just those hype watches you cannot get. I think that hype will come somewhat back to earth, with the very few exceptions

    • @oysterman962
      @oysterman962 Рік тому

      The manufacturers are just playing games with us. They are intentionally creating a superficial demand by under supply and loads of marketing hype. Watches are hard currency. Just think of each brand as a different country's currency and each holds a different value depending how many are 'printed'. We don't need these trinkets. It's greed and desire. Same as money.

    Cartier’s tank watch is effective because it suggests something interesting about fashion, that it is a timed thing, if that makes sense. Which is also why their whole range is very effective, all of their watches suggest the periodicity of fashion, the idea is that their watches are rich with memory, both in the sense of telling the time of fashion, and time being told as fashion over the years.

    Videos calling watches "investments," and where people who write about things are "legends," only serve to inflate "hype" and make enthusiast pieces *even more* unattainable. Not one of these "legends" thinks about the enthusiasts of an industry whose clicks and interest got them where they are...
