That weekend was rough. I was a 9 year old in Martinsville that weekend at my second ever race, and I vividly remember the fog on race morning as well as on Saturday morning. I was with my grandpa and he even mentioned how he thought teams might have a hard time getting in because they flew in. What hit me the most was when the news broke at the track that a HMS plane was missing, and seeing the solemn look on a lot of fans faces, I knew things were very bad for being such a young age. A few hours later on the way home, my grandpa and I stopped at a Wendy’s in West Virginia, where we ran into some other race fans who broke the news to us that the plane was found.
I can only speculate and imagine the wonderful things that he could have done for Hendrick Motorsports, and for NASCAR in general...... Rest In Peace Ricky and John Hendrick.... may God bless both of your souls
This Series feels even more complete with the addition of this video. I hope you are still resting well Ricky, we all miss you very much! Now I hope we can get a Gone Too Soon video on Dale Earnhardt and Neil Bonnett...
Great video Darian, no father(or parent in general) should ever have to burry their child. I’ve watched my father struggle after my brother died and it just shows how strong Rick hendrick was just to keep going. And winning with that scheme on Ricky’s birthday was just icing on the cake
I remember watching the race that day the plane crash happened when I was at a friend’s house, and then later that night learning about who all was on board. It was an incredibly sad day for sure. I’m glad to see Larson carry on Ricky’s legacy with his paint scheme and that he won on Ricky’s birthday.
I can only imagine what great things he could’ve done for Hendrick Motorsports. It was cool that Kyle Larson was able to get a win in his iconic paint scheme on Ricky’s birthday.
A lot of emotional moments, from Ricky Hendrick's first Truck Series Win to Jimmie Johnson's win at Atlanta. Just an idea, but what if Kyle Larson could run the Ricky Hendrick paint scheme, with the number 17 in the North Wilkesboro All-Star race. That would be awesome!!!
Kyle Busch has gone on the record as saying that Ricky was the go between between himself and Rick. Ricky got along with and understood Kyle better than anyone else there. Ricky would often smooth things over between Kyle and Rick. He thinks that had Ricky not passed so early that he could have likely spent more time at Hendrick. Can you imagine that? He was on the verge of winning a championship when he left. How many more might he have? Also where might Dale Jr. land after he left DEI? Could have completely changed the sport.
@@retroguyretail1976 They wouldn't get Jr but because Busch seem close with Ricky it more likely KFB will be a Hendrick driver for live and the current roster would more likely be Larson with the 5, Chase with 9, Byron 24, and Busch 25
Ricky Hendrick’s story is a bit of a What If…? situation. Yeah, Hendrick became a dynasty in the coming years but I wonder what would’ve happened in the Mid-2010s if Ricky lived.
I felt really bad for Rick Hendrick after he had lost his son Ricky and his brother John in that plane crash on October 24th 2004. I'll never forget that horrible day.
It was interesting listening to Kyle Busch talk about why he left Hendrick in 2007 to join JGR in 2008. He explained that Ricky Hendrick was the person in the team he got on with best, his go between between himself and Rick Hendrick himself. It turned out that Rick Hendrick wasn't really his guy and not at all the same generation and thought process. As such, after Ricky was killed in that plane crash, it had an unforeseen consequence of Rick Hendrick misreading/misunderstanding, whatever it was, Kyle Busch. The way Kyle Busch described it, it implied that after Ricky died, coupled with Kyle being a bit rough around the edges emotionally at first, made him feel unwanted at Hendrick. So when he left in 2007, he thought his career was over, but Joe Gibbs kept calling him, "Courting him," as Gibbs put it, and this feeling of being wanted and appreciated played a part in him joining Joe Gibbs from the following year, leading to the most successful part of his career (8 wins in 2008 alone and later the 2015 and 2019 Cup Series Championships)
The plane accident took place literally on my 4th birthday and my dad who is an airplane mechanic and I asked him what Jim Hunter said by the FAA losing contact means he said that it would mean it crashed and seeing that Atlanta race still gives me goosebumps because Ricky was in that car in spirit and that 5 car is his honor and miss what could’ve been with Jeff and Ricky running HMS
This is the role Jr. has with Hendrick now. Find the future stars and cut their teeth with him before moving up. I still contend Vickers wins much more than his four races and Busch wins title if Ricky lives. Mr. H didn't know how to connect with Vickers nor Kyle but Ricky did.
Makes you wonder what if? Probly one of the biggest what ifs in nascar history But seeing the 5 using his scheme is such an amazing tribute then larson winning on rickys birthday was so awesome
Who knows how dominant Hendrick Motorsports could've been had Ricky Hendrick escaped that plane crash? You take a look at the young drivers of today that Ricky could've scouted and developed... Zane Smith Kyle Larson (currently in Ricky's 5 car) Ryan Blaney Christopher Bell Erik Jones Ross Chastain Tyler Reddick Joey Logano John Hunter Nemechek ...the list goes on and on. Ricky still could've scouted out the current trio of Elliott, Bowman and Byron, but Hendrick would've had Larson ready to take over the 24 (later taking the wheel of the 5) after Gordon retired, Elliott would come next after Khane leaves (he'd take over the 5 first, then swap with Larson), then take your pick of Bowman, Byron, John Hunter, Chastain, Reddick for the 88 after Junior with anyone else out of that group to take over the 48 after Johnson retired. Imagine this driver lineup: 5 - Larson 9 - Elliott 24 - Byron/Bowman/JHN/Chastain/Reddick/Blaney (leaning toward Bowman) 48 - Again, take your pick of Byron/JHN/Chastain/Reddick
What if Ricky Hendrick didn't retire after suffering that shoulder injury at Las Vegas and what if he didn't die in that 2004 Hendrick Motorsports Plane crash.
