My father was killed by a drunk driver in 1999. The last time I saw him was when I gave him a hug on the front porch of the house and hoped in my pick up truck to see my girlfriend in Washington D.C. before I moved to Colorado. My mother called me a few months after I had moved and told me to sit down, she told me and I was devastated, 22 years later I still am. All of the things I wish I could have told him, how sorry I was for some of the things I had done when I was a teenager, I'll never have the chance to tell him. I'll never get the chance to tell him how glad I was he was my father and how happy he made me even though I might not have shown it. I was younger then and not all young people express themselves that well. I wish I could go back in time, I wish could tell him how much I love him but I can't. People who kill other when drinking and driving don't realize how many people they hurt. To them it's a fine and a little bit of jail time, then they are out and free. And we who have lost some will always be hurt, forever and ever. It's not fair! I love you dad and I miss you very much. With love, your son, Rhett.

I was court-ordered to watch this via a DVD at the Salt Lake County criminal justice building. I thought there would only be a few of us. 150 showed up, like me, court-ordered. It was a very emotional viewing for me. I compare society's changing attitudes toward drinking and driving to the changed attitudes toward smoking in public, car seats for babies, to name just a couple. I think it's a good thing. Heaven knows I could have seriously hurt or killed someone.
JFYI, this video was produced in SLC with SLC residents. I thought it was an excellent production.
The immaturity level of some of the comments screams selfishness. Unlike days gone by, there's no excuse to drink and drive today with the advent of Lyft & Uber. None. I was in jail for my own DUI and one of my cellies was a 35-year old that killed a baby boy in a car seat and turned his mom into a quadriplegic. Again, that could have been me.
I couldn't live with myself if I hurt somebody driving drunk, let alone kill somebody. I'm solving my problem by quitting drinking.

I just wanted to wish you well. It takes alot of guts to admit you got a DUI, but you seemed to have learned your lesson. I pray you did. The man who hit me & killed 4 people didn't learn, they found him outside of a bar in a ditch, he had been murdered. Hang in there, God bless

As a survivor of a drunk driving accident which left me disabled and in pain forever from a back injury caused by an adult male who actually thought it was funny and walked away without a scratch. I appreciate people like you who get it and speak out against it. Again I agree with you against some of the comments, especially that guy blaming mother's for it all are pathetic. God bless you and your family. I hope more people speak out against it like you and this may save lives.

This video made me cry. I was lucky but not lucky because I'm the mother of the drunk driver. My son totaled his car, but his friend in the car with him was hurt. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured enough to seek an ambulance. My son was arrested, he spent the night in jail, I had to pay the fees, a lawyer, buy a new vehicle, pay for his 1 year alcohol classes. He lived out of town going to college. He was 19. He's 39 now. He never drank after his accident. He learned what drinking and driving can happen. 😭😡🙏🏼

I am ashamed of the choices I have made. The mistakes I have made that could have cost lives and pain to others and to the people in my life. Thank you and Mahalo for posting this. When I lived in California I used to work in the DUI system, providing the drivers education for first and multiple offenders. Now I'm on the Big Island (Kona side) of Hawaii, and I continue my work by doing substance abuse assessments for people that get DUI's. It's my job to determine if someone is an alcoholic / addict (mandate them going to treatment) or if it was a bad judgment call. You don't have to be an alcoholic / addict to get a DUI. I tell my clients to PLEASE get a personal breathalyzer, to prevent getting a DUI or worse. They can be purchased online....or buy one for someone you love.

I remember when i was 18, me and a good buddy of mine went to Buffalo Wild wings for happy hour. We were just planning on a few beers and take some wings back home for the ball game.. Next thing you know theres that one drunk guy who randomly walks in and buys EVERYONE drinks.. Long story short, we are both FRIED, and we hop in my jeep, and mind you, my house was only 7 mins away.. I lost control of my jeep, ( none of us had seatbelts on), and when the jeep flipped, BOTH of us got ejected from the vehicle… The curve i lost control on had a Muddy and nasty swamp on the bottom of that hill, and when we got ejected, we landed n the SWAMP.. COMPLETELY UNINJURED.. Im like MIKEEEEE… MIKKKEEEE… And hes like im over here broooo.. and he had mud ALL over him.. Im like bro wtf just happened.. So we look at the top of the hill and the Jeep is engulfed in flames, and all we heard was sirens in the background… And yes we both did get hauled in that night for DUI covered in mud and grass..If you want to know how a mud pie tastes, im the one you wanna ask.. Alcohol aint nothing to play around with slim…. Yall youngins think im joking?? Your more than welcome to drink, get behind the wheel and find out for yourself

And, instead of going to check on the person YOU hit, if you have no injuries, you DON'T?! When her husband said, I was on the phone with her, and I heard that blood curdling scream, then the crash, and than silent....HE KNEW. What pissed me off is he thought he could lie, and get out of it. LISTEN UP DRUNK DRIVERS, DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO LIE....COPS ALWAYS INVESTIGATE. This pos took 2 lives. He killed a mother, wife, sister, daughter and a child. YES, I AGREE. If you CHOOSE TO DRINK AND GET BEHIND THE WHEEL, it should be premeditated. I was supposed to go to a local park with 3 of my friends that had just been at my house the day before but I couldn't go. I remember the reason was real silly. My dad was a fireman right downtown from our house and where the park was. My 3 friends were walking from the park on there way to my house. A drunk driver came a hit all 3 girls. They were pinned up against a cement wall it was a horrific sight. My dad had to literally shovel their remains off the road. He couldn't sleep for weeks because he knew them he had just seen them the day before. He didn't tell me for years. A drunk driver who didn't even care he had just killed 3 teenage girls between 11 and 13 years old.

A lot of MADD activists had to give victim impact statements, knowing they were also talking about themselves. They desperately want to pretend their own past DWI crimes are not their own fault, but the fault of a society that was permissive about young persons drinking alcohol. So they push for stricter laws against being younger than 21. The drunk driver could have called a taxicab, but what are Mr. and Mrs. Twenty supposed to do, build a time machine?

Wonder why all the videos for madd Canada are all comments disabled? I have a pretty good idea and you do too. Don't even try to ask them about their donation practices and where/who the money goes to. Bunch of neo prohibitionists. They should just rename themselves mad, mothers against drinking. That's their only agenda now. When the founding person quits because of all the above mentioned, it makes one think.

On 2 March 2006 a guy in Burton, Ohio was driving drunk (0.26% BAC), driving left of center, speeding and driving under suspension. MADD activists will be happy to learn, at least he wasn't drinking under age. He was 47. He crashed head-on into a car with three Hiram College students. Andrew Hopkins and Grace Chamberlain were 18, and they never got a chance to drink alcohol legally. MADD activists will be happy to learn, at least he wasn't buying for them. He had ELEVEN prior DWI's, Meanwhile, MADD pushed for tougher laws to punish anybody younger than 21 who drinks alcohol responsibly. MADD doesn't care about the carnage on the roads, they just hate everybody younger than 21.
