How Germany Changed Me...for the “worse” this time. As a follow up from my last video on how Germany has changed me, this one takes a look at how things may have impacted me in a sort of negative way. This could only be negatively impactful if I go outside of Germany and I speak mainly on it I visit my home country.

I hope it stays this way. 💝 It is frightening to me how much neo-nazi’s seem to be on the rise in Germany. When I was young in the 80’s and 90’s nobody dared to even make racist comments, but nowadays it’s a different story which makes me upset. I know, it’s always been there to some content but not like today. We have to make sure, racism does not spread, whether in Germany or anywhere. As long as the vast majority speaks out for equality, decency, kindness, ... - we should be alright.

You can as a bluck guy walk into a small gas station at night with only a 19 year old girl behind the cash register and you would be welcomed with a smile and nobody would think you would rob the gas station (as a german a gas station being robbed just happens in movies or the us).
There will always be bad places. Yes the events you told were sad but these are exceptions. In comparison to the US discrimination in germany is WAAAAAY less acceptable. Just hearing someone say "as a black guy....." sound very strange exept they talk about their skintone for makeup beacaue there are very few topics where skin colour is of interest.
The whole refugee crisis showed me how intolerant other parts of the world are. Refugees that told me they got discriminated by other refugees in their homeland because they were more black than the others and such shit. Almost every refugee after coming here was EXTREMELY hyped about germany and was so proud of being here and to work for this country that it felt strange because my family lives here for at least the 7 generation (thats how far I can find out) but the refugees have a WAY higher patriotism for germany than I.

I rather meant the overall reaction in society to such crimes: This seems to me has gotten more blatant, especially because of Social Media. And that by having those channel’s, racist groups are on the rise, and it seems to have become less of a taboo to speak racial. However, every kind of racism, especially the crimes you reminded of, need not to be forgotten. We need to be louder to protect or achieve the peace and freedom we want to live in.

I'm a Canadian that has been living in Europe for 9.5 years.. I moved to Germany from Spain 8 months ago.. And I have to agree with you.. Moving to Germany has definitely opened my eyes and changed me in many ways. I love this country.
Interesting, when I went to Canada I felt much more at home than in the US. Don't get me wrong, the US is exciting, but Canada was instantly familiar. I`ve always thought of Canada as "what would happen if the US were a European country?" I always thought that the mentality is much more similar.

As a German I must say that I am baffled. Such a positive comment is making me happy. Opinions about Germany were much worse in the past especially considering our history. Could it be we are doing at least something right ?

You can always ask for anything you lost in the store or cinema...they keep it there for a while before they transfer it to the Fundbüro. Normally a separate place or in the local police station. Where found items are waiting to get fetched by mommy and daddy.

As a European who has spent a lot of time in Germany and the Netherlands but who now lives in the USA, I agree completely. The level of ‘me first’ in the USA permeates so much of life. Europe is much more community centered. American selfishness vs European caring. I know which I prefer.

Yeah it always alienates me when even people who grew up here are refered to by the nationality of their parents
Traditionally, group hate in Europe has always been about either ethnicity against mainly other white European ethnic groups or about religion.
For example the old arch nemesis of Germans was the French.
So while we have some leftover shit in this regard, hatred based on skin colour is not prevalent because it doesn't make sense in any of our perspectives and world view.

Germany didn't "change him for the worse". It simply opened his eyes and ruined him for the USA (not that the bar was set that high).
Germany does have many positive attributes. As a Canadian, it "ruined me" too, but more when it comes to things like "quality over quantity". In Canada, I would ask myself "can I afford that?", now I ask myself "will I make use of that?".
For me as a German who has lived a half year in the US that is the thing I dont understand about Americans.. they are buying so much shit they dont need for no reason with money they dont own.... WHY the hell they acting so dumb when it comes to consuming?

Let's put aside that until 1990, Germany was an occupied country and therefore could only build up the kind of military its occupier allowed it to have (or wanted it to have). The reason why US military spending is so overblown has next to nothing to do with Europe, if anything, the US military is saving money, because it is allowed to use strategically important bases in Germany for free. You also have your damned nukes stored in Germany and have ignored request to remove those things.
Here are some of the reasons why US military spending is so high compared to Germany's:
1. NASA is part of US military spending. In Germany, everything related to space exploration is taken from the science budget, but in the US it is the military budget. You also run your own program, while Germany is in the ESA, hence sharing the cost with other country.
2. The US has nukes. Even if Germany wanted to (and we don't), we aren't even allowed to have them.
3. The US was involved in multiple wars (Vietnam, Korea, Irak aso), which had NOTHING to do with Germany, but created a high number of Veterans the US has to take care of. Germany has only a few Veterans (mot of which being the result of the War in Afghanistan during which Germany came to aid to the US, NOT the other way around). In any case, the high number of Veterans with medical needs naturally cost money, even though the US looooooves to save money there.
The only thing Germany needs is a defence force. And even that it will most likely never need because its soft power makes it unlikely for most countries to even think of attacking Germany. Honestly, the US gets way more out of this relationship than Germany does. When we act angry about Trump eroding Nato, it is less about us, it is about the small states which are located close to the Russian border and under constant threat of attack.

Every country in the NATO has to contribute a certain amount. Every spending over that required amount is purely voluntary.
The US is also acting against policies, since they have no right to interfere with other Nations economic decisions. It destabilised the relationship between Europe and the US even further and even though the US is a economically well off, they will suffer when they put tariffs on German goods. The US economy strives on imports. They import highe amounts of medicine and raw materials, because their country has low mineral amounts.
Frankly, I don't think the Russian pipeline was a good idea. We should rather work on getting our energy from renewable sources and reliable sources. The US wouldn't be a reliable source. I also think, we should kick the US army out of our country. If the US leader ever decided to be an absolute megalomaniac, we would be effed. I seriously don't trust the US to vote for a sane person and the government there is basically a step away from a dictatorship.

If you, as a woman, run at night in a bigger city in Germany you are definitely in potential danger nowadays. And due to the PKA (Polizeiliche Kriminalstatistik) of the BKA (Bundeskriminalamt) foreigners are 3-4 times more often involved in sex crimes including harassment, rape, etc. than Germans are.
@@johannes3153 I don't know if you folks just make it up or refer to interpretations by, let's say, biased groups, but according to the statistics I am currently looking at, the number of German suspects (5175 for 2019) exceeds those of non-German suspects (3014 in the same year) by far.

One thing is Germany has many, many folks with common sense and decency! I once was with my Girlfriend in the U-Bahn talking loudly and she covered my mouth. I told her that is rude, she told me in Germany talking loudly is considered rude. Oops! I felt bad. They like to respect others personal space. And you can walk around with anonymity and no one will bug you about anything.

@@johnlonergan929 I suppose he is refering to the notion, that with the influx of more and more people from different cultures, especially from the middle east, some of whom tend to stay among themselves, whilst occupying the public space without showing interest or respect for the rules and values the indigenous population live by, many perceive society to be loosing said common principles to live by.
The indigenous population themselves have been divided along the political spectrum, with the left making excuses for the foreign subcultures that have formed, calling for "tolerance", whilst the far-right is using the general unease about the unregulated immigration that has occured in the past years as a plattform to further push their anti democratic ideology into the mainstream.
Germany is still a perfectly nice and safe place to be, it is just that the discourse on political and societal issues has gotten a lot more aggressive, by German standards (of the previous few decades).
Still by far not as bad as Trumps USA for example.

Here in Europe (and even in Germany) you will see that too but I have the feeling that you see a lot less of it compared to how it was in the 1980s.

4:40 The reason you probably feel like nobody is trying to keep you sick in Germany is that healthinsurance is mandatory here and the more you are sick the more the insurance company has to pay. In the states, where mostly only private options exist, the economical benefit is a lot more of a prevalent thought.

I'm late to the party but I just wanted to say that it was being around American people on the internet which first made me even aware of the typical "American racism". All I'd known until then was mild suspicion from very old German people.
I see a black person in Germany, I just think how nice diversity is. And how pretty their skin looks. And I envy them a little because I literally burn in the sun. Last thing on my mind is being racist towards them.

Funny you mention this ... I felt this too when I was visiting the USA. Started at Chicago Airport ... I was new to USA but I felt something was different. After a week in San Francisco, I realized a strong feeling: as long as I carry 1 Dollar, I am worth something. But never run out of Money or nobody will even speak with you. I might be wrong because a local really helped me a lot - she was one of the people, you will never forget. Americans can be very generous and warm-hearted - if they remember.
As always, I found your video very flattering for us Germans and our country. I my oppinion, not everything is so great over here, too, i.e. we could still do better (meaning our Government). Yet, when I see Germany through your eyes, I always appreciate things more. Thank you for that!

There certainly are racists and Nazis in Germany, just like everywhere else. But I think they are becoming a vast minority. We certainly aren't as overly sensitive about it like many other countries though. As long as you don't behave in an inappropriate manner than most people won't care.

I personally think that the american "us VS. them" mentality regarding white & black people just comes from the % of population being waay higher than here. Black people are a small minority here and therefore it's just not an issue!
FYI- been living here in Switzerland since 1977 and feel EXACTLY the same way. Used to go back to the US every year. Now - feel as if I was there for the last time in 2019. No desire to go back any more. I'm good here.
BTW - southern Germany is a favorite travel goal of mine, visiting the "old cities", admiring the architecture, art, relics etc.

I never realised that not making everything a Sales Pitch is a difference. Customer Satisfaction is Key in Germany. If you visit a Store the Salesperson most likely will recommend the best solution for you even if they don't sell it them selves. The theory is if you are competent and give good recommendations a satisfied customer will come back and ask for your or your colleagues help. From electronics Store to convenient Stores at least where i live you are not a price tag but a customer with a problem that needs to be solved.

The U.S. forces people to drive who really shouldn't (and many of whom who really don't want to). In Germany public transit and cycling are often not only viable, but better options...
When I went to the states (Maryland) I noticed not even one bird singing. Not even on the countryside. And somehow the forests do not even really smell like forests. How?
This might come across as slightly arrogant, but having done basically the opposite thing, I have to agree on every point you made. It is my impression that so many people in the US just "do not care" on so many levels, like careless driving as if they were the only person on the road, and so many more things.

...and I might add - just as Trump is popular in the rust belt, especially by white supremists - our far east is suffering from the same problems of infrastructure, becomming the far east a sort of a "German rust belt" - the young ones leave in masses, no industries and safe jobs around, not a single DAX player located in the east, the population is old & older, tolerance never really existed in the last 80 years - so there you go.

You are mostly describing small town Germany. In Berlin, things are different. More violent more grimey more miserable but also more glorious ;)
Berlin is a failed state, sucking up money from whole Germany due to the Länderfinanzausgleich, being poverty-riddled, high unemployment, a joke of an educational system and arm wie eine Kirchenmaus. It attracts people with equal features..

For a long time I didn't even know racism exists. I always thought that colored skin is just like someone with brown hair and blond hair. I think germany does a good job telling that everybody is equal all in all.

I moved to Germany from the US back in 1999. The first two years were an adjustment but mostly positive things. I go back to the US to visit my parents every year. And, every year I can see the comparison of the two countries, cultures, habits, etc. And, every year I thank my lucky stars I live in Germany. No place is perfect but Germany runs on a foundation of respect, tolerance, human dignity. I actually dropped my US citizenship and became a German citizen back in 2015. So happy I discovered your videos because I was beginning to think I was the only one who experienced this transition. There is no way I could ever live in the US again!

Trains ar so much more relaxing than cars. You can walk araound and do stuff while driving. And you usually have more room for your legs. Trains are amazing! At least when they actually arrive on time.
To be honest, I just go to school by bike, because the bus is stuffed.

One time when I had a part time job I look my bike to ride there because A) There was no real convinience bus line there B) It was close enough for it and C) I dont want to be intependend on someone else when I have to go there and when to leave (I didnt own a car at the time and I had one task for the day that I had to finish and to fill my hours, It really didnt matter if I came a little late as long as I finished my task. Which I usually did, when nothing unexpected happened, like the material runs out.)
