consider you are applying the bending moment, if you see the top part of the cross section of the plane, beam expands along the axis and bottom part of the cross section beam contracts along the axis. so they resist the expansion in the top part and resists contraction in bottom part which will be along its axis which is perpendicular to the cross section (the plane).
I think types of loading aur ache se padhana chahiye.... I mean load ke bahut se type hote hain....like point load , impact load sudden load shock load....etc
