Originally, the crew planned to do an episode where Dipper and Mabel attended Twinstitute, a school for twins, but they couldn't crack it. Bottomless Pit was done instead to makeup for lost production time. At one point, series creator Alex Hirsch planned on having the characters talk in front of a black background for the entire episode. The original ending had the Bottomless Pit lead to an alternate Gravity Falls, where the remainder of the series would have taken place, but Alex couldn’t figure out how to make it work. While having the characters fall out of the pit is admittedly a cop out, Alex felt it was justified given the small-scale nature of the episode. There's a diagram of the bottomless pit in the journal(not shown in the show) after you finish the show you can see it. Essentially the pit discards some things and returns others, it is shaped like an 8 infinity thing with two exits.
This was a simple but also funny episode where both Stan, the Twins, and Soos discussing 4 different stories while they continue falling in the Bottomless Pit. In fact, up until the next forthcoming episode in Season 2, this was the first episode at the time that had an episode segment format (even though it was a full-length episode) considering that most animated series including those in the serialized format (e.g. Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Owl House, etc.) usually have full-length episodes while others such as Phineas & Ferb, Amphibia, among others have 2 segments in one episode. On top that, there were many jokes that went way over my head when I first watched "Bottomless Pitt", even the scene with the bear driving off had me laughing. 🤣
Apparently that scene was used to hire storyboard artists for the show. They'd give applicants the prompt "Stan teaches a bear to drive" and they'd have to board that sequence. Pretty sure that scene is based on one of the submissions they got.
Soos' title reminds me of the amazing titles of Gintama, which include: "Don't Complain About Your Job at Home, Do It Somewhere Else" So Let Me Complain. It's Already Been a Year Since This Anime, Which Began with, "Last of the Samurai. The Days When Our Country Was Called That Are Long Past." A Lot of Things Have Happened Since Then. So I Thought, It Might Be a Good Time to Look Back, but Then Someone Said, "Tsk, a Recap Episode. Isn't That Slacking?" Look It's Hard Work Putting Together an Anime, So Stop Complaining!" ... I'm not kidding, this is a legit title. 😂
If you think about it, this bottomless pit is kinda like a free sensory deprivation tank. Maybe you feel some movement, but you can basically just jump in and relax, I kinda want one.
Yeahhh but you'd maybe go a bit crazy depending on how long you're in there for. Did you guys watch The Daily Show when Jon Stewart was hosting? Kristen Schaal (Mabel) was one of the special correspondents, so she was on occasionally. And that's (probably partly) why Gravity Falls has some other TDS alums doing voices too. (Well, at the time GF was airing, they weren't alums, they were all still on the show.) Like, John Oliver as Wax Sherlock Holmes in ep 3. And there's another guest voice from TDS later, but we won't say any more about that for now...
In the official Gravity Falls Journal 3, it says that the Bottomless Pit is really an infinite wormhole loop, in the shape of the infinity sign, in which there are two holes. One on the top where they fell in and came out, and one at the bottom, which I don’t know where it goes.
I mean the fact everything was 'falling' at the same speed means that all the objects in the pit can't be falling or else each object would be moving faster relative to each other due to each of them having different masses therefore they have different terminal velocities. So if they not actually falling in the pit, then the next likely guess is strong wind or low gravity is keeping them in the same place like a ping pong ball being suspended in the air using a blow dryer for example. But if that was the case, then why do they exit out the bottom side instead of the top side. Also the fact that the time doesn't pass between them entering and exiting must mean it's a worm hole or something of the sorts. Interesting thought experiment though
all things fall at the same speed if you don't account for air resistance, if they are being kept up by air blowing on them, then they would not be at the same height, since things with more mass require more force to be kept up.
@@hamsturinn But there is going to be air resistance, you know, or else they'd suffocate. But I agree with the second point, so the second theory would be zero gravity is keep them at the same height floating, but the exit hole being underneath still kills theory 2 imo
