I have the original little bobcat 1 in my collection... I love it.. I watched Paul messners video on the new bobcat. I can understand why they have made these new ultralight tents. I love my bobcat because it is robust, tenacious , warm , highly waterproof and doesn't need seam sealing... I have taken that tent up mountains in storms , thick forest, soggy moors . It deals with the worst treatment... it cost me £47..... so no I won't be getting the new ultralight because it doesn't do any of that... Take care out there.

@@Rando-user-zm1fxI don't hike. I may spend a few days wandering round a mountain range . A few days max.. any more than that and I would see the need to be as light as possible.. I do have some lightweight tents if needed. I use a fjallraven abisco light 1 for winter and a lanshan 2 for summer... Though I use different tents for different camping requirements. I may one day by an ultra light tent , there are some very similar to the lanshan 2...

Can't think of any positives apart from the weight and outer pitch. For weather resistance and warmth, I'd pick the original over the weight saving every time. Put that on the Moor with a light inside and you'd light up like a see through blue beacon.

    Great video Dan.
Not for me, I know some folks pride themselves on how light their gear is but i’m not prepared to comprimise a bit of weight on a wafer thin tent especially with the weather we get here in the U.K (which is the only place you can buy them).
The colour is awful and and so is the price. I have a feeling these will be a big flop.

After watching Paul Messner's review of the UL Bobcat, and now your review of the Phoxx, I think OEX are aiming them at a very specific market.
Great in summer for the hardcore gram counters, but not really suitable for heavy use.
I think I have to agree with you, there are good, lightweight tents out there that would out perform these OEX offerings, and for a better price too.
(My CloudUp2 isn't much heavier and offers more space and stability, and the original Bobcat has always been a tank of a tent)
    Many thanks for sharing
    👍

Paul Messner will always give a biassed opinion. He is a Hilleberg fanboy and does not like to admit that any other tent can cope with extreme conditions. His review of OEX tents is childish. ALL these youtubers are biased to who ever supplies their freebies, all claim to do big distance hikes yet their physique indicates otherwise. Other gimmicks include exaggerated accents, fake supernatural experiences, and the worst of all selling their own brand of stove, claiming all the profits goes to charity then suddenly reviewing high end gear, when they previously only reviewed budget gear....

As mentioned in the FB group, the design isn't great. I see this as a downgrade to their brilliant previous models.
All they had to do was remake the phoxx 2 so that it was a outer and inner set up together so it was perfect in poor weather.

Enjoyed the honest in-depth review Dan, like the original Phoxx 1, no room for kit, can’t sit up in it, can’t really cook in it, which to me means it’s basically a hooped Bivi ! The price range is in the lanshan 2 pro range which is lighter and like a palace inside and all though bigger it’s probably more stealthy when it comes to the colour……. Not sure about this one. I 100% agree with you that they should of gone the Phoxx two route 👍

  • @billyinwaves
    @billyinwaves 7 місяців тому +3

Dan, thanks for this review, which is comprehensive, and down to earth as usual.
Most of us like OEX as a brand because they provide well-made gear at an affordable price, plus the tents always work, stay dry, and are durable.
The new lightweight range will maybe cater for an extra fanbase, where weight saving is more important - be that for hiking long distances in your waterproof walking boots, or for bike packing on off-road wheels.
In this case, the Phoxx 1 has always been basic, and just one size up from a Bivvy bag, and it's not a tent to spend much time inside. So this lightweight version is the same, but made lighter, and sold at a premium price for those that can afford that.
If you are hiking and camping in a more sociable way, then the Phoxx2 or Bobcat or Racoon - or even the Jackal II - give you way more head height and living space, and they are all way better for cold weather camping. Could they be lighter? Well maybe.
As ever, the purchase decision will be about what you can afford, and about how much you care about your backpack carrying weight.
If I was doing the South Downs Way or the Penine Way over three or five days, and on foot, then this Phoxx 1 in the lightweight version would, at just 850grams, be a very good choice. We're being offered the same decision as we already get when buying either a down sleeping bags, or the cheaper hollow fibre synthetic ones. The weight saving comes at a premium price.
I tend to buy the heavier stuff, but then I'm not hiking for 20 miles in one day. If walking 5 or 10 miles, I'd rather carry more weight, so as to have more space and comfort overnight. Plus I'd never spend £300 on a one-man tent.

The fact its possible to sit up in it and .still have a porch area is great .love the door vent (i really wish more tents had this simple feature ). Shame the colour isnt brown but as blue tents go that looks the best ive seen . And at £190 thats a hell of a specification for that money . Most tents built like this cost £400 plus.

I've bought the Bobcat ultralight and have yet to take it out. Although I know it isn't as robust as any of my other tents, as a 69 year old, 5ft 2ins female who doesn't drive and hauls everything on buses. trains and ferries, I'm grudgingly having to admit that I can't carry what I could ten years ago and I need to lighten my load.

Oex phoxx 1 V1 was my first backpacking tent and honestly this looks like an improvement. I mainly do long distance hikes so I quite like it. For the weight and the price it's actually not that bad and if I don't want to use trekking poles this would be a good option for a tent.
Most of all though it's nice to see a company trying something new. Also I wouldn't be surprised if in the future there will be updates to their cheaper tents that will carry over some design choices from these ultralight ones (outer pitch first and things like that).

It’s compact, robust, highly resistant to weather wind and abuse and I can pitch it with my eyes closed. A UL version on that design would have been amazing but this looks a faff to pitch and keep taught. Also I may be in the minority but I love how snug and bivvy-like my v2 is. £310 pounds retail £190 with membership card! no ground sheet and you have to seal the seams yourself! OEX! you can keep it! Heck even if it was under £40 pounds you could keep it, I would class that as a beach tent summer use only! so thinner Material cheaper pegs, charging Premium price for a cheap tent, I wouldn't spend my cash on this tent.
A good review and we understand how reasonable and Diplomatic you had to be as OEX sent you this product Dan, we know your extensive range of OEX products you have and know your true feelings on them, most have been more than positive, but i can't understand how OEX had the Gall to send this product for you to review.
Thankfully you are true to your viewers and value them, perhaps OEX might learn something from you, like respect and value your customers and not to try to rip them off just because of the name.

I like the blue color, and for the UL hikers that doesn't mind small spaces it might be pretty interesting I reckon. But, honestly it feels like OEX overdesigned this tent. They could've somply made a Phoxx 1/2 version with an outer first pitch, and then they could've done it in both UL and normal material. The inner first pitch is really the only downside to the Phoxx, the Phoxx 2 is already a pretty light tent in the "1-person-plus-big-rucksack" size range with its 2 kg.

I've found that nylon tents don't perform so well in very wet and windy conditions, typical of UK. Nylon is stronger weight for weight compared to polyester but it sags when wet, flaps, takes longer to dry out, and goes 'sticky' and balloons when trying to roll and pack. It's like the nylon inners on waterproof jackets, literally sticks to your arms when wet with rain or perspiration. Yes, nylon for summer. However for winter, polyester tents, like the Vango Banshees, stand their ground and perform well in wet and cold. Yes, heavier, but if you're a serious winter backpacker, the extra bit of weight is tolerable.
