Actually, making sure the fabric is 'on the bias' at the toe, will make it more cooperative as it will stretch and shrink much more easily without wrinkles because of the way the woven threads will be laying.
I use to cover shoes about fifteen years ago and around Mother's Day I would be swamped with orders. Back then I did not know much about what to use to put the fabric on. I used Fabri-Tac glue and it worked well. Glad to see this video and it gave me a new way to do it. Thanks for sharing and great job. Oh yeah, doing it the way I did them was messy too but the end result was worth it and same here. Just beautiful.
Stitching up a single layer ' belt carrier' like strip of fabric to glue over the 'seam' at the back will give a more 'professional' look to your finished product. Oh, I really have to try covering some shoes now. Can't wait to find the shoe/fabric to work with! Thanks so much for the inspiring video that makes it look easy enough for me give it a go, even with arthritis in my hands!
Brilliant! So nice to actually watch a video and see it all done step-by-step! You make it look so easy I think I'm going to give it a go. Thanks Judith!
You're right. It was a very long video, and worth every minute of it! Thank you so very much. I can't wait to get started on my own pair. Does it matter if the original shoe surface is smooth, cloth or leather/ suede? How well do the modifications hold up to extremely low temperatures, like below zero Fahrenheit? Thank you again. M
Gosh. I have no idea on low temperatures. I live in the Gold Coast Australia. Sub Tropical. The coldest we get is around 9 degrees for maybe a few days in winter. LOL
Wow! Thank you for the video, it was not boring, I watched to the end. Believe or not I saw A girl when I was going to the university in the sixties since then I been liking to do it. Thank You so very much. Hope I get to do it.
Wonderful tutorial! The recovered shoes are truly stunning! l have lots of fabric in my stash that would look great on some old shoes. Thank you sooooo much for sharing your technique.
Wow, thank you for that tutorial. I have a few pair that needs altering and that is exactly what I need to do for my pairs that are still good but the vinyl on one shoe is peeling on top.
Judith thanks a lot. The tutorial is so easy to understand. I believe I can do that without watching the video again, I mean, it's so clear. You're really a teacher. Please how can we determine the width and length of fabric before cutting.? Please let's know what to consider before cutting the fabric for the project. Thanks again.
Thank you Tonia. The width and length should be a little more than the width and length of the shoe. I would allow at least 10 cm (4 in) either side. It can be cut off later.
I covered my shoes for period dancing so that they matched the gown. I made a paper pattern first, then cut between sole and upper to half a centimetre in, so that the fabric could be glued between upper and sole. I also cut the fabric on the bias so that it would conform better. I only used glue for the sole part and the overlap to the inside of the shoe. The rest I sewed. They need to stand up to Playford Dancing, and they do. Not tried Mod Podge. May give it a go next time. The glue I used was Bostic 1
Using those big black paper clamps would help keep your fabric straight along the sides as you smooth out the toe. Great video. I have a lot of shoes in a bag set to go off to Goodwill that I think I will take another look at. Also, I sew for myself. It's great to be able to make matching or coordinating shoes to go with - using scraps! Thanks for making it so easy!
hi judith. I love your tutorial and step by step instructions. they turned out beautifully but I must ask if you put modge podge on the entire shoe after it was done. thanks for your inspirations.
+Laveta Bell Ji Laveta. I did not put any more Modge Podge on the shoe. You can of course, but I found that the fabric was stuck well and truly and I didn't think it needed any more.
I'm a new subscriber to your channel... not sure i would be able to do it ..but really enjoyed watching you transform your plain shoes into a pair of unique shoes... Many thanks...
Great tutorial! Thank you Here in the UK the word AWL is pronounced like the word ALL. I love hearing how other nationalities pronounce things. Thanks again for taking the time to do this video :)
It's my KIWI accent mingled with my Australian one. Left New Zealand when I was 17. Love Australia. I also love listening to other peoples accents. Cheers Judith
I must admit I was confused at first until you picked up the Awl (all) cos I expected a different tool. Great job on those shoes. Great idea to lengthen the life of comfy shoes, mine are the most comfy when hey are falling apart so to get more use out of them is great!
dear Judith.... its remarkable and glad to see yr tube on yr creativity. i love this kind of work... i just wonder can i order that specific glue from u...i really hope to hear from u...how much it cost for per glue... keep it up..tq again can the same material be used to make clothes..just wonder..
Yes you can purchase the Mod Podge from my website at the shop. the details are in the video. I love using my machine to sew. I have never considered using glue to make clothes. I am not sure how that would go. Very messy I would imagine.
great tutorial! I've wanted to do this for years but never quite thought through the details on how to do it. Thanks. Any tips on choosing the fabric to cover your shoes?
Loved this video! I appreciate you taking the time to go thru the steps. Many videos don't even talk and it goes so quick one cannot be sure if they are doing it correctly. Thank you!
I didn’t read all of the comments. So you may have answered this. Have you had trouble with glue unstick in after accidental moisture . . . walking through wet grass?I know you could reglue. Still, I wondered about protecting covered shoes from ungluing. I have 2 pairs I want to cover. Can’t wait. Thanks.
Using an exacta knife at the end. Use lightly as they are also and mainly used as box cutters.by cutting sideways instead of straight on she is able to tuck at the same time but you must be experienced with the correct pressure so as not to cut the shoe.
great tutorial , i never dare doing it, now i think that i will be able to do so, would you be kind enough to let me know the name of that thin tool that you use finishing the shoe with please? thank you x
hi Judith , thank you for answering... i bought one already, they are really great for my arts and crafts....as English s my 1st language, sometimes i don't know the names of certain things, to look for them online...so once again... thank you very much ...and carry on teaching those wonderful techniques to us....regards

I really appreciate the detailed explanations you've given in this video. Great job and thank you for teaching this. One question: Can I use any kind of Mod Podge or does it have to be the one for fabric?
+Jacqui G Hi Jacqui. Still working out how to use UA-cam comments. Here is the info you asked for. The Mod Podge I used is Fabric-Tissu-Tela. It is available at my website geniecentre.com at my shop under Haberdashery Aids, Glues and Dyes.
It is a standard tailors awl. It does not have a sizing on the packet. It is about 12.5 cm (5in) long. Sharp point. The stanley knife is from my garage and is probably about 30 years old.

I covered my shoes with fabric from my homemade prom dress in 1969! Terrific video!

Perfect ... clean...professional-looking! That's what was looking for!
Thank You for your expertise!!!
Very clever, very interesting. This video has opened up a new world to me and I am thankful.

wonderful tutorial. question is the shoe leather or fake leather. what is the best fabric to cover with? Thanks for sharing
They were fake leather. Fabric Mod Podge works on either.
Brilliant video very in depth which is what I love keep them coming love from the uk xx
You can also buy mod podge at Walmart and Michael's
There is no Walmart or Michaels in Australia...
Hi Kim, If you are in Australia, you can purchase it from my website www.geniecentre.com I live in Gold Coast Australia. Judith

Mod Podge is waterproof.

Amazing job. How do you know how much fabric to cut?
You will notice in the video that I cut enough to cover the shoe and a little bit more. Depends on the shoe size.
The Mod Podge I used is Fabric-Tissu-Tela. It is available at my website geniecentre.com at my shop under Haberdashery Aids, Glues and Dyes.
+Judith Turner hi judith, great tutorial! is there no way to buy mad podge over your website for german customers? :(

your video was a big help
Can I use any other glue with
I am not sure what you are using it for. This glue is for fabric.
Very nice job thanks for the DIY FYI
Judith Turner you are a genius.
oh wawooo, God bless you abundantly for sharing your knowledge with everyone.
very nice look's great thanks for sharing
Mod Podge glue is the same as Elmers if i'm correct.. So if you were to get them wet (rain).. you're fabric would come right off... Not that i'm trying to be critical because I think it's a terrific idea and you do a beautiful job.. but would there be a glue that would work as well that would not come off if gotten wet?
I don't wear my covered shoes in the rain or get them wet. So I can't answer that question as to whether they are ruined by getting wet.
I just read the jar it comes in. It is machine washable after 72 hours. So I do not think the fabric would come off with a little rain.
Ok.. I just read: Mod Podge is glue, but it's also a sealer - and there are varnishes, etc. in the formula that don't exist in craft glues:... I use craft glue (elmers mainly) to cover boxes with fabric and it's removed easily with just a wet cloth after drying on my work surface. Since I now understand the difference, I plan to purchase ModPodge and try my hand at covering shoes. Thanks for the reply and you do a beautiful job.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I HAVE A PAIR THAT I THINK I'LL BE TRYING THIS OUT. LOVE THIS SHARE.
beautiful job. thanks for sharing
It is available at my website geniecentre.com at my shop under Haberdashery Aids, Glues and Dyes.
what type of awl are you using?
It is a standard tailors awl. It does not have a sizing on the packet. It is about 12.5 cm (5in) long. Sharp point. The stanley knife is from my garage and is probably about 30 years old.
thank you very much for the tutorials. best so far. very detailed
Great video thanks for the helpful tips
Good Job 👍👍💟 You Took Your Time and Did it Correctly! Now You Have a Nice New Pair of Shoes ☺Thank You For Sharing.
Thank you for sharing. Great video and will be trying soon!😊
Excellent tutorial.Thanks Alangar footwear.
This is the first time I have seen anything like this being done. Excellent! Thank you for sharing. I did not think it was possible. Glad glad this is the first tutorial I saw. Very good and detailed tutorial, you not only show how to do it the first time, you repeated it with the other shoe in case someone missed it the first time.. A pair of old shoes got a new life, a second chance. Unbelievable! I have one question. if you wore these shoes out and it rained, would it still hold together?
Getting them wet is not an issue Alicia. It is water proof.
So pretty nd so sheek! Thank you for your time. Love it!
Great tutorial. Refreshing to hear a voice that doesn't grate your ears to listen too.... argghh some of those American women, I have to mute them. I do think some bits could be sped up tho... thank you for sharing, loved it :D
I want to cover the tips of my faux leather sneakers with leather. Will this method work? Thank you!
I am not sure if it would work on leather YaYa. I have never tried that. Perhaps you could trial using the Mod Podge on leather and attaching to something else first.
YaYa If using real leather contact rubber cement is awesome. It bonds leather perfectly. If using a faux leather my recommendation would be E6000
Thank you for sharing that with us Sanitta. Awesome
Absolutely FABULOUS!! Thank you so much for this & especially for showing the up-close details! Ordinarily I hate long videos; however, this was worth every minute! Now, some questions: What type of fabric works best? What happens if they get wet? Will the glue hold even if the shoes are worn for many hours? Thanks again
I find that cotton works best. I used 100% quilting cotton on the animal print. But the other ones were just a fabric I had in my stash. I think it was part polyester. But it worked fine as well. Mod Podge is machine washable after 72 hours. So getting wet is not an issue. Like any shoes they will become worn over time. cheers
Thanks
bellissimo complimenti volevo chiedere che colla a usato in italiano grazie
That was fun thanks im going to find some shoes to try this.
Very nice I love it😊
Thank you for sharing. Wanted to buy a leopard pair. I think I would go in for covering an old pair.

Any suggestions for a short high heel boot?
I have never covered a boot. Not sure how you would go about that. Sorry
+Judith Turner thanks, I love your video!

..... Have you ever done one with tissue just to make a pattern? Also, have you ever done one with heavy duty muslin?, or painted a pair with fabric paint?
Hi Nancy
I haven't done any of what you ask. I am always so busy with clothes alterations, website, videos, ebooks etc., that I seem to run out of time every day. But you sound like you would give it a go.
Well worth time for the details and tips. New subbie on board
Really thrilled that you have become a subbie. Awesome..
