Thank you for this detailed and accurate explanation of Abel Tasman's discovery but he had nothing to do with the name Zeeland for Staten Land. The cartographer of the Dutch-East India Company, who had employed Abel Tasman to map out the Pacific, chose to call the island N. Zeeland as a tribute to his recently deceased mother, who came from that Dutch island. I wish New Zealand would be changed to Aoteoroa. Like New Hebrides being changed back to Vanuatu
How about it being called Nova Zeelandia ? after a small Dutch island. Change to Te ika -a - maui ( The fish of Maui ) may be appropriate since he was the one to drag it out of the ocean.
