7:30 I don't think the actuation point on the graph is correct. The graph suggests the force required increases gradually, then increases suddenly to the point of activation, before dropping off again. Surely the required force would increase - let's say linearly - up to the point of activation, then drop suddenly as shown. (I'm ignoring the increase in force up until it bottoms out).
@Linus: Did you try out key combinations like WASD + arrow keys? Some 3 key combinations don't work - there is a ghosting problem. It only detects 2 keys pressed at the same time for W + D + right arrow, for example. Dell Alienware support isn't being super helpful in this regard. Not sure if I received a defective piece or if it is a design flaw with all laptops.
Linus' rating of the M15 R2's keyboard was why I went ahead and made it my 4th Alienware laptop. It's been a crazy good laptop keyboard. I was interested in seeing if the MX switches were any better.
Dear Linus. "This is not really a laptop, it doesn't go on your lap." Neither should any laptop, you're not supposed to put them on your lap, because the fans can't breathe then.
LTT did a video of their staff blind testing different switches. Cherry mx brown won the tactile category, beating true tactile switches like holy pandas

9:11 When Linus puts his head near to the m17r4, you can hear the screeching noise by the fan pretty clear. That's right my friend, an over $3000 laptop with a fundamentally flawed fan design that makes a screeching noise as soon as the fan turns on. Good job Alienware. I got a mechanical keyboard, hoping that it responds more reliable. The cherry MX brown are reacting to each keypress, no failure, so that aspect works excellent. And I learned to appreciate the tactile feedback, which eliminates the need to hammer the key down to the bottom. It's much more gentle on the fingers than a cheap rubberdome keyboard.
Nope. That thing is low profile switch, which currently popular in use for low profile dedicated keyboards (that switch is still tad bit too tall for use in typical laptop scenario) This one is ultra low profile switch. Just about as tall as typical butterfly switch.
I feel like they could make a decent mechanical laptop keyboard if it it was just a sliver thicker, based on my experience with the logitech G915, there are decent low profile switches and caps.
One type of gamer that isn't very common but does exist - uses the laptop as a CPU and uses all the peripherals of a desktop - monitor, keyboard/mouse, speakers, etc. They need this as they require the additional mobility that a laptop offers - for work, game nights etc.

I’ve got this exact setup with the 150hz screen and normal keyboard. It’s a portable desktop replacement that does gaming duty since I travel for work constantly. When at home it’s hooked up to a 34” Alienware ultra wide and Corsair mech keyboard, so no need for the better screen and keyboard. My last 2 computers were gaming-compatible laptops. I used them about 50/50 for work/school and gaming and I was more than happy with their performance on both. One thing that I never had an issue with was power. Not once did I find myself somewhere I needed/wanted to use my laptop that had no accessible power outlets. Maybe it's just me but I love the keyboard on my Lenovo Y545 (front-load like the Alienware) You don't have to press the key down a bit before it has any effect, the instant it moves, the action happens (moving, jumping, etc.). I mean, you can always carry a wireless mechanical keyboard for a desktop in your backpack and just whip it out and mash keys anytime XD Sure, people will look at you strangely because you have no computer or screen, but that's a minor detail given that you came here to TAKATATAKA
My old predator helios has membrane keys, and the W key already started to be inconsistent after a year. It works, but I have to press it down firmly and deliberately. Keep in mind that it does bottom out. If I press it too lightly, it bottoms out but doesn't actuate.
Gaming laptops like this are going to be CPU limited in almost everything while using the built in display. However, if you use the built in display out on the laptop, you can connect an external display directly to the graphics card. That means you get desktop class performance but the ability to disconnect the laptop and take it with you. Is that worth the extra cost in respect to both the price and reduction in CPU single core performance to get the laptop, maybe.
@@zachb1706 That does not always work and even if it does, is not worth the extra power consumption. I have a hard time understanding the point of a gaming laptop.

I got a mechanical keyboard, hoping that it responds more reliable.

Imagine going to a lecture with 300+ students and typing your notes on a mechanical keyboard
So around last November, I was planning on buying a ps5 but was convinced by a PC gaming friend to invest into a pc but me being on a budget and knowing only that PCs can get expensive, I went to Best Buy and asked an associate for anything open box and he pulls out a Alienware m15 r2 with an RTX 2060 for $854.99 but the build price was $1899.99... it still had the plastic and everything still on it and no scratches and was labeled as good condition.. I bought it and as someone who was usually on console before, I love pc gaming...

Don't be an idiot, schools are incapable of buying mechanical keyboards.
Paid about $2500 for it with some recent sales and it’s one of the few things I’ve purchased in the last decade that I don’t have any regrets about.
It just isn't an issue that I experienced over the last 6 years, so I don't think the "tethered to a wall" argument against gaming laptops is valid.

Maybe it's just me but I love the keyboard on my Lenovo Y545 (front-load like the Alienware) You don't have to press the key down a bit before it has any effect, the instant it moves, the action happens (moving, jumping, etc.). I like the certainty of knowing at the exact instant that it will actuate instead of pressing down a bit before it goes

Or you can disable Optimus in the bios
@@zachb1706 That does not always work and even if it does, is not worth the extra power consumption. I have a hard time understanding the point of a gaming laptop.
