DIY Painting New Drywall with Airless Sprayer - Graco Magnum X7 - DIY Painting New Construction

- DIY Painting New Construction: Dad and I primed and painted all the new drywall in the house. We used the Graco Magnum X7 Airless Paint Sprayer with a 515 tip. Since it was new sheetrock, there was a lot of prep work involved. I dusted all the walls and ceilings with a broom. Then I vacuumed the floors to get rid of drywall dust so it didn’t kick back up into the new paint. I masked all the doors, windows, and exposed beams. Then we primed the walls and ceilings with Kilz Drywall Primer, which seals the new uncoated drywall. Then Dad painted the ceilings with Valspar Ultra Ceiling Paint. After the ceilings were dry, I masked them at the edges so we could paint the walls. Next, we painted the finish coat on the walls with Valspar Ultra - Eggshell, in the color Gravity.
We are not professional painters or experts, but we managed to get good results from this project. We painted before the floors were installed or the trim work finished, so we will probably have to do a lot of touch-ups after all the finish work is done.

What a treat to work with your dad. I would have loved that opportunity, enjoy him while you can. Great job!👍🏻
Bucket of paint - $60
Graco Paint Sprayer - $350
A father's love for his daughter - PRICELESS! :-)
Geez...the sprayer jumped up over $100.
I’ve got the Graco MXII 695
I never let go of my trigger on ceilings ever. Just close your eyes and believe.
lol😂
Has to be an awesome feeling and day to do this with your father that's something to cherish for a lifetime thanks for sharing
Love to see an experience working, that's the best school for you and is the best heritage from you father, I bet everytime you see that house you will think about ur dad
God Bless the old man for his love of his daughter to help to that extent moving around like he was still 40. as a painter i do not recommend the constant changing between horizontal swipes and vertical ones. its best to be more consistent with even swipes in 1 direction (either horizontal or vertical) with exception for some odd areas but all in all consider yourself lucky to have such a loving caring father and him to have such a great relationship with his daughter... God Bless you both
Thank God for us dear Ole dad's. Your dad really got down through there!
Great video! Can’t beat working with the the old man! “Dad” ! Keep up the good work!
Great to see how this pump is working. But next time you use it walk from corner to corner while you're spraying to give an even layer of paint - by standing in one place you create a lot of overlaps ... emulsion is very forgiving when you do it like that but it still looks much nicer when you do it in one even flow. Great to see you guys working together.
I think it's excellent when a daughter and father can work together as a team you guys are very sweet and nice keep up that good work
I just bought a graco x5 last weekend for my basement I been finishing. Excited to be done with mud and move onto paint!!It seems beginner friendly using the graco, thanks for sharing!!
I'm right behind ya. Mud was finished last weekend, gearing up for paint soon.
@@pete_ghost good luck on everything. I been saving a ton of money because of the internet and it’s looking great too
😂 I’m following your footsteps as well! Going to buy a sprayer to make painting the basement easier. Looks like it will be money well spent!
Ok so when I painted apartment units we would spray ceilings then straight to walls with about 1/4 fan overspray on ceiling then instead of masking the ceiling we would mask the wall with 12 in paper and do a quick perimeter touch up, it's super helpful if you have popcorn ceilings or really high ceilings making walks way easier great video
I agree with vacuuming floor but sweeping walls with a broom? Id take a dry brush and just dust out corners.
He is a natural at teaching.
I appreciate this video...been researching graco paint sprayer... this added information I am gathering to buy the unit... I am researching to paint my exterior of my home using the graco unit... watching you and your dad in real life painting scenario is what I'm looking for... the details as not in the brochure... great job guys👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I am glad you found it helpful. We are going to use this sprayer to paint the exterior of the house too. That is mainly why we bought it. But since we had it, we decided to try it inside.
You did a lot of prep ♥️👍🏽🥰
I cant even handle how amazing your accents are!
🤣🤣🤣Thank you
Great job, gang!
Great Team Work!
Great job!!
As a professional painter I use PVA Primer on new Drywall.
How many coats of primer if you are spraying?
@@jeffherring6279 I usually spray 2 coats of Primer on new Drywall
IF someone were wanting to prime everything, ceiling, walls and trim. Would you just tape off the floor and fixtures and just do it all at once with the same tip?
@@heatherb918 you can do that. I usually remove the light features, curtains, blinds etc.
You don’t need to prime new drywall.. whatever flat white you use on the ceiling just give the drywall one coat of that and you’ll be fine..
2 coats of a pva primer lol..
2:01 cutest noise ever.
Your Dad goes....he knows and is an expert ;)
Team work make the dream work 👍💪🏽
Good job y’all. Work looks 🔥🔥
Just one thing.never put your hand over the tip when assembling the gun.turn the machine off or dis connect the gun from the hose.could have very serious consequences it ends up spraying onto skin.its a very high psi so it will pierce the skin and get into your blood stream and can cause death
Wow this is an awesome video! Thank you!
Great video ! Thank you .
great job you guys. your dad is a mighty man ;0)
you both make it look so easy. nice work!
Hey yooo!! Great job
Ok I'm a professional painter and one thing you don't want to do is put a wrench on your tip guard like you did. Just hand tighten it and that is all or you run the risk of damaging the seal in them and trust me you don't want to damage that seal. Otherwise a great video love seeing people masking things like they should. You would be surprised at how much of my business is because the home owner calls me after trying to use a sprayer and realizing they messed up. Good job doing it like you did.
Very nice sir
You get a MUCH better job and better coverage by spray and back rolling.
Also when spraying up and down turn your tip round.you ll get a much more even spray
Nice
Always strain your paint prior to using any sprayer! Prevents problems and clogs!!
Yes! Very true!
Nice teamwork. Any reason why you got x7 instead of x5? Did the paint in the bucket spill when moving x7?
Guess I’m old school because I still believe in rolling my walls.
Hey, Thanks for posting this. My wife and I are getting ready to paint our walls. Question - I noticed that your outlets and can lights were not covered, did the paint damage any of the electrical cables?
Simplesmente Fantástico 🇧🇷
Does anyone know where I could source the head gear their wearing looks a great job
Nice job your machine model and number I have purchased one machine . You need selling protected equipment attach with gun nozzle very good result nice job and nice your eie
Anyone who now a days buys a midrange sprayer is a painter.
On new sheet rock what Is first? The texture or primer?
Thanks for the video of the X7. I am trying to decide between the X7 and the 190PC model. Can you tell me how many coats you did on the walls and ceiling after priming and have you used the sprayer since? Did it work well after it was stored?
We did one coat of primer and one finish coat. We have not used that sprayer since. But we will use it again to paint the exterior in a few months. It comes with a solution that you are supposed to put in it when you store it. So that should help it store well.
Had an x7 painted 35 apartment units, pick up line always had paint or water in it that was about 6 months, had it for about 6 months after that painted a few exteriors then Somone stole it. These are really good small units
Also the x7 I had purchased was previously owned not sure how much is it had
What about the window sils
Great video! I purchased the same primer but havnt started yet. Waiting on the x7 to arrive. How is your paint sprayer and primer etc holding up? Any new updates?
The paint and primer are holding up good. We painted before we did the floors or any of the trim, so we have banged the walls up some while doing that. We will definitely have to do some touch ups before we move in, but I think that is normal. Otherwise it still looks good!
@@CountryGirlLiving how did you handle the corners? I just got mine and it leaked so much from the handle area, cleaned it up and finally work but the prime I used kilzone 2 was runny, not sure if it was the primer paint type but definitely disappointing, gonna try it again
@@Ricebow11 On the corners we sprayed floor to ceiling to get a good coat on corners, then stayed the surrounding areas. If it was leaking from the handle, you probably didn't have it tight enough. Used wrenches to tighten it down. I haven't ever tried kilz 2. But the kilz drywall wasn't thick or runny, kind of in between
your dad's good
Why not backroll?
I don’t know what I did wrong I purchased a new one and it was shooting like dots now fanned out
Great job looks good
is’t airless sprayer take more paint then roller
I am not sure if the sprayer uses more paint or the roller....
Sprayer uses more paint, yes
Is that Lee Corso? Your pop is doing it
You spray up and down on walls one pass then overlap 50%
That extension is for the spray roller so it don't bend when your rolling, I would never spray ceilings or anything with that, your arms would be jacked all day, the extensions for an airless sprayer is a quarter inch thick, 5 times lighter that thing, he got that and that sprayer at home depot, next time get a titan sprayer, those x5 and x7 are garbage, you only get about 100 to 200 gallons out of them and the pumps are done then they are garbage.
Why did you sand after primer? Been considering getting a paint sprayer, is cost worth time saved?
We sanded after the primer because there was still a little but of roughness to the drywall. Just a light sand of the primer took care of it and made the walls smooth. Is the cost worth the time saved?....Well, for us it was because we used if the the entire interior of the house, and will use it for the exterior of the house as well (this is where it really saves time). It worked well for inside because it was new construction and we didn't have to worry about it getting on the floors or on furniture. If you are painting interior on an existing house, I would probably just roll it. I think by the time you had to move all the furniture and mask all the windows, doors and walls, it would be faster to just cut and roll.
I liked your video. You do not mention tip changes. Other videos make comments on this.
We didn't change the tip. We just used the one that came with it.
@@CountryGirlLivingbut still you can mention what is the tip number witch is you use for celling and walls
What tip did you use? Looks like 515?
Good video. How many hours to get good on sprayer?
Hmmm, I don't feel like I got very good at it during this entire project. We painted the outside of the house a few months ago, and I started to feel more comfortable with the sprayer during that project.
@@CountryGirlLiving I see, so takes time .
Did you sand the ceiling also? Our ceilings are 16 foot high and it’s gonna be hard enough spraying.
Your ceilings are 17ft, you need to add 1ft for joists between the 1st and 2nd floor.
How long did it take you to paint all of that ?
Two days. Primer one day, finish coat the next day
Belinya dimana mana om
We paint walls first when spraying. Mask down and drop plastic much easier.
I will keep that in mind for the future. I considered doing that because I watched a few videos of other people doing it that way. But in my head, both ways seemed equally aggravating😂
Incase you spraying how many coat do you put
We did one coat of primer and one coat of the grey finish paint.
@@CountryGirlLiving very nice job 👏 I have one machine of those it's really good for latex primer , for oil paint a use a heavier pump
Why don’t you guys back roll anything?
Because we are not professional painters 😂
😍
And walls
Sounds like a Georgia/Alabama accent.
You gotta back roll that shit.
Why?
If you don't backroll the sheetrock will fuzz up and be a sanding nightmare
That's why they brushed all the dust of befor they painted, honestly I would only back to if it was new brick face stucco or EIFS
It should be bankrolled because spraygun spit sometimes on the wall or cieling when stop and start
🌞
Do you need a worker with you?
Not too much 90 degree going on.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🖐️🤚🖐️🤚🖐️🤚🙏🙏
And you can tell he is a rookie, you never stop on a pass, keep walking the ceiling I bet there are major halos and heavy spots on that ceiling
Whatbyou mean stop an a pass?
