Amazing New Drum Solo Technique-Ken Loomer

  • This is my drum solo that I did at my Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet concert at the Glenridge Performance Arts Center in Sarasota, Florida. I`m always trying out new idea`s on what to play using the drum technique I have learned over the years. At one point during my drum solo, I wanted to do something very simple with just the left hand doing fast singles, and the right hand just tapping the ride cymbal. This will give the solo a chance to bring down the level of sound and make people listen to what I`m playing in a simple way. Another new technique I thought of was playing on the edge of the cymbal with my left hand while my right hand was hitting the left stick to produce a clicking -cymbal sound. Through out this solo I`m doing new idea`s based on the technique that I have. I always want my drum solo to be exciting and interesting. The people will let me know right away if they like what they are hearing. Here I`m using my Gretsch Renown Maple drum set with the 16x20 inch bass drum, 9x12 inch tom, 14x14 floor tom, 5x14 snare, and a 5x10 soprano snare. These are excellent drums with all wide open full tone sound. I can clearly hear every beat and roll I`m playing and I love the smaller size drums with the music I play with my Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet. I will be posting more from this concert. You can also check out the many concerts I have posted of my Ken Loomer Big Band.

Like Buddy, I always want to give 100% in my performance and try out new idea`s on what to play. At the 3:04 mark, I made up this new technique on how to play a cymbal. I got to know Buddy Rich and he even gave me a drum lesson and let me play his Slingerland drums. The reason why I have my Ken Loomer Big Band is because I love the music he played so much. Glad I had my camera with me so many times showing pictures of me and Buddy. Here is the video showing those pictures ua-cam.com/video/BTsnnA6nlvk/v-deo.html I always honor Buddy by playing some of his great music at my concerts. Ken, you truly are one of the greats! Your control, precision, clarity, economy of motion, pulse, energy, style...all things of beauty. I will tell every musician that I know to check you out. No drummer that I've ever seen keeps the Buddy torch burning quite like you. I truly believe that you could share the stage with any of the greats of all era's, and deserve the space. Thank you so much for the inspiration. You ooze magic, and the lifetime of dedication and commitment to your instrument is awe inspiring.

I don`t know what to say Glenn about your kind works to me. It means a lot to me that someone like you would take the time to express how you feel about my playing. My goal was always to have my own bands, Jazz Quartet, Trio, and Big Band. With hard work and the desire to do it, I have done it. It`s always about the music first which is what I learned the most from Buddy. I love playing with my outstanding musicians and just supporting them to make the music feel good and exciting. When it`s my turn to do my one feature drum solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concerts. I always give a 100% in every performance that I do. The best for me is to play live music, no tracks, and to be able to express myself on the drums. I`m still learning all the time to be a better drummer and band leader. Thanks so much for your comment.

100% true. Only drummers and other musicians from that Big Band Era can truly appreciate your artistry. However...there ARE some very talented kids coming along now that are seeking all that great stuff out. And really playing it right. Total respect to them.

@@roadrocket7 That is so wonderful to hear that some of the new younger drummers are going back to find out about these greats of the past and learning how they played. I got to see in person drummers like Buddy Rich, Joe Morello, Gene Krupa, Louie Bellson, Elvin Jones, Sonny Payne, and so many others. I learned from all of them, and also the drummers of today. For me it`s always about the music first. That is why I have my own Big Band and Jazz Quartet. I`m hoping these young drummers will want to do the hard work of being a band leader and hire excellent musicians to play in their band. I employ a lot of outstanding musicians. I think just people know what I`m all about when they hear my Big Band and appreciate the music that I play. You can check this video I just posted of my swinging Ken Loomer Big Band ua-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/v-deo.html I did a big jazz festival last year to over 10,000 people and I had so many young people who said after my performance it was the first time they heard a jazz Big Band live and now are fans of my music and band. That`s the problem, these young people never get to hear the kind of music I play. But when they do, I get so many new fans.Well thanks for taking the time to write to me.

I came more out of the school of Ringo than Buddy but I always appreciated the great jazz masters and would siphon off little bits here and there of their astounding techniques. I started in 6th grade on snare drum and I remember staying up late one night and seeing Louie Bellson on the Tonight Show, it blew my mind. Seeing the relaxed ease Louie had in his wrists helped me greatly as I learned the rudiments. This cat has that same relaxed, effortless style that belies the actual Herculean effort he's putting in. This was a lyrical, well arranged and extremely exciting drum solo...just incredible.

What a very thoughtful and wonderful comment you just wrote to me. Since I grew up with the music of the Beatles in the 60`s, I always loved Ringo Starr. Like he said, I can`t even do a roll, but his drumming for the Beatles was just perfect. The drum parts he made up like Come Together was way ahead of what drummers were doing back then. I got to know Louie Bellson very well. He even gave me a few drum lessons and let me play in his band. It was the same with Buddy Rich. I looked at these two drummers and everything they played at a high level looked so easy for them to play. I got to know Buddy Rich also and he gave me a lesson. Here is a video I made showing the pictures of me with Buddy and Louie and the stories I told about them. Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/BTsnnA6nlvk/v-deo.html The reason why I have my Ken Loomer Big Band is because of Buddy and Louie. Buddy Rich was the one who told me don`t let anyone tell you it can`t be done to have a Big Band. Just work hard and go for it young man. Well I did work hard and form my own Ken Loomer Big Band. Louie Bellson even sent to me some of his charts which I have played and posted it on my channel. Here is a new video I posted of a very demanding but amazing chart that Buddy Rich played called Porgy and Bess ua-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/v-deo.html For me, It`s always about the music first and I wanted to be a band leader who can hire great musicians and keep this great Big Band music alive. I want to give the people who come to my concerts the best performance possible. When I do a solo like this, I give it a 100% of my talent. I thank you so much for your letting me know what you thought about my performance.

The way you play with dynamics and the control of your sound, balance, musicality, etc. I'm very impressed by "the way you make your drumset sound" Even your sticks sounds like magic ! Thank you for this video. Now, I might goin to practice for ... maybe 20 years non stop, to reach (half of) that level of drumming.

That old school drumming that people understand. I want my solo to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concerts. Thanks Phil for your comment.

When I do these type of open drum solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic and always trying out new techniques. Always great for me to do these live concerts for the people who come to my concerts. Thanks Michael for your comment.

Like you, I always want to learn to get better as a drummer and band leader. I`m still learning all the time. Thanks for letting me know you got inspired with my performance at this concert. All my best to you with your drumming!

Probably the worlds' best drummer as at April 2023. (That's my personal opinion).

Believe me, I`m no where near being the best drummer. Maybe the best drummer band leader. Here I am the leader of my Ken Loomer Big Band with this new video ua-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/v-deo.html It`s always about the music first for me as a drummer band leader. I thank you Frank for your opinion and enjoy the new video link I gave to you.
