I think a good application is as follows: "I think that we need to be able to discern God's voice from ours. Eli didn't realize that God was talking to him multiple times. Sure, he was just a boy, but God was trying to reach him. Reading God's word will help us discern the voice of God from our own."
He was the high priest and had a responsibility to lead the people closer God but yet failed to lead his own sons. They commited detestable acts in the tabernacle in the presence of God and when Eli was confronted by the church of his sons acts he didnt do justice in correcting them. (1 sam 2:27-36)
@jaymhill correct me if I am wrong. Eli sons were said to also be Priests in the temple. So not only as a father he failed but also failed as a Priest to discipline them and uphold a Godly standard.

why God punish Eli for his sons? Eli in helpless situation i think....
