How To Tailor A Suit Jacket Yourself (EASY TUTORIAL)

In this video I'm going to show you how to tailor a suit jacket yourself. It's actually way easier than you think too!
The first thing you want to do is flip your jacket inside out. This jacket doesn't have a liner on it, but if it did all you would have to do is cut a hole on the bottom and pull your jacket through it to expose the seams. We're altering the two side seams on this jacket, but not the center seam. In the event that we wanted to we could do that but this jacket fits great in the middle of my back already.
We're putting what's called a double tapered straight stitch on these seams, meaning it's going to taper twice, as opposed to once like they would on dress shirt darts for example. Pin the seams up on the sides and try on your jacket to see if you like it If you do then you can proceed to stitching it up!
What you want to do is to put a straight stitch on there that's set at 2.5, or 2.5mm in length. You want your stitch tension to be pretty loose for this to avoid any puckering on the outside. Once your finished try it on again to see if you like it, and then you're done! No need to cut anything or finish it with a zigzag stitch.

I think that’s my fav so far. Not just because I need a “how to tailor your suit” but you made it so easy and u went straight to the point, Covering everything. Perfect video🙌🏻👏🏻👌🏻
I honestly think the runtime throws people off, but that's what happens when you cut the filler out lol.
"... Show guys like you". This video is helping a gal out so much! Thank you
Thanks. I love how you stick to the key steps and present them clearly in sequence plus mention pitfalls to look out for. Makes it so easy to follow.
Have you ever talked about using safety pins? You can put on your garment with safety pins and do the flex test and unlike sewing pins, you won't stab yourself or lose any pins in the process
Yup I have, but thanks for bringing it up for those who are unfamiliar with it!
@@StylishDTailors Oh, I wasn't aware of you talking about it 👍
I saw that tip on another channel and it helped me out a TON. Way better when you are doing your own tailoring and may need to take the garment on and off a few times to adjust pins. @stylishD def mention this trick in future videos as a lot of folks (like me) just follow everything you say 🤣
So that’s why they’re called safety pins. Neat.
Love it man, your videos have come a long way, I appreciate the guidance
I know right? I actually...show you what I'm doing lol.
I appreciate the feedback!
Got this exact jacket from target. Trying it on, it fit a little loose, but I knew you would have a video on how to tailor it! You’re the best man🙌🏻
Great work I got my wife a sawing machine 3 years ago she never used it I get my clothes altered all the time your videos have gave me the courage to give it a try myself thank you
Thank you! I just altered my first suit jacket that my son will wear to prom tonight. He got it at Goodwill. I appreciate that he is a thrifty shopper which motivated me to learn how to DIY it.
That is awesome!
You're energetic while doing the video, that's what sets you above a lot of sewing UA-camrs... Keep it going brother. It helps us stay focused.👍
I’m going to try this on a long jacket that normally pulls the waiter in via cheap lacing on the outside. The lacing hoops have broken and if I can do this, I’ll be so happy!
Your video is so straightforward and clear I might actually manage it.
Boom! Right to the point, all the important details, and totally do-able by someone with no experience. Impressive!
I bet a lot of people are looking at the length thinking "there's no way it can be that quick". Well it is when you cut out the fluff!
At last! Someone who makes a suit jacket alteration look EASY! Thanks man
dude your energy is immaculate & your advice amazing, thank you!
I appreciate that!
Aye, keep this up, been waiting on it.
this video is AMAZING
short, educational, on point with Rizz
Only just found you, love how you simplifie what is needed tobe done to taylor the jacket. Im only a beginer, so i need tp keep it simple, so thank you for this 🙏
Funny dance at the end when the jacket tailored haha😂. Luckily i can borrow a sewing machine from school(im from sweden) so i wont need to buy one. Thanks man, I look a little bit blocky with my black suit.
My Sister's wedding is in June, I now have time to make as many mess ups as I need 😅 Thnxs SD
You got this!
Great tutorial, I was terrified to take the lining loose as you did. However, it gives a clear picture of the actual sides of the jacket. Also I want to take the middle of the back in as well. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.👍🙏
I don't like long intros either, you're awesome
I was looking to take in my vest, and I’m happy I found this video! Easy, quick and informative:)
A galaxy man! That's why, this was such an easy tutorial. Great job 😅
NGL, I jumped into the Apple Ecosystem a few years ago and haven't looked back since!
Cheers my friend. Done this in 30 minutes (50 if you count the sleeves too). Bought my jacket on clearance and was a bit too big so glad I’ve been able to tailor it. Thanks
Super dope man!
Thank you SD for making the video anyway, my sewing will be on hold, my apartment flooded today😥, when everything is settled I'll get back to it, I tailored about 15 pairs of dress pants so far though, I was working on those now its being delayed obviously, have a great day and again great video
Man I'm so sorry to hear that!! Hows the job hunt?
@@StylishDTailors nothing yet, hopefully I'll hear something tomorrow and I still have to clean out the apartment because water soaked through all of the carpeting, it was ankle high when I saw it, I was out doing some in person applications. Sheila was at work, just a disaster and having to move stuff around now, yes its just a bad stretch for me
i waited for this tutorial so long, nice work!
Thank you so much. This is exactly what I was looking for. I really appreciate your help.
You're very welcome!
Exactly what I need. Simple and encouraging. Thank you :-)
Glad it was helpful!
This is great but what about sleeve length? Thanks
It can be done but isn't as beginner friendly thats for sure.
@@StylishDTailors thanks!
I am so excited to try this! thanks so much
On your way to 100k!!! Let's go!!!
Perfect timing sir
I love this guy, he is funny.
“Does yours look like mine? Yeah!” Lmaoooo you’re awesome🎉 thank you so much 🤝
Hopefully when I finally get a sewing kit this will be helpful to me
First, these videos are great, I found you from your Reddit chain. Second, my mom's sewing hack was to put the pins perpendicular to the fabric and then to sew over them. I find it easier to sew without stopping and then I take the pins out at the end. Is there a reason you don't do this? I never have puckering or broken needles!
Thanks for the kind words! And I put the pin parallel because you risk your needle hitting your pin otherwise.
Another great one SD!
Thank you thank you. Very easy and to the point. 🙏🏽🦋
Don't know if I'm brave enough(yet) to do the suit jacket! Thanks for the cool video. :-)
Only one way to find out...
Thank you so much!!! I was able to help someone in a pinch. I feel like a professional 😎😎😎 oh yeah😁
Great job! I bet they were super grateful!!
Great. What would you do with a shirt if you only would do one thing, take in the sides or create darts?
If I HAD to chose one I would choose darts.
@@StylishDTailors Thanks!
Thank alot because i alwase wear a suit (its my opinion in fashion) and you helped me with me jacket
Hi SD! I'm inspired by your videos! You give me the confidence I need to believe I can do the work and get started!! My son is 6"1" and very lean, most clothes are not made to fit him. I've taken in shirts and put in darts, taken in vests, I just finished a suit coat :)
One side of the suit coat turned out perfect the other side appears a bit puckered or like I may have the fabric slightly twisted, will that press out in a dry-clean or should I release the stitch and begin again? I've already cut the fabric at the old seam (even you said not to) so, I don't have a proper edge : /
Were you able to get this resolved? I would suggest trying an iron first and then seeing if that takes care of it
Thanks man your a saviour
Going to try this by hand, tonight! My grandmother's funeral is on Friday. Of my four jackets, two are too small, while the others are too big!!
I’m sorry for your loss, how were the results?
You mentioned that the center of this jacket fits you well, but how do you know whether it does or not?
Mainly due to how it feels in my shoulders and mid-back, it pulls a bit and feels tight. If it were baggy in the middle then I would alter the center seam as well. All in all try pinning up the center seam as well, try it on and see how you feel about it!
sweet jesus thank you amen for this man showing me how to tailor my husbands suit for a wedding this weekend 😍😍
How was the wedding??
Yay! My next project (after making some more bow ties and ascots.)
This guy the goat
Tom Brady ain't got nothing on me!
Love from 🇮🇳 India ❤️
Thank you for the informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
Thats awesome any chance you will also do a video showing removing the lining and taking in the shoulders, just like my shirts I find my jackets never fit well off the rack
Yep I’m on it!
Thanks for the video. What if we do want to take out some bulk between the shoulders?
Different skill set but still worth a tutorial. Not very easy for beginners though!
How do I know how much I need to take in the blazer? Does it change if I am doing a double breasted suit blazer?
What brand is your machine? And do you got any recs for a good starter machine?
I use a Brother ST371HD but honestly any big box store sewing machine will get the job done for ya.
I love it and subscribed! But how do you know if every other part of the jacket fits you correctly? (eg shoulders) And if not, can you alter those too? I'm also wondering if you could use tailor's chalk instead of using so many pins, but I don't sew often so I'm not sure.
I would figure out your measurements to see what the proper fit is. And yes, you can definitely use tailors chalk.
Great video keep up the good work...
Thanks!
Good content!
Thank you so much!
Very helpful!!
Glad it was helpful!
One day I WILL buy a sewing machine for my gf (yeah right, for her... 😅) But in the meantime... Man, you are so cool that I wanna grab a bear with you and chat a bit even though I'm like 10000km away. :D keep up the great work 💪
I like Coors Light...I'm just throwing that out there!
🐻😉
if arms are put infront and at the back of the shoulder and the back the material feels thigh does that mean that the jacket is small?
Not necessarily, jackets usually fit fine in the shoulders and upper back. It's the mid and lower back that's the problem (at least for me).
Oh wow. Thanks man. I was this close to throwing out a jacket. Bummer you can't see how close to touching my fingertips are.
*THIS CLOSE*
Good luck on tailoring them my man! Let us all know how it goes, reach out with any questions!
Would this also apply to a 100% wool peacoat jacket? I found a killer Navy issued wool peacoat. The problem is, it’s a 42R. And I’m a 38R. I know that’s a significant size difference. I guess my question is, is this a possible project without the messing it up. Or is that too much material to lose
Id honestly say with that size difference you wouldn't like the end result.
You are a monster 🇧🇷 thank you from brazil
You're welcome!
Is there a specific kind of needle to use with this? And the thread, should it be polyester?
A universal needle will work fine but a denim one is acceptable as well! And yes polyester thread is best!
Could I use the same method for a peacoat or do you already have a video for that??
Yup you can use the same method
Great tutorial, minor complaint about the audio in the tutorial video and the please subscribe midroll being two different volumes
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! I'll be sure to be mindful of that next time
How do you find the right amount to taper in? Like when determining the distance between the pins?
You can try using safety pins and pin the inside of the jacket and try it on and see how you feel about the fit
This is great
I wish you were closer to wear I’d live. I wish I could get you to alter my clothes. Every single time I go get any of my clothes tailored. They always mess it up so I end up paying for something I still cannot wear. 😖
Im a 5'6 guy weighing about 250 what size suit should I be looking to buy
Hmm good question...I'm honestly not good with suit sizes sorry!
Dude.... get a tailored suit.
I've been hitting my workouts consistently for years, now my old jackets don't fit because I have wider shoulders and arms, but when I bought a jacket that fits them, it is WAY TOO WIDE at the waist, it looks like I borrowed it from my dad. It looks horrible and tomorrow I have a job interview with it. Wish me luck
Love the content but you think you could show us how to put it back together please 🙏🏻
Elaborate?
How did you sew the bottom of the suit?
Everything you see is everything I did to the suit
I dont understand wouldn't the extra material stick out the sides
Nope not at all!
@@StylishDTailors yeah I figured it out when I did it myself thank u so much my suit looks so much better I have a bit of a problem tho my middle goes in alot compared to my shoulders and I'm not even that big so when I pinned it up it doesn't look quite right bc I couldn't make the curve gradual my middle just goes in to much is there a way I can contact u so I can get some advice also when I sewed it up onto the arms there is kind of a fold in the armpit is that supposed to be there
I’m using this for a cosplay suit I’m diying:) thank you for the video :3
No problem 😊
@@StylishDTailors it worked really well! Thank you so so much
A bit above my skills but you can see the result is 100% worth it.
You would be surprised honestly! You got this!
Is it possible to make higher armholes?
Yup you can burn I wouldn’t as a beginner
Wow 😲 that actually looks easy.. I guess that’s why you the man.. Peace ✌🏾 and chicken 🐓 grease..
I know right? Always surprises people!
can you show how u determine ur size? :p
It’s mostly a trial and error process really
Watching this after literally spending what I make at my job in 17 hours on a tailor
What about if the arms are too loose
You can adjust the arms too but it’s tricky
If your jacket does have lining, there is no need to cut the bottom of it. If you turn your jacket inside out almost every suit jacket with lining has external stitching in one or both of the sleeves meant to be used for alterations.
Solid tip! Thanks for sharing for everyone!
@@StylishDTailors My pleasure. Stay swaggy y'all.
@boomshotta So do I sew over the lining or would it be a better idea to remove it??
@BuckSkeinJoe you can remove the external stitching on the lining sleeve, which will allow you to reach in and pull out the actual jacket fabric so you can make the alterations. It's like turning the jacket inside out if that makes sense. When done with the alterations, you can then sew the lining back up where you removed the stitching on the sleeve.
how do I shorten jacket?
Man, i fingers itch when i see how close your nails are from the sharp part of the needle.
You're dancing 😁🤣
Trying...trying to dance...
@0:54 Lemon Squeezy 😂
why didn't you show the result on the front?
Because it's easier for you to see the difference by comparing the back on both shots.
@@StylishDTailors I'm sure though, most of us would be happy to compare the fronts too. After all, that's also an important thing to see, isn't it? Especially most people will pay attention to the front.
I love you
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I don't have a sewing machine 😢.
Nope, I’m not even gonna try this, unless I pick up a few suit jackets at the local 2nd hand store.
👍
Boom!
SD, bruv, that's a sports jacket.
Correct, however the construction between the two is exactly the same and the concept of slimming them is identical minus the lining on the inside.
@@StylishDTailors yeah, I just wanted to be the smart-ass that's points it out in the comments 🤣
Can I just pay someone to do my jackets ?…. I’m in Dc
You keep moving around too much when showing the finished product. Your tutorials are really great, but you don't focus enough on the finished product. You should do a 360 rotation of yourself and let the shot hang. Also stop moving please 😔. Moving around like that is really hard to see the work you've done. Pretty much every single video you're always in such a rush to finish it. Once a viewer has gotten all the way to the end of the video, they're gonna stick around because you've got them watching. People want to see the finished product, not have it flashed then the end card.
I understand you want your content snappy and to the point, but it's WAY too fast. To be frank it comes across disingenuous and like you've got something to hide at the end. I REALLY like your content but it legitimately makes me so annoyed when the video isn't long enough at the end showcasing the end product and I don't have enough time to see the end product properly.
I'm sorry you feel that way about my tutorials. I film them in a way to give you the most relevant information as quickly as possible. Most people wanna know how to do the thing, not listen to me ramble for the first 2 minutes, and then have a random conversation about my dog for 30 seconds in the middle of it. Or my favorite, have really crappy camera angles so I can't tell what's even going on. I hate that.
Why would you be annoyed at the end? I show you the finished product at the beginning. I show you the end result in the first 20 seconds. If anything I would be annoyed clicking on a video about how to alter a suit jacket, and then listen to them apologize for not uploading recently (no one cares) then listen to them explain WHY they're doing it (no one cares) and then spend 30 seconds asking me to smash the like button, subscribe with notifications on, and make sure to sign up for their email list (no one cares, they just wanna know how to do the thing they saw in the title).
So if anything, you're welcome?
If the jacket is worth anything it’s worth taking it to a tailor. The jacket shown looks like crap to begin with.
How so?
