How Easily To Tailor A Jacket | DIY Tailoring

  • I picked up this jacket at Target on clearance for $4 but it needs some work. Let's tailor it to make it look expensive together!
    First thing we need to do is measure it. I'm taking off an inch and a quarter off of the side seams, and I'm taking off an inch on the sleeves. I have to take off so much that it runs really close to the pockets, but that's okay, most of you won't have this problem at all.
    Now it's time to sew it, and we just need to follow along where our sewing pins are. I ended up having my thread break, which is ok, just start off where you left off before, it happens. We're also using a denim needle for the first time because this is a thicker jacket so we want to make sure that we use the right needle for it.
    I usually finish my seams with a zigzag stitch, but this time we will be using some pinking shears. They're great because they cut a zigzag pattern in our seam to prevent it from fraying.
    And that's it! This jacket looks better than every other jacket that I own, and it was only $4!!

      The final product looks great! For future flex tests I would suggest basting the jacket (sewing together with large stitches that can be easily torn out if further adjustment is needed.)

    2:40 you can do a basting stitch for the flex test: lowest tension, biggest distance straight stitch, don't cut after sewing. this stitch isn't durable, but it doesn't stab you and it's super easy to take out. you can sew over them when finishing, or take them out.

    • @MetaMarcy21
      @MetaMarcy21 5 років тому +6

      jord b The seem is functionally finished- the pinking sheers will prevent the fabric from fraying, ensuring that the seem will stay intact. For a nicer looking seem, you can cut a straight seem and sew along the edge with a zigzag stitch (as he mentioned), use a serger, which is what you see on most store bought garments), or, on lighter weight fabrics, use a French seem, which encapsulates the raw edge of the fabric inside another seem. Pinked edges are common on homemade garments.

    • @suzanne3759
      @suzanne3759 5 років тому +6

      @@jordb6122 this basting stitch is a temporary seam, so the pins don't poke you while you figure out if the garment fits. if you find they are good, go over them in normal settings, take out the bating stitch and cut off the excess.

    Although I’m cringing at almost everything you are suggesting, I think your awesome for showing young men that they can take care of themselves. Since you have broad shoulders and a narrow waist you could also stop the side seam at the arm pit. That fabric won’t fray as much as denim so a zig zag stitch. Canvas has a tighter weave. I’ve been sewing for decades.

    I don’t have that courage to endure that much pins poking me thou agree try to on before sewing!
    And everyone who sews needs a seam ripping tool to be able to unpick any thread lines no longer wanted. The tool will be your best friend helping you with seams unwanted on purpose or by mistake. And when you use it you’ll realize although can solve most seam mistakes on fabrics you’ll want to avoid if possible making them. Sew definitely try on often when sewing garments.
    Also pins & sewing needles for different fabric weights help with process n results.
    I love sewing!

    Really nice. You should, if possible, highly recommended, to lock the seam with serger/overlock. But I understand no many will have it at home. Any kind of locking stich is still recommended, like zig-zag.

    • @StylishDTailors
      @StylishDTailors  5 років тому +1

      I usually use the zigzag stitch, but I always do that so I wanted to do something different for a change.

    • @tekknorat
      @tekknorat 5 років тому

      @@StylishDTailors yes, I just stated the obvious, because You already mentioned that You're not going to use zig-zag stitch this time, but in general, it's a good idea to secure such stitches. Anyways, if it holds together like this, there is no need for a locking stitch.

    Another thing to use instead of pinking sheers is a surge. I love Surgers, they make a wonderful clean seam.

    S D : Glad I found your tutorials. You're a true inspiration !! Now - I need to shorten the sleeves of my much treasured Billy Jack Wrangler zipper type denim jacket . BUT - I don't want to muck it up ( they're very rare ) Very close to taking it to a tailor , but you're so positive and cover everything so well , I'm considering shortening the sleeves myself . Spent the week end poking through DAVs for any jean jackets to practice on . No dice . Will go out again . Can you do a video on denim sleeve shortening ? Thanks for all your hard work .

    I wonder if I could do same on my cheapo motorcycle jacket to make it fit better. Would have to use strong thread and make double or triple sewing runs, but I guess it should work. Thanks for the video!

      I'd be more worried about your machine being able to handle it to be honest.

    Stylish D, what do we do if we want to taper the sleeves like you did in this video but also shorten the sleeves by perhaps an inch?
