You were right the first time. It is 1.3 inches bigger :) Great video! We are kinda debating between Gladiator and Outback Wilderness. Looking forward to your experiences!
Lolol thanks for the help! That’s a really tough choice and I’m grateful I don’t have to make it. Let me get some real seat time in the wilderness and I can give a true comparison.
I have a 2021 AEV Jeep 392 Rubicon sitting in my garage next to my 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness… I’m fixing to sell my Jeep because my Outback Wilderness is FAR SUPERIOR as a daily driver, inclement weather vehicle and can literally go where I USUALLY take my Jeeps. This damn thing is AMAZING! -nuff said
Awesome choice man! I just ordered mine this week. Can’t wait to see the upgrades you do. Definitely going to need some ideas on what to do first. Keep the vids coming!
@@BrandonGipsonVids I ordered it mid November and just called Subaru of America last week and was told I might be taking delivery sometime in January. I still don’t have a VIN number yet. Subaru told me to call back after the new year and I might be able to get an exact date.
@@BrandonGipsonVids I just went to a dealership. Gerald Jones Subaru of Augusta. Very pleasant experience. I don’t know if there is a way to ordering online. I did not try.
You made the right choice, My sister has an older outback. I cant remember what year model it is but she has 160,000 miles on it, She has never had any major issues with it. I bought a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek almost 3 years ago, I love it. Its great on the freeway and off road, It get 35 mpg and its way better than my Ford FX4 that I traded in. Its also great in snow and heavy rain, I think you will be very happy with your Beautiful Outback.
For some reason people don’t believe this vehicle is a viable option for an overland vehicle or light duty off-roader. I’m excited to continue this build and see what kind of obstacles it can take on, I believe it’s a lot more capable then what it appears. Thanks for the comment!
Just got the Outback Wilderness in white as well. Was cross shopping with a 4Runner and couldn't be happier with our decision. We though long and hard about what capability we need and decided that we aren't interested in extremely technical trails or rock crawling. The OBW will be our off-road vehicle and our general road trip vehicle. It's extremely comfortable, relatively economical and is very safe. It's also more than capable of what we need it to do.
Listen, I love the 4 runners and we looked at one last year as a replacement for my wife’s Jeep, but decided against it because it just felt dated. The wilderness is an awesome option for so many people. Obviously you won’t be able to do crazy technical stuff, but the other 95% of the time when you’re just enjoying a trip and tackling gravel roads it will be perfect. Thanks again!
Don't even think twice, I just bought my 22 Subaru Outback Wilderness and it kicks ass! it is so much quicker than I thought. 0-60 5.8 second , not a dog at all. Cant wait to watch you build it out. I iamb going on a quick run to Sedona tomorrow (Liver in Scottsdale, AZ). Taking a moderate road, can't qwait to see how it handles the big stuff....
I picked up the same Wilderness last week. Best decision I ever made. It feels and drives safe. I dove wrangler Unlimited for many years and and a few Audi’s. This Outback is an amazing machine and offers all then versatility our family needs.
I am shopping for new Outback Wilderness myself now! New sub. Also gonna order a HYKOutdoors teardrop this year after seeing it on your channel. Good honest stuff, man!
I love it. As a matter of fact, I've ordered one (it will take 12+ weeks to build then deliver...due to supply-chain issues esp, computer chips). Come Groundhog Day-ish, I'll have a new Outback Wilderness
This just maid my day I'm a Subie fan with a 2002 Outback and a 2003 Baja sport that I'm building into a Overland vehicle but I'm not bias against Jeep's or any other vehicles love the Toyotas and we just sold are ZR2 two door Blazer with having a broken back the two door's got to small. Like you said 95 percent of Overlanders don't rock climb the Outback specially the wilderness is just perfect Awesome AWD system Awesome amount of room comfortable driving can still hold a roof top tent the ground clearance on the Subarus are great cause there's no diff pumpkins under there for me and the family with 7 older kid's and 9 grand babies the Outbacks or the Subarus in general are just great for us and what we do so now if I want to rock climb I'll just tow me a side by side with my Subaru thank you and thanks for the videos keep going, and remember stay safe and Overland safely!!!!
Thanks for the comment and the great input! I have to say that I absolutely love my wilderness and if you would have asked me two years ago if I would have a Subaru I would have probably laughed out loud. The vehicle is great for so much of what we do and if I need to grab the hammer and get after some rough trails I have the option! Thanks again!
Love this content. I’m new to your channel. I’m right now doing my homework and highly considered buying the Outback wilderness. It would be used as my daily driver 30 min commute. Plus all of our outdoor adventures. Now I don’t climb rocks but I do camp, ride ATVs ,snow board and play on beach. We live in Oregon. Please keep all the tips and tricks coming.
Thanks for the video, makes sense . I've actually bought one 20 days ago drove it about 1000 miles already, love it . The hardest part of my purchase decision was picking the color lol, I kept debating between the blue or the white , I ended up going with the blue one because it's exclusive to the wilderness edition only and blue is kind of the subaru trade mark lol , especially in the WRX. I'll post a video soon and see what you think .
@@roamingwithjosh will do. Fair warning I'm not an expert on posting videos, I've posted few videos about my fish tanks as you can see on my channel using Samsung galaxy camera, nothing fancy like you do lol
All-in-one type of car. Very practical, off-road capable, decent amount of cargo room, great in all-weather, easy to drive, good MPG compared to other overland vehicles.
Great content. I have an OBW too. Where did you locate your 6-pin receiver for your hitch? Can you show me some pics? Mine is located so close to the hitch that I’m having trouble locking the hitch on
This is a great video, but you should know the forester’s towing capacity is only 3000 lbs (500 less than the jeep) and the wrangler rubicon’s ground clearance is l0.8 ( 1.1” more than the forester wilderness )
I've had both of those as well and don't get me wrong, I miss my raptor dearly, but I don't miss the payment or the gas I was burning because I wanted to go fast! Thanks for the comment!
Great video. I’ve enjoyed many of your videos. I was looking at Raptors as I’m trading in my F150. With gas prices and the Wilderness’s functionality. It’s a no brained.
Thank you, I appreciate it! I was looking at raptors too and if the wait time would have been less I may have gone that route. I’m not unhappy with the wilderness at all either!
I get 19mpg in my manual Rubicon Gladiator. Steel bumper all options minus cold weather... no need where I am. That's in stock form with an added soft topper covering the bed.
@@roamingwithjosh that's mixed driving. It all depends on driving habits and style. I do try to keep aware of my millage somewhat. In city start stop does help... as much as people hate it especially with a manual it takes time for some to get used to it. In my experience it helps anywhere from 0.2 to 0.5 MPG. I no hyper miler by any means. Well can't be in when driving a brick lol 🙃
I just bought an OBW and I need to sell my 05 Jeep Rubicon…there is a line of people standing by for the chance to buy it which makes me wary because WHAT IF I REGRET IT!?
Knee jerk reaction is FAMILY!!! The main thing I'm seeing in comments or lack of is Family oriented. Having a baby to me would be the biggest selling point. 1st mod I'd recommend is trans cooler with fan & ScanGaugeII. As for someone that owns an Excursion & a Subbie OB I still drive the Subbie more. Out of All the trails in NC the Subbie can do 80% of them. If I want to crawl over 2 ft boulders it's nice to have the Excursion. Butt out of All the times I was glad for the Excursion the Need for it was only an hour worth. Good for you for thinking about the Future. Don't really need bigger tires, get smaller rims first.
I appreciate the kindness and forethought. People have a tendency to be angry and truly mean bc they generally suck. The family always comes first and we are blessed to have two awesome vehicles that can give us both comfort and capability. I would love to pick your brain sometime about the subi bc I’m new to this and don’t really know anyone that has one. Thanks again!
Just got lucky, our local dealer had a white one... Absolutely dig it and I've had just about everything... 5.9 0-60 was unexpected... Perfect for what I want.
Right on brother. We are a Jeep and Suby family as well. 2021 Gladiator Rubicon diesel and 2019 Subaru Forester. Love them both for totally different reasons.
Great video man. I do have a question. Do you feel the engine power is sufficient on the outback wilderness compared to your jeep? Apologize if this question has been answered. Thanks.
The top end power is mind blowing compared to the jeep, but the low end torque for getting over rocks is terrible in the Outback. That’s the one issue that sucks to people coming from the jeep world.
Knee-Jerk? OK. Rides great, good MPG, and still gets you on the trail to the campsite. I own a killer 2018 but I know that's as far as I can go, even with the mods. Best vehicle I have owned in the last 35 years.
I don’t disagree with the vehicle being an awesome all around vehicle and for most of the people who buy them they will take them far beyond their intended destination. Thanks again for the input!
I have a OBW on order and I am very interested in how this vehicle evolves with your family. You picked up an extra subscriber just to keep tabs on your time with this vehicle.
I'm looking to purchase a Subaru Outback Wilderness as my daily drive commute from work and home and occasionally camping on the weekend. However, I'm kinda scare of the CVT engine because a lot of bad review with the start stop issue. How is your experience with the Subaru outback wilderness?
The transmission is definitely any Subarus point of weakness. However, I haven’t had any serious issues with mine and I turn the start stop button off every time I get into the vehicle. I enjoy my OBW for what it is and I try to keep in mind it’s limitations.
If I could only have 1 it would have to be our power wagon because of its interior space and towing capability. I would take the power wagon on overlanding trips because it’s a better all around vehicle with more capability than our Outback wilderness.
Thanks for the video. I am a wildlife, bird photographer and bought a wrangler JK unlimited to use in the trails and to get to some out of reach places. Since then, we moved near the beach and I got addicted to the open top feel of the Jeep for just cruising around with family. The Jeep is getting old and I am loving the look of the wilderness for my photography but I feel like I will be missing out on the fun of the open top for the other things the Jeep is good for. Not sure what to do! Seems like this wilderness is a very capable vehicle and I’ve never owned a Subaru before!! I’m thinking about it. Also debating the new bronco too
I was just telling my wife how I miss having the doors off the jeep after I saw one driving down the road! I use the wilderness for storm chasing photography as well as getting myself into spots to use my camera and it's the perfect vehicle for that! I drove a bronco a while back and if you have the windows cracked at all they rattle against the door frame... That was all I needed to hear to walk the other way on it. Good luck!
@@roamingwithjosh thank you. I am really on the fence. My Jeep is nice to look at, has a good lift, 2011 but the person before me messed up the headlights to where the drivers side goes in and out. Very frustrating. And when it rains hard, the lights and blinkers, wipers can stop working. Typical Chrysler product. Lol. So I’m thinking of jumpin into a Subaru. Love the open top feel though. But it’s definitely showing it’s age the Jeep.
Actually - you didn't touch on safety between the two. The OBW has loads of standard safety tech and honestly, I would come out safer in a head to head collusion in an Outback vs a Jeep (probably because of the rollover effect). The OBW and any Subaru is hands down one of the top 3 safest vehicles on the road and only mentioning it because you intend the use the OBW on more highway and city roads.
Subaru's have been tested to be number 1 in safety for years now. Even when I got my 2010 it was rated the safest for passengers when getting into accidents. It's due to how their structural frame is reinforced.
My wife and I are actually contemplating selling our gladiator Rubicon and getting a wilderness because we do 80% to 90% of our driving and adventuring on very very normal serviceable roads and what not. Are gladiators our main car and we don’t drive the vehicle terribly and the Rubicon gets 15.5 average miles per gallon for us here. I get you don’t buy a jeep for fuel mileage but when it’s listed that it could get 22 highway and possibly 4 miles per gallon more combined, it’s hard to swallow filling that tank 678 times a month with as much as we drive. I actually think this might be our next car if I can convince myself that it’s a better choice than our current gladiator Rubicon
Wow, that’s tuff. I’m not sure I could get rid of my gladiator and I’m happy my wife allowed me to keep both. The gas mileage is a huge difference, I’m just under 22mpg combined for 2250 miles. If you don’t use the gladiator for what it’s intended for then I don’t think there’s even a question to be answered, go wilderness. That’s my two cents.
I think that's key. If you're doing most of your driving on normal, or even a bit rough, roads, the Outback does quite well. It's not a rock crawler, which the Jeep is/can be (I assume depending on how it's outfitted). When you're not off roading (which is a bit of a misnomer - You're on a road, typically, just a dirt / possibly rough road) then you're on the highway and I think the Outback really shines there. It strikes a nice balance between going off the beaten path and day-to-day driving to and from home/work/grocery store, etc. It doesn't mean Jeeps aren't awesome. They are. I think of them as more "true off roading" - meaning you're no longer on a dirt/rough rough but more of a trail that is kept up, mostly, just by Jeeps driving over them.
I may have missed the answer to this, but when you said she needed to come up a bit, did you give it an actual lift? Or just bigger tires? I love the way yours sits.
Your awesome I’m in the same boat I own a 2022 392 but I never get to use it so instead I have a 100k mall crawler I’m talking to a local dealer now to order a 2023 outback wilderness getting only 12 miles gallon sucks, and I’m not going to miss my $1500 monthly payments. Thank you ❤
It's a tough pill to swallow, but honestly it's been a better all round experience. I obviously can't tackle the same trails, but everything else I do is cheaper and more comfortable.
Got rid of my beloved FJ for an Autumn Green OBW. Loving is so far! Just made more sense for me at this point in my life, despite loving every second of my FJ.
My Wilderness arrived 3 weeks ago and I'm thrilled with it. I don't do a lot of off-roading but what little I do, I'm sure this Subie will handle it. Comfort, value and economy was what sold me.
I love your points about the Outback Subaru Wilderness. I purchased mine about 4 months ago and love it. I traded in a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee High Altitude and I don't regret it. I hated driving it on dry pavement. It drove great on wet surfaces, but on dry surfaces, it wanted to sway you left or right. I had owned a All-Wheel drive several years ago and enjoyed it so much, I was wanting to go back to that after I got rid of this Cherokee. On another note, I enjoy power when needed. A point that you did not bring out is that the Outback Wilderness will go 0-60 in about 5.9 seconds, which is only about 1/2 second slower than the Subaru WRX. When I got my Wilderness, I added the body side molding and the extra cladding above the doors which really enhances the look. I also bought the protection for the inside back and sides. It really stands out. Another reason I bought the Wilderness is for the 11 1/2 inch GPS. I am older and have trouble focusing on things close, so this does it for me. Before getting my Wilderness, I knew that the sound system only came with 6 speakers. I figured that would be a sorry sound system, I was wrong. This has the best 6 speaker system, so those who are skeptical, don't let this detour you from considering this vehicle. Also, this Wilderness has some of the softest interior that I have ever felt on a vehicle that cost 41,000. It is worth checking out if you are at all interested.
Everything you just said is absolutely accurate. I didn’t even think about the wilderness and how quick it can be when you need it. I can’t even begin to think about another vehicle that offers as much as the wilderness does for the price. Thanks for the comment and happy trails!
I have ordered mine and will receive it next week. Super excited about it! Thanks for mentioning about the sound system, I was skeptical about it. Feeling better after seeing what you said on it.
@@ThePhysicalMediaFan When I first got in and turned the radio on, it was just bland. Just adjust the setting for your sound preferences and it changes your perspective. Oh yeah, the seat came in with it all the way up and raised high. If you are tall, just lower the seat and believe me, a 6-6 person can fit it in then. Makes a big difference. I will tell you the other add-ons that I put on. I put a radar detector directly above my head. It is so high above your head that it does not obstruct your vision. I also put a video camera on the passenger side. It looks like part of the Subaru Eyesight and is out of the way of all. I also got all the body cladding and body side moldings that you can add on for the exterior. Not sure what color you are getting but all of the cladding is black. The body side molding if you get will be the color of your car unless you specify different. If I did not buy black, I might have considered black molding instead of the color of the car because of the all the black cladding around the car. It takes some getting use to, but I love the look of all the cladding and it protects your vehicle too. Inside the interior, I bought the Cargo Sidewall Protector and the Rear Seat Protector. It makes the back stand out. If you have never owned a Subaru before, make sure you get your dealer to show you how to open the gas lid and hood or you will be Youtubing both..lol, because I had to. I hope you enjoy.
@@ThePhysicalMediaFan If you want any of those add-ons, call your dealer and let them know you are interested in those add-ons and to give you a price and difference in payment. It should only add a few dollars to the payment. I hope you enjoy it.
As a Wrangler owner myself, I guarantee you that Jeep doesn’t account for the roll bars when computing that interior space. Those things take up an enormous amount of room and they are calculating from the fiberglass roof to the floor. As I’m sure you are aware, it is immediately evident when you sit in an Outback, that there is far more space than in a Wrangler.
I agree with that statement entirely. The nice thing about the jeep is the aftermarket support they have. That's one thing the Subaru community is missing.
I subbed for subi content I just parked mine in the driveway today its a great vehicle if it fits your needs. The most I'll tow with it is a jet ski or golf cart and it'll mostly be used in suburban settings however the summers I spend at the lake house and others lake house's which does bring me into the back back country and the winters can see enough snow to shut down the entire city even with hundreds of snow plows so this sucker will see some action.
New sub here... welcome to the Subaru family! My wife and I first was a '16 Crosstrek coming from 3 previous Wranglers... fell in love with our Crossie right away and after 6+ years, we still do! I'm really looking forward to see the Crosstrek Wilderness Edition when it finally comes out... might be the only reason I'd sell our '16s.
I sold my 2011, 2 door wrangler, (my jeepers) in November after putting a down on a Wilderness in October. My man was never a fan of jeeps & wanted me to be in a safer vehicle, plus the age. So going from Solo to a Family which are Goalie players. I needed the room & hopefully save on gas mileage. I love my jeep though she's a big of a pig 🐖. Lol My vehicles are my everyday primary vehicles, that I travel to work for as well pleasure. So I was doing alot of digging around to figure what is the next best step to be. I should be hearing from the dealership any day now, that I will be able to pick it up. So hopefully soon & hopefully be able to enjoy my new ride. Best wishes to you & your family in your new vehicle.
Knee-jerk reaction to your statement. Rubicon to a “goat” I mean a Subaru Outback. Freakin love it, I’ve owned a 2008 Rubicon and I’m looking to purchase a 2023 Subaru Outback XT. Fingers crossed. Love the brand, the styling and the people….
My knee-jerk reaction (realization) happened the moment you mentioned “family needs”. I immediately understood that the Subaru Outback Wilderness offered a more tailored experience to meet your families specific dynamics. I Am a huge fan of both Jeep Wrangler and The Subaru lineup, especially the Wilderness trim level. I believe both brands offer a lot to a diverse market seeking to travel off the beaten paved road, and into the adventurous outdoors. For the extreme off-road enthusiasts, the Jeep Wrangler I believe will most likely always wear the crown. However, as you mentioned, the affordability, reliability, and safety of the Subaru brand has a lot to offer the vast majority of what most nature loving families require to reach their outdoor endeavors.
In addition, I admire and respect Subaru’s contribution to support environmental and humanitarian efforts worldwide. I can proudly stand behind a company that contributes to making a positive impact that is helping wildlife, natural resources, and communities across our amazing planet. I firmly believe that if you want to be the receiver in life, than you also have to be the giver. You can’t just take, you have to give back. It is a law and principle of the Universe that governs our physical reality-you reap what you sow!
@@roamingwithjosh I have them after a year of spacers and man!! They’re solid. There are adjustable coilovers buuut I know a lot of people who have had QC issues with all the companies who make them and Ironman is solid 💪 right now they have an amazing 30% off sale w/ traction boards included for Black Friday
I was looking at them again last night and the price for the kit is still the same price it was last week so I’m not sure if they’re assuming people didn’t look before or what, but I think that’s the route I’m going to go! I appreciate the input!
We just did a similar thing, but didn't sell our JLUR ;-). We've never owned a Subi before, but ordered a white OBW that should be arriving in January sometime. The Jeep is my wife's DD, and she commutes a long distance, so we're really looking forward to the comfortable ride of the OBW, plus the ability to do well in the snow and basic off road situations. It will be nice to use the OBW for basic exploring of CO and Moab, but still have the option to do more hardcore trails with the JLUR. I look forward to following your Subi overlanding build!
@@roamingwithjosh --Oh, right on... that makes sense. I'm still on the fence -- not sure how long this gas price thing is going to last. Hopefully no more than the next four years... cheers!
I struggled with buying a Wrangler for 2 years and ended up buying a 2021 Jeep Ckerokee Trailhawk. I'm so glad I got the Cherokee Trailhawk. Like you said about the Subaru... It will travel 80 precent of the places I want to good and get 25mpg. Not to mention it's a far more comfortable ride , quiet inside and has all the luxury up grades.
I couldn’t agree more. If you’re not fully committed to a wrangler or gladiator and what they’re capable of then get something that’s more realistic for your travels. Thanks for the comment!
@@roamingwithjosh I'll admit it's far more exciting (to me) to see a Subaru conquer an obstacle than watching a Wrangler with 40 inch tires completing the Rubicon Trail. Is that not fully committed (to a Wrangler) or just more practical of me? Just curious... did you consider a Cherokee Trailhawk KL? The Grand Cherokee doesn't even have a locking dif like the smaller Cherokee or Subarus. Looking forward to many Subaru videos from ya. Lately I've noticed a few channels that once featured Subarus have switched to other makes. The Subaru / soft roading "market" is wide open. Please take advantage of it.
Dude, it’s crazy you say that because I’ve had that same conversation with my wife about the openness of the market. There’s so many jeep channels that you just get drowned out by other people and the Subaru stuff is getting so much more attention. I don’t think I could walk away from my gladiator, but I can foresee us slowly transitioning to what gets the most attention and has the eyeballs. We did not consider a smaller jeep only because I was dead set on this vehicle once I did my research and I love it so far.
There’s something to be said for a vehicle you use every day. Still get out a bit. Quiet. It’s not a 4x4. However. This car handles quite a bit. I own a outback .
I have 24,000 miles on my wilderness. I had an onxy before, the different rear end in wilderness makes huge difference, including reduced mpg. Btw_ we have a 19 ascent. Same motor, same tranny's, same rear end. Yet it's rated to tow 5,000 lbs. Only difference is ascent weighs 400 more pounds AND has slightly bigger tran cooler. If you hook obd reader to trans while driving to monitor temp, you can tow your limit easily and more. We have a 3,000 pound Coleman camper and when loaded it hits 3800 if really over loaded. Outback does great with it. If it's over 85F outside, 60mph or less is ideal, which you should be doing while towing anyway. Only difference is ascent has antisway program, and above 60mph on Windy Day that makes some difference.
In other countries some of the regular Outbacks without the turbo and bigger transmission are rated at 4000 lb. The $3,500 lb rating has something to do with America's NTSB standards
I have to admit I had high hopes for ,y Onyx XT. I added and Anderson fabrication lift, method wheels and toyo AT3. Started to do a really nice build. But… the constant electrical issues, abysmal CarPlay issues and the worst damn CVT transmission I sold or after 18k miles and got a 2021 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and could not be happier. Dual mode mode X mode for me also sucked in the NC mountains. It’s just not a true 4x4 no matter how cool you can make it look.
I totally agree. The CVT has many short comings and I think it’s only guys like us who push our rigs to their limit who will ever find out just how bad the issues can be. I have some plans that I want to work on to make this thing a real beast just to see how far it can go. Thanks for the input!
Yeah I know. But yeah I am a subaru guy and was debating on my 9th subaru being a wilderness or getting a manual 2 door jeep. And picked the wilderness because my dog already loved my Wrx wagon and my outback xt that was traded in for the wilderness. I really hope you get to see that the subaru community is just as amazing as the jeep community. I will be watching your content now that I found you.
stumbled upon your channel because I am in the exact same spot, thinking about switching from my '15 Rubicon Hard Rock to a Wilderness. The Jeep is getting a bit long in the tooth (105k miles), trade value Subaru is giving me is dang near absurd, so it makes sense. As a background, my wife had the Grand Cherokee Summit which was an awesome vehicle at first glance, but it was plagued by a plethora of goofy issues. Heck, we had to swap out the transmission at under 60k miles.... So it was an easy choice to go with something economical (comparatively) with most of the bells and whistles that GC offered (minus the heated steering wheel and 5.7L V8, of course :). And truthfully, I am looking at getting another Outback for myself because it checks most of the boxes. If Forrester Wilderness had the 2.4 Turbo in it, it would be a no-brainer, but I cannot deal with the anemic 2.5 they throw into it. So looks like Outback Wilderness it is. Thanks for the informative vid and your channel is great!
Looking forward to a different vehicle. Get the more comfortable day to day stuff, love my Defender but don’t use it as a daily these days as get 300 miles to a tank of fuel, my 5 series BMW gets 600 that’s a huge cost difference currently.
Well, in April of 2021 I bought a Crosstrek Sport! Being single the 14" shorter and about 500 lbs lighter made a differance for me. I litereally drove it from the dealership to the tire dealer where I swapped out the stock tires for a set of Toyo ATIII's, lifted it 2" and put a skid plate on the front. Been to Moab and Death Valley with it and tackled the same trails as my Ford Explorer with 33's and a locker. Just watch out on the windshields .. I'm on my 3rd since July of 2021 and it's already been repaired once.
That’s awesome to hear! The shorter wheel base definitely helps, and we’re excited to take this thing out west this month and see just what it’s capable of!
@@roamingwithjosh Just back from a Christmas trip to Omaha, NE from Tucson, AZ. I left Omaha at 02:00 in the morning and drove straight thru with a couple of nap stops. 1305 miles .. 27 mpg on average. I did put a roof rack on too. Also, I don't use the traction control till I need it .. find keeping momentum is the best for climbing.
A lifted, skidded, subie of any generation with a stick and all terrains better then any other option except the old 22re/tre yotas. True daily offroaders for back country living.

@@BrandonGipsonVids I ordered it mid November and just called Subaru of America last week and was told I might be taking delivery sometime in January. I still don’t have a VIN number yet. Subaru told me to call back after the new year and I might be able to get an exact date.
@@Smith_jeff thanks! Is there a way to order online or did you have to go through a dealer?
@@BrandonGipsonVids I just went to a dealership. Gerald Jones Subaru of Augusta. Very pleasant experience. I don’t know if there is a way to ordering online. I did not try.
I've owned my wilderness a.k.a. Groot for 8000 km now and I love it! I ceramic coated it which really makes it shine!
Right on!
I have a 22 Outback Wilderness how hard is it to put on the iron man lift kit
Not hard at all.
Thanks for taking the time to share the information.
Thank you for the comment! We hope to have the same experience.
It’s nice to have someone to follow that has another off-road vehicle and is playing with a Wilderness. We’ve had ours for 2 months now.
Let me know how it does, I’ll be interested to hear! Loving mine so far.
I picked up the same Wilderness last week. Best decision I ever made. It feels and drives safe. I dove wrangler Unlimited for many years and and a few Audi’s. This Outback is an amazing machine and offers all then versatility our family needs.
I’m in the same boat as you. I love the wilderness. Thanks for the comment!
Well your Jeep Wrangler won’t out live the Subaru that’s for sure. Nothing against domestic but I’ve learned my lesson from the past.

Right on! I’m a white vehicle man if you couldn’t tell, but I absolutely love the blue! Let me know when your video is up.
@@roamingwithjosh will do. Fair warning I'm not an expert on posting videos, I've posted few videos about my fish tanks as you can see on my channel using Samsung galaxy camera, nothing fancy like you do lol
I want to get one but I am struggling with deciding on color 😂
All-in-one type of car. Very practical, off-road capable, decent amount of cargo room, great in all-weather, easy to drive, good MPG compared to other overland vehicles.
All great points!
Great content. I have an OBW too. Where did you locate your 6-pin receiver for your hitch? Can you show me some pics? Mine is located so close to the hitch that I’m having trouble locking the hitch on
I used a bracket that came with my adapter and located it in the same spot as the 4 pin. I haven't ran a dedicated line for one yet.
This is a great video, but you should know the forester’s towing capacity is only 3000 lbs (500 less than the jeep) and the wrangler rubicon’s ground clearance is l0.8 ( 1.1” more than the forester wilderness )
Good choice. Had a Rubicon and then a Raptor. Happy with my Subaru Outback Wilderness.
I've had both of those as well and don't get me wrong, I miss my raptor dearly, but I don't miss the payment or the gas I was burning because I wanted to go fast! Thanks for the comment!
I just built/ordered my outback. Getting rid of my wrangler also.
Welcome to the club!
I just bought one and you make me like it more
Right on!
I get 19mpg in my manual Rubicon Gladiator. Steel bumper all options minus cold weather... no need where I am. That's in stock form with an added soft topper covering the bed.
That’s pretty good! We never got that MPG out of either jeep we have.
I bought one just like your ‘22 Outback Wilderness white exterior and plan get same Gold mag wheel

Just got lucky, our local dealer had a white one... Absolutely dig it and I've had just about everything... 5.9 0-60 was unexpected... Perfect for what I want.
Right on!
I have a 2023 Subaru wilderness I get 23.5 in the city and 27.5 on the highway and I run about 75 to 80 mph
Right on!
Right on brother. We are a Jeep and Suby family as well. 2021 Gladiator Rubicon diesel and 2019 Subaru Forester. Love them both for totally different reasons.
I’m glad there’s so many people out there that had the same idea on this. Thanks for you input!
Excellent explanation.
Thank you!
Knee-Jerk?
Hi. Where did you get your Wilderness model from ?
Subaru dealer
I have a OBW on order and I am very interested in how this vehicle evolves with your family. You picked up an extra subscriber just to keep tabs on your time with this vehicle.
I appreciate it! So far so good and I have a couple new videos coming out soon to give more insight on what we’ve done. Thanks again!
I enjoy my OBW for what it is and I try to keep in mind it’s limitations.
what's your current mpg with your jeep now? and also how much mpg do you think you would get after the lift and new tires with the Subaru?
Around 15mpg. I think I will get far more than 15mpg.
Two questions: 1. If you could only have one vehicle which one would it be? 2. Which one would you take overloading?
If I could only have 1 it would have to be our power wagon because of its interior space and towing capability. I would take the power wagon on overlanding trips because it’s a better all around vehicle with more capability than our Outback wilderness.
Did you consider the Grand Cherokee?
I did not. I wanted to step outside the jeep family and see what I could find.
That’s a fantastic point and I should have brought that up. Thanks for sharing!
The OBW with any adders will now be in the high 40’s. Most of that with a Dealers surcharge for low inventory!
That’s a shame!
Just picked up mine in White today! I think it looks awesome!
Right on and I agree!
I may have missed the answer to this, but when you said she needed to come up a bit, did you give it an actual lift? Or just bigger tires? I love the way yours sits.
We've only added larger tires up until this point, but we are looking at options to improve the suspension.
Everything he said in this video makes real world sense. Looking forward for the Subaru content.
Thank you!
Great points. 👍🙏
Thank you!
Got rid of my beloved FJ for an Autumn Green OBW. Loving is so far! Just made more sense for me at this point in my life, despite loving every second of my FJ.
I totally get it! The OBW is such a great vehicle for pretty much everything. Thanks for the comment!
My Wilderness arrived 3 weeks ago and I'm thrilled with it. I don't do a lot of off-roading but what little I do, I'm sure this Subie will handle it. Comfort, value and economy was what sold me.
I couldn’t agree more. We are loving this rig so far!
No knee jerk reaction here. I am researching this vehicle now for the exact same thing you guys are using it for.
Hope the videos are helpful for you decision making process!
@@buddywilliams9594 Wow! That's lot of useful tips & information! Thanks a lot!! I can't wait anymore for my car to arrive next week :-)
After a week I am also at 23.8 MPG with my 22 Subaru Outback Wilderness
Right on!
Super excited to see the build. My Wilderness has been on order for a few months, I can't wait to get my hands on it.
Awesome! You’re going to love it! New video coming next Tuesday with all the upgrades and overland gear I’ve added.
I love it! I’m ready for some snow to get this thing out and see how it does. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment and awesome stories about the crosstrek!
I traded my 2014 Jeep Patriot 4x4, for a 2021 Subaru Outback. The Jeep was giving me fits and costing MORE money. Love my Subaru Outback.
We love ours too! Thanks for the comment!
Lol
My vehicles are my everyday primary vehicles, that I travel to work for as well pleasure. So I was doing alot of digging around to figure what is the next best step to be.
I should be hearing from the dealership any day now, that I will be able to pick it up. So hopefully soon & hopefully be able to enjoy my new ride.
Best wishes to you & your family in your new vehicle.
Thank you very much and congrats on the OBW!
Cool. I’m buying a 2005 OB XT manual

We sold Subaru Forester XT, and bought Jeep Wranglers for eveyday use. We have JK and JLU. Never come back to Subaru.
I completely understand why you would do that. I'm on the fence myself.
Agreed, dude! Thanks for the input!
Appreciate the kind words and thoughtful comment! Thank you!
Great all around choice. The Ironman suspension is a great upgrade man 👏 excited to see where this takes y’all.
I was looking at that recently. Thanks, dude!
@@roamingwithjosh I have them after a year of spacers and man!! They’re solid.
That’s the perfect mix of vehicles if you ask me. Thanks for the comment and the info!
Would it keep speed on Highway uphill?
The jeep?
Curious what you were referring to regarding the Ford Bronco? I don't know squat about the Bronco, but I like it.
The wait time on broncos is infinite so this was the next best option for us.
@@roamingwithjosh --Oh, right on... that makes sense. I'm still on the fence -- not sure how long this gas price thing is going to last. Hopefully no more than the next four years... cheers!

Very good move.
Great car, I’ve got the onyx and it’s a great adventure vehicle
Do you have a tent n yours or do you sleep in the OB?
Interesting, we just sold our 4 door wrangler unlimited and bought an outback wilderness for the exact same reasons.
Well then you can definitely identify with the reasoning. Thanks for the comment and congrats on the new wheels!
We bought one. We love it.
Right on!
Do you have any idea how to change weather app to your home town and how do I get rid of all the phone numbers on the phone app
Not a single clue
CVT's are a no starter for me. Too much engine noise at freeway speed. Needs a ZF-9 speed, after all it's 2022.
Thanks for the comment!
1.3in difference
There’s something to be said for a vehicle you use every day. Still get out a bit. Quiet. It’s not a 4x4. However. This car handles quite a bit. I own a outback .
I agree. We really do love this vehicle so far!
I like jeeps, but the Outback fits my daily needs, it rides a lot been than the jeep
I totally agree!
Great vid, you covered all the reasons why the Wildly fills a gap in the market.
I agree! Thank you!
That’s really awesome info and I appreciate the input!
In other countries some of the regular Outbacks without the turbo and bigger transmission are rated at 4000 lb. The $3,500 lb rating has something to do with America's NTSB standards
I'm debating wether to get it in blue or white... Both colors look great.
Both are great choices!
any update on the lift kit? would love to see
It’s ordered, just waiting for it to arrive. I’ll post a video here and pics on Instagram when I get it done. Thanks!
Traded in a 2019 4Runner Limited for this. No regrets. Love my Outback Wilderness.
Likewise! Such a great vehicle.
Love it!
Switched from jeep to Subaru automatically got me to subscribe
😂😂 to be fair, I still have a gladiator, but I’m glad you came along!
Awesome stuff! Glad the info was helpful and we appreciate the kind words!
Love the combo.....we have a 2021 jeep Renegade Trailhawk and a 2020 Subaru Forester Sport.
Awesome set of rigs!
Man in CA the Wilderness was going for 42k MSRP with a 14999 chip shortage fee 🤣🤣
Classic California!
Looking forward to a different vehicle. Get the more comfortable day to day stuff, love my Defender but don’t use it as a daily these days as get 300 miles to a tank of fuel, my 5 series BMW gets 600 that’s a huge cost difference currently.
And that’s my school of thought. Thanks for the input and support!
Knee jerk reaction, you have lost your mind and have become practical loll With kids the Sub is actually a great vehicle
😂😂 you had me for a second, that was good.
@@sonny1597 That's awesome on the MPG! We are headed your way on the 15th to find some warmer weather and camping. Appreciate the input!
A lifted, skidded, subie of any generation with a stick and all terrains better then any other option except the old 22re/tre yotas. True daily offroaders for back country living.
Agreed!
I can respect this.
Appreciate you!
Knee-jerk reaction: CVT!
so you sold her rubicon, kept your gladiator and got her the subaru. Is that right?
That is correct. Thoughts on the gladiator/subaru combo?
