1800kms to the Arctic Ocean on Canada's Most DANGEROUS Highway
Вставка

- To go all the way from the top to the bottom means first you must go to the top. In our case, the top is Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories and the bottom is Ushuaia, Argentina. The final leg of our journey north is the Dempster Highway, an 890km gravel road from Dawson City to "Tuk" on the Arctic Ocean. Some consider this the most dangerous and remote highway in all of North America, but it also happens to be one of the most scenic. We're taking our time driving up and back down the Dempster in 13 days.

I've watched many videos on the Dempster Highway. Your video, by far, is the best cinematic I have ever watched. Thank you.
Yeasss. Thanks so much this comment, it’s much appreciated. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Happy Birthday Alex!! And to think you spent many, many hours editing to gift us with this masterpiece. Thank you 🙏
Thanks Robin, and yes, yes I did, but it was my pleasure. Thank you for watching and enjoying the video.😊😊
Stunning video and awesome narration. Can’t wait to follow you two on your long journey south. ☮️
Thanks Sally! Stoked to bring you along!😊😊
Sentiments by me as well...not to mention the music!!!
Haha, thanks Bruce! I'm REALLY glad you're enjoying the music, honestly, it's sometimes the hardest part.
Looking forward to this episode.. we went to Tuk in late July this year 2024 with our Truck and Ember trailer.. Can you comment on how you found the solar power generation... we found that the further we travelled north the solar generation degraded, by the time we got to Tuk, compared to Alberta we were generating 50% of the power. BTW we are suffering from North fever, now we are back in our normal life.
I think you’ll love this film if you’re struggling with North fever right now. Solar generation didn’t seem to be affected too much, although, that being said we were driving enough to not have to worry about it.
@@SlowRoamers We are already talking about returning to the Yukon and NWT next year.. We will be adding a DCDC charger to our charging system over the winter…
Good plan on both fronts!
@@SlowRoamers what an epic episode, Yukon and NWT are incredible.. looking forward to watching you travels south... we met several people heading south on the Pan American...
Hey Nick! So glad you enjoyed it. We’re thrilled to share our travels as we head south, glad to have you along for the ride. You’re gonna love this weekend’s episode. See you then!
Whew! This one took me a couple of days. I appreciate the time you take to let the earth speak for itself with a shot of a leaf in the breeze, or water moving in a river. We can feel you mean it when you say you are, “…infinitely blessed to wander upon it.” That being said, I agree nature seemed to know that your “sacrifice to metal” was not for her. I thought it was for Betty’s metal. Some non-Canadian lyrics in your music choices this time. Good to see you branching out. With such vastness those drone shots are everything, keep them coming! I have to say I wasn’t originally a fan of Betty’s yellow color, but now I see you chose it to match both your beanies and the colors of the changing leaves. Very clever of you! I loved the way Meg whispered the word “cheese” when speaking of her cheese pockets. It’s like she has such a special secret! Finally, I don’t know how you get a better birthday cake than Saper(?) Hill! The violins matched it perfectly. Fantastic! Another beautiful video. Thanks for taking us along!
Yeah, it’s a long one, but the Dempster is deserving of a looong form video. It does seem like rain has been chasing us everywhere and we can’t seem to escape it. I don’t think I could even come close to showing an area in a fitting way without the drone, it’s such an invaluable tool. I think cheese is a sacred food, so it requires a silent respect.🤣 Sapper “Hill” was such a good birthday hike, oh my goodness, it was sooo good. Thanks for watching you two, safe travels!✌🏼
Pa J wants to meet you two! I love your comments. So heartfelt. Kindred to my own thoughts. Thanks for being such encouragers. Everyone needs words that lift.
This video is amazing guys were enjoying every moment guys becafuel out there 😊
Thanks so much Christian! Say hi to the fam!
Marvelous! In those latitudes, the lights are up 300 nights per year. The trouble is: "Land of the Midnight Sun". I would go out on winter nights to a dip between hills near our construction camp to watch to the Aurora Borealis. The hills screened the light from our camp. I parked my truck just behind the hilltop so I wouldn't see the 4 way flashers. I would lie down on the road and I didn't want someone to run over me. I lay down because the lights washing across the sky would overwhelm my balance and make me stagger. I always watched alone. No distractions!
That would be soooo cool! One day we’ll be up there in the winter
@@SlowRoamers I hope you can make it happen. It's tough to find the right adjective... Majestic is close.
It’ll happen, just in time. 😊
Your videos are beautifully shot, very professional. Thank you.
Thank you so much, we really appreciate it. Thanks for watching!
Ps IF....( and thats a Big sarcasm for me....IF (not a chance anyone would stop viewing) NOT in my eyes!! IF you made it to the END....( we are the lucky ones that get to see it to the end.....most dont want it to END!! Cheers, Bruce
This is epic long but, beautiful loneliness there 🌞.
Thanks for the effort and..
👍 Rock on 🙂.
Thaaaaanks!😊
What an epic journey both of you are on. It’s my dream to do take the same trip one day soon. I really enjoy the cinematography in your videos. Well done. I can’t wait to see what amazing things you do and experience on your way to Ushuaia.
Thanks for watching, Rick! I think there will be some pretty epic experiences to share with you as we head down. Starting with next weeks video...;)
I noticed your tattoo on your left wrist. For others who don’t know the language and the meaning, it’s Sanskrit language and the tattoos translate to PRANA which means “Life Air”. It is this air when it leaves the body we call the person dead. Great video and narration.
Good eye! Meg is a trained yoga instructor, she doesn’t teach currently, but that’s the significance :) Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the film.
Thank you so much for that stunning piece of classical that played with the top of the world scenery. My heart is full. I did see your BD celebratory bag of Doritos. That and a can of DC would make me glad!!!!
I thought you might like that part. Glad you enjoyed it. There were no doritos in this van though...
Epic, outstanding, inspirational, I have lived in Alaska for over 50 years and this video has inspired us to drive the Dempster, hope our paths cross this winter!!! Alex your one lucky guy to have an onboard gourmet chief with you, happy birthday dude!
Heck yes! DO IT! So glad you liked it and that it’s inspired you to drive the Dempster. You’re gonna love it. I sure hope we get to see you both before we cross into Mexico! Safe travels me friend.
Very liked vlogue specially the simplicity of both of you and selection of places your driving skills makes toughest roads look easy very energetic, enjoyable vlogue my best wishes to both of you for your coming days ahead ❤❤😊.
Thank you so much Ratnadip!😁🙌🏻
Poetic in so many ways! The photography is amazing! Great music selections. A vicarious experience. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
😊😊thanks so much, we’re so glad you enjoyed it.
Canned fish (conservas) can be absolutely great. I have 15 different kinds, 50 or more cans in my pantry. Explore!
Sometimes though…sometimes it’s not. 🤣
@@SlowRoamers Go with Portugese and Spanish products packed in oil.
Duly noted! Thanks for the advice 😊
Ice roads expedition 2027 let's go!! Did you fall for the arctic too now? like I did from watching Jim Baird and Buck? So many great shots in this! I can see the love. 500 CAD is really not bad these days unfortunately. Try Northern Ontario, 200 km to the vet, 120 km to groceries... I'm heading up from Nova Scotia for the month of October, I'll be out at least 1000. Someone's gotta do something about the price of gas, I mean we can make our own in Canada, it shouldn't cost this much ffs.
😬😬 it was actually something like $800, I forgot to mention the actual total at the end. But I totally agree, Canada could be refining its own fuel which would create so many jobs and strengthen then nation….BUT, multinationals got to that early in the game and they’re dug in now. It’s just the way of things. We’ve actually seen as low as 1.56/L in eastern BC on our way down which isn’t horrible.
I think one day we’ll go up there in the winter just to say we’ve done it. Seems like it would be quite the adventure, but whatever I build for that will need to be INSULATED. Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed!😁
I love your video's, and will continue to watch. However, I hate the "upcoming" notifications. I want to be notified that a new video is available to watch not that one is "upcoming" in three, five or whatever days. It's like being a kid at Christmas running into the living room to see what Santa left you for presents and then being told you have to wait till the family comes over to open them, much later in the day. 🤨
We don’t often do Premiere’s, this Saturdays video is the start of the official Pan American series and our first feature length film. The premiere feature helps it get a little traction before it releases. Otherwise, you can always expect to see our videos release at 9am on Saturday morning. Thanks for watching, see you Saturday!
@@SlowRoamers It was worth the wait. Thanks for sharing, the scenery was amazing. Happy Birthday Alex. 🍻
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 👊🏼
Postpone Desserts are the BEST......because we get to see it on the next beautiful video (WELL DESERVED I MIGHT ADD) and almost lost it when I saw the price of gas you paid on the Demptster....(OMG)... Thank you again for NEVER EVER dissapointing your community and myself!! Cheers, birthdays wishes , 1000 islands Canada....ps I watched this twice!!
TWICE?! Wow, thanks Bruce! The wait will be worth it, Meg made a MOST EXCELLENT birthday dessert. See you next weekend!
A masterpiece! The metal gods are looking down on the both of you as you make your way south. You guys will do great things along your journey. See you in two years lol ❤
Thaaaaanks friends. It’s really too bad we won’t see you guys again before we leave, but it was so good spending time with you. Safe travels, give Diesel a pat for us.
Fitz Roy like?? Oh my!! Big claim but Alaska is so big I’d assume it could be true. Liked the straight down aerial shots on trees. Also stellar job on the air down, all tires exactly dialed in the slush 👌
Probably not QUITE as epic, but they certainly hold a likeness. We spotted them on the way south for a brief moment and they’re super cool peaks. Glad you enjoyed the film, thanks for watching!🙌🏻
Awesome, we drove to Inuvik in 97 in a rental jeep, we destroyed five tyres..sooo many trees.
Very easy to watch, thanks for the notalgia.
Radical! Last I was there was in 2017, a few months before the road to Tuk opened. They must have made a lot of improvements on the road since 97. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Magnificent job. Your photography skills and drone piloting are epic.
Thank you so much!😁😊
Did I wave at the Slow Roamers from a white Chev Express extended passenger van south of Tumbler Ridge today?? Hope the sun came out by the time your hike started! We had to keep our little ones moving fast, lest the icebergs get us…
You most certainly did! Sorry I didn't wave back, I have a slow response time with that kind of thing. Unfortunately the weather did not leave, but we still had a great time.
Amazing trip, we did the Dempster two years ago in September it was Great the Fall colours and no Bugs. We made it to the Arctic Ocean we were going to go for a swim but we realized we forgot our bathing suits at home we did not want to scare the locals by skinny dipping so we just put our feet in the ocean Oh While next time. Have a safe trip.
Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it! That water was QUITE cold and the weather didn’t suit a cold dip, but it was a great experience nonetheless. We too feel as though that trip won’t be the last.
Yes, I made it this far and you’re welcome 😂
Seriously though, this was a great video and I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you 😊
Awesome! Thanks so much for watching, Alan. Were stoked you enjoyed it. There’s plenty more coming, so stay tuned!
Can't wait guys 😊😊
You’re gonna love it😁
Me and my family are excited 😊 guys
OMG! What great scenery for a birthday Alex.. Happy Birthday! The scenery as always was spectacular, BUT with an edge for the fall foliage.Meg: Your meals when you're running low on food look 100% better than mine when the kitchen is full. Simply amazing...
Thanks Jackie! I can confirm, the meals remain delicious regardless how well the fridge is stocked. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Bravo! Well done. Wow. Knocked this one outta the park! Tuk has always been on the list, might have to notch it up the list after this!
Thanks Nathen! It’s definitely a great trip, well worth the drive!
Hey Meg & Alex,
What a fantastic film. I truly loved watching it.
I'm fairly new here. I subscribed after seeing you on Foresty and Loui's channels.
Meg, I would buy a recipe book filled with your creative creations on the road! I'd love to know, for one, what you include in your salmon rice bowls.
What an epic journey you are both about to make, all the way south. Good on you, guys. I look forward to experiencing it vicariously through you and following your adventures.
All good wishes from Scotland, UK.
Rachel
Hi Rachel! Thanks so much for watching our film, we’re so glad you enjoyed it. We have certainly had a lot of requests for a cookbook and it will likely come one day. Our goal is to be able to eventually quit our part time jobs and focus completely on film making, at this point we hope to have some more time to create the cookbook.
Looking forward to bringing you along with us on the ride!
Alex & Meg
Hey Rachel, Pa J here. I'm Alex's dad. I grew up in Scotland (Ayrshire) so it's great to see you tuning in from the homeland. Welcome! I'm on your side about the cookbook and have actually been encouraging Meg in that regard. I'll stay after it and will be ready to help when the time comes.
@alistairjackson7658 Hello from Edinburgh, Alex's Dad 👋. You must be proud of the pair of them. I particularly loved the latest video and look forward to more of their film making.
@@WordNerd1971 oh, fantastic! Most of my family is in Edinburgh .. Rosewell, Livingston. If you haven't seen it, you'll want to watch Alex's "Abandoned and Discarded History in BC's No Man's Land" published July 27th. About 3 minutes, you'll know why. 😀 It's about the music. P.S. I too am a word nerd! Subtitles seem to be my specialty these days. 😂

Alright ...NOW I can watch
😁🙌🏻🙌🏻 how’d you like it?
@@SlowRoamers wonderful. We are adventurous sorts and we will be travelling more once our 3rd son is out of the house. Not much more technical climbing, but certainly rambling and hiking. I flag many "locals" that you and others travel for future reference. Thanks for you efforts. Safe travels. I have numerous vans , both cutaways, wheelchairs , 2x and 4x. I have driven all across US Canada and Mexico. My current "want" is 2-3 weeks on the Tiaga Road. Paddling, shed hunti.g , enduro riding from our van.
Epic, another awesome video👍🤘
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Happy Birthday Alex! I hope you enjoyed your next dessert! LOL. Thanks for sharing the Dempster with us, beautiful. Tuk was also a highlight - I really liked it and I love that their pace is different than ours!
Thanks so much! Tuk was really special, I think it’s really underrated, honestly. We’d have stayed longer, but budget, timing and cold usually drive us from a place. 🤷🏼♂️ Next time I guess.
@@SlowRoamers And food rationing… Glad you had some time there at least

There's an old saying when traveling in that part of the world, "Never pass gas." Super, supersized episode! You always have me looking for the next installment. Thank you. Plus 17.6k+ subs. How about that?
Hahaha, y’know, I had that saying in my head and I ignored it. Pride? Stupidity? A combination? Not entirely sure, but I won’t be doing that again. I think I may have killed our fuel pump in the process as well.
We’re still climbing which is encouragingly to see. You’re gonna love this weekends video. See you then!
Awesome vid folks. It’s gonna be a long ride ❤ the cinematic shots and editing
Thanks so much, glad you liked it! 😊✌🏼
I don't usually comment on videos...but thank you!! What an amazing adventure and beautiful filming/editing. 🤘🤘
Well I’m stoked we made a video that evoked a need to leave a nice comment! Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it.😁
My wife and I have been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now and have enjoyed them. There's quite a few content creators doing these van life videos and Alaska/Yukon/BC seems to be popular. We live in BC and I'd love to do something like this some day before I'm too old 😂. Of the lot putting out this content you are some of our favorites. Great narration and introspective on the world around you, and drone shots are great and have really transformed what's possible for viewing the environment. We will continue to live vicariously through you on your adventures, looking forward to more! Keep on keeping on, friends.
Thanks so much, glad we’re ranking high!😁 Thanks for watching and joining along on our adventures. You should most definitely make the trip when you get the chance.
Wow, your videos are beautiful. Thank you for showing me parts if the work that I am very unlikely to ever be able to visit. Happy Birthday Alex. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Hi Helen, it’s our pleasure to bring you along. Thanks so much for watching and following along, we’ve got a lot of the earths beauty coming to a screen near you. 😊
Hey Alex! hey Meg! Thanks for the longer runtime film this week. Enjoyed basking in the trip with you guys. Also- this film has given me the best idea of what it's like up there. Seems like some travelers blast through it just to bag the video. Happy birthday + congrats on the start of something great.
Hey Mark, so glad you enjoyed the video. I thought the same and wanted to really showcase the scenery that you drive through on the Dempster. Thanks so much for watching!
When you finish your journey to Argentina, please write a book. It would be awesome to read how you stayed sane and how you kept each other motivated. Flying to a destination for a one or two week trip can be taxing. I can't imagine making the trip from the top of of the world to the bottom, on four wheels. You two are wonderful, brave, inspiring and insightful. Thanks for sharing your journey.
😊😊 Perhaps we will, although we’ll be creating an entire video series…so there’s that. 🤣 Thanks so much for watching, stoked to have you along for the ride.
The most dangerous 😆. Invest in good tires. And youre fine. I drove it last year in my ford escape. Loved the drive!!!! And plan on doing It again for my 50th. Enjoy.

What's dangerous about that highway?
As I stated in the first 3 minutes of the film, “the Dempster Highway is not inherently dangerous. There are no steep grades, shelf roads or scary obstacles. The danger lies in its remoteness, ever and rapidly changing weather conditions and varied surface quality.” Cheers and thanks for watching!🙌🏻
Slow Roamers The Movie 🍿 🎥 👍🏼😂
Haha, yes indeed!
Loved it, I have been to the bridge at the beginning of the Dempster but never crossed that bridge, instead went to Dawson city then Top of the World highway and all the way to Prudhoe Bay on my motorcycle. I swore I would return and do the Dempster. Well, after seeing all your videos I'm now on the market for a Chevy Express but I want the extended wheelbase with the 4.8 but I'm only finding it with the 6L V8. I plan on going next year with my wife. Oh, Happy Birthday 🥂🍾
Whew! Thats fantastic! We wish you all the luck in finding THE van. You’ll enjoy the comforts gained after doing road life on a moto. Thanks for watching!🙌🏻
@@SlowRoamers BTW, I also rode my motorcycle from NJ all the way to Ushuaia in 2018, you guys are going to love South America
Radical! 🤘🏼 Yeah, we’re so stoked to get to South America!
LOL, that word you are thinking of is lutefisk. Even I won't eat it and I'm Norwegian. That was a really pretty trip, only been up the Dempster a little bit. I borrowed a turbo Neon in Dawson and drove it up there as far as it would go on half a tank after I filled it up at the corner. Which turned out to be quite a ways. Cheers, and safe travels to the land of fire. And HPBD!
Nor will I ever try it!🤣 A turbo neon eh? Dang, that sounds like it may have been fun. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the film!🙌🏻
@@SlowRoamers LOL, yeah. Little rocket. Spool up the turbo it sounds like an enraged sewing machine. Goes like snot though. Good summer car, low profiles go flat at 40 below.

Most dangerous? SMH
Thanks for watching!
Just did this trip. I wish I had 13 days to do this. In 3 days I feel like I only got the coles note summary. Definitely going back.
Bruh, you got the first letter of every second word…Dayum, you must have been HAULING A$$ to do the Dempster in 3 DAYS!!! Well, at least you did it, and there’s always next time. Thanks for watching!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
@SlowRoamers yeah, we packed a bunch of stuff into a two week trip to see where we wanted to go back and spend time. Dempsters, top of world hwy, denali, Alaskan hwy over to liard hot springs and then down to fort saint John, back through whistler area and home. Yukon was a stand out for us.
Well, that’s makes sense. The first time I went to the north I drove from Edmonton, AB all the way up to Deadhorse and back in 2.5 weeks. It was like 11,000+kms. Did nothing but drive for the entire time, BUT, I did find some spots I wanted to return to. It’s always good to dip your toe in.
🎸🤘
Nothing against onX maps, we can't use it in eastern Canada as there is little to no data compared to their competitors
Yeah, that’s why we’re mapping. Not much out this way either.
