Couple things. 1) instead of the par boil, ive had success microwaving a full plate of shredded potatoes for 3 min. This not only par cooks it but it reduces moisture in them setting up a nice crunch when finished in the pan. 2) potatoes can take a lot more seasoning than salt and pepper. I like oregano, garlic and onion powder and sometimes cayanne. 3) i like my hash browns crunchy. Id recommend 7min per side and one flip.
Awesome, thanks for sharing. I love the microwave but to this very day, with over 500 video recipes shared here on UA-cam, I haven't once used the microwave in any of them because it's kind of a no-brainer. It doesn't take any skill to use one, most anyone, if not everyone, already knows how to use it and what they can use it for. But you are right and that is a great idea. Thank you
Great tip about getting rid of excess starch. I peel and boil the whole potato, then cool it down a bit, then let it get cold in the refrigerator over night. (Usually enough for 2-3 days) Next I shred enough for the size portion of hash browns I want and fry till golden brown. I’ve found that putting a few pats of butter on top of the potatoes and letting it melt through gives that extra boost to get the potatoes golden brown. I cook them Low and Slow and it takes around 20-25 minutes to get the results I like. I also like to spice them up a bit with powdered garlic, onion powder, and a good sprinkle of red pepper flakes. Top them off with a big ladle of spicy homemade sausage gravy and I’m ready to enjoy. Thanks for all of your great recipes and the extra effort you put into the editing. That effort makes your instructional videos a pleasure to watch as well as your wonderful announcer type voice. Well done!!!
Yeah that's another great way to make them, boiled or baked even. It's a concept I want to film and show in another video because potato shreds that have been cooked, all the way through, can be frozen. And I'd like to show everyone, who doesn't already know, how to make Frozen Shredded Hash Browns. Thanks for your comment, Tim.
Have been using a salad spinner for decades to pull the water out, instantly!. For my home cut fries and hand grate hash. As I hand grate, I am grating into a bowl of cold water. A big serving bowl, like a thanksgiving serving bowl. Gotta have my hash cooked somewhat crispy, but not all thru Cant stand raw hash or lumpy mashed.
Well, I have learned a lot about hash browns, that is for sure. I confess, mine have always come out of a bag from the market. The real thing is definitely worth doing. The only change I'd make is to cook those a little more to a "crispy" stage. GREAT!
The "Par-Boil" is important because it helps to cook the potato all the way through. An alternative to this recipe is grating already baked or boiled, and refrigerated, potatoes. Those potato shreds can be frozen too.
So do I need to blanche the hashbrowns before I place them in the oven. I have potatoes I want to use up and want to make a breakfast casserole? But not sure if they will cook thoroughly. Thank u so much in advance.
No, but that's a great idea. I did just buy a new mop and bucket with the salad spinner idea attached to it, though. It works great to ring out the water on that thing. 😂 🍻
Absolutely. She also found my Kitchen aid mixer, second hand, $90! You'll probably remember I mentioned something about it in my American Greek Gyro video.

Being a chef I love watching videos like this so relaxing and watching other ways people make hash browns
In that case, you better check out my "Killer Hash Browns" video or maybe even my "Corned Beef Hash", if you're into breakfast potato recipes. 😂🍻

Yeah, cook them how you want. I like them both ways.
With prices going up, I re-thinking buying expensive hashbrowns from a bag to just taking time to do it myself from a potatoe.
I truly learned something on this video. I did not know about the "HARD BOILED"....
I can't wait to give this a try....
Stanley Willis me too. Can’t wait to try.

I am so glad you explained why it is best to leave the skin on the potatoes!
If it's not mentioned in my videos I usually include more information in the blog post.
wow, you explained to me exactly how I can make my own hash browns, thank you sir.
That's what I'm here for! 🍻
The best narrator I have ever heard, except Morgan Freeman. Thanks for the instruction.
Thanks, 🙏 that's what I hear! 😝🍻

Great and simply taught!
Thanks👍👍👍👍👌👌👌
Gotta love a good Hash Brown!
After par boiling the shredded potatoes, have you ever tried to use a salad spinner to help remove water from the potatoes before cooking them?
No, but that's a great idea. I did just buy a new mop and bucket with the salad spinner idea attached to it, though. It works great to ring out the water on that thing. 😂 🍻
Awesome technique i will give this a try God Bless your dear wife so sweet to receive a gift for the kitchen kuddos to you!!!!👍🙌🙌😄

Good job Sir !
Mmm, Hash Browns!!!
How could you make it so you can freeze them?
You have to bake your potatoes, just like making a baked potato. Then shred, bag and freeze!
You should try with little bit of syrup
😲
perfect!
The BEST!
