DeLancey sat silently for most of the time, but when he finally opened his mouth, boy, was it worth the wait.
I wanted to hear more from him and LeVar, but SOMEONE kept talking
Oh yeah... finding out that the majority of the Next Generation cast and STNG Con-fandom are proud politically-intolerant hypocrites was worth its weight in gold.
I'm the last 10 minutes or so, we finally heard from John! I wish we heard more from him and LeVar too, what Patrick said in the last 2 minutes was a bloody great point!
The Q episodes were some of the most interesting!
Marina out of character is just her drunk character from First Contact
She even admitted it. Right around 21:00
I used to think she was hot, now I see she's insufferable
Hahaha
Marina does have some interesting things to say BUT she needs to let others have their time too!! A really good example is the last 10-15 minutes, After John de Lancie was able to share his thoughts. Marina went on for waay to long and was talking over Gates!
I like all of them, but Marina you need to take a step back sometimes!!
I wish John received more questions, he's such an amazing actor!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I know I'll never be able to go to one of this cons. but im so happy i get to see the panels.
Well that exchange between Marina and Gates was AWKWARD!
Man, the last question: I just wanted to hear from the actual teacher on stage: Gates!
Heather is the real MVP!
Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this. I'm on the other side of the world, so couldn't be there. This was wonderful.
Seeing stuff like this is one of the best things about UA-cam.
There have been rumors for years that Gates and Marina have something of a tense relationship. Ronald D. Moore sort of commented on it in the TNG blu-rays referring to punishing Marina and Gates for fighting by making them do aerobic scenes together.
Thanks for this video. Great to see this panel, didn't get to go that day so glad I you uploaded this panel. Thanks!
I just want to say I absolutely love Brent Spiner. He is such a gentleman and everyone I've talked to who's met him has said that he's really nice. :) Plus he has a stellar singing voice and he's very handsome as well. ^.^
Brent wrote this ☝🏻
Thanks for posting this so nice for those of us who could not be there to see it !
Great video, so nice of you to upload this for everybody to see! I'm a huge ST fan, but I have to say I'll never understand why fans continue to believe that the actors themselves do (and should) know the names of every episode, remember exactly what they were doing in particular scene, etc. How many times do they have to say they don't remember, but thank you? The most fruitful questions, I think, get at who the actors are and how/why they do what they do, peppered with some funny anecdotes. Patrick Stewart said it best: This was 30 years ago, and they aren't able to analyze things at the level of the fandom, let alone answer the (nerdy) questions we have. When Gates McFadden lets her true feelings come out, when Marina Sirtis is brutally honest, it's sad to hear the air rush out of the room. You have them there, so why not get some "real" information?
As before Heather, I can NOT thank you enough for these video's! And like last year - I was unable to attend this year in LV - Huge disappointment for me, but like I said before to you - Thanks to YOUR efforts I get to sample some of the very best parts of the convention and in some small way get to feel like I was there. I can not thank you enough. THANK YOU FROM THE VERY BOTTOM OF MY HEART. I will thumbs up the each video (like last time) as I watch them.
Awwwww
thanks for the video Heather! Never got to go to a convention for all my years of watching. None in my country. Someday I'll really plan to attend one of these way ahead of schedule.
AWESOME! Thank you for uploading! Love them!
That question to Michael Dorn about how comfortable he was swapping casts from TNG to DS9 was an excellent question.
Thank you SO MUCH for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+REP!!!!
Awesome; a real sense of who they are and the teasing (sometimes on the hose) and friendship between them. Thanks for letting us see!
Heather! You come through again at STLV with great videos. You're the best.
Thank you Heather!
Thank you for the heart. I grew up watching the show --may sound silly but I love those people. I have never been to an event so glad you have shared. I did not know they did this kind of event. Thank you again
Thanks for putting this up! I love these guys.
Thank you so much!
Everytime I see Patrick Stewart it just puts a smile on my face. When I was a kid I looked up to the Picard character on Star trek almost like a TV father figure. I have so much love and respect for that man. I wished they could give us one more Star Trek movie with captain Picard.
He would make a great President for you Americans! You need someone like him!
He said in a recent TV interview that he would only bring Picard back if it was for a really good reason, otherwise he wouldn't do it. Patrick loves talking about his character and he loved playing Picard for all those years, despite the punishing 16 hour days. I have a renewed respect for him.
I think he is being very selfish. People have been asking for 15 years for a film and he refuses. Yet, he just did the X-Men Logan which was a great homage to Dr. Xavier! I think there could be a good script written and they could make a film before the TNG cast begins to transcend! Or simply make a film with all the cast! That would also please the fans.
@fredrika27 which he probably did due to his friend hugh jackman appearing in that as a bow out for his much loved character.
Stumbled across this, and was really impressed by the depth and intelligence of many of the cast's answers to questions. A nice treat!
Patrick Stewart is a British actor playing a French Starfleet captain that speaks English how crazy is that he never truely had a French accent
You know...
An obscure language called "French" - how could that be his main accent...
Thank you for the upload.
thank you for the upload
So glad you got this on video. I've never been able to make it to a Star Trek Panel. Would so love to go.
Thanks, Heather. It's too bad I am overseas currently and missed this event. Hopefully, I could visit one in person someday. Always enjoyed how funny the TNG cast is at these things. Voyager would follow next, and then DS9. Live long and prosper.
Maybe re-tile this The Marina Sirtis Panel with some of the TNG cast
Daniel Cox hahahaha
Patrick Stewart is my all time favorite star trek actor.
Thank you for posting this! I was at the panel too but not in a good enough spot for a decent video to share with friends who could not come to STLV this year :)
What a Star! Thank you :)
Thanks for all the videos ur awesome sauce
Marina was very gracious at recent SF Convention where she talked to me and my wife for about 5 minutes while i got her autograph. We thought Marina was hilarious up on stage. So was Jonathon Frakes. Very nice people the Star Trek cast.
thank you!
Thank you.
I like marina but sometimes the whole "i say whatever i want and it makes me endearing" gets old as fuck. It was super rude to tell Patrick Stewart he's getting old....sorry but that's just a bit nasty. Somebody should tell marina she's looking too old to be cute being so horrible. I imagine she'd get super annoyed.
VideogameGuitarist They've been making "old" jokes towards Stewart for years, same with bald jokes, it's just teasing that he doesn't mind. I think like the others, he just looks irritated by her hyperactivity in the context of a large panel where one person shouldn't be doing half of all the talking, lol, but it'd be strange for him to all of a sudden be offended by "old" jokes now.
It's typical English humor.
Pfft okay guy.
She is a bit of an attention freak but who are you to tell someone how they should act because of their age. I've come to understand that those that do this are pretty judgemental pricks. Not satsified with their own lives. It's one thing to be angry because someone hurts others (cheater, liar, thief, murderer, racist, etc) but because they don't act as mature? Get the F out of here guy. No one likes ppl like you.
The way they throw teases and soft (and not so soft) insults at each other is exactly like an actual family acts. Patrick sounded really old in this :( but then again, he just turned 77 in July. Shatner is 86!
Overall, everyone sounded great and happy. I hope they are all rich, because they deserve it. And that goes for everyone associated with all of the Star Treks: Actors, Writers, Producers, FX, Sound, Music. Heck even the caterers!
The question that set Gates and Marina at each other was not in the spirit of the panel. "I'm a professor and there for I have this analytical question for you..." Also, ditching the moderator would have been great but all it did was replace one moderator with another. I think Frakes would have made the panel more cohesive. His absence was painfully missing. Sir Patrick apologizing at the end was decent but not necessary. I think Patrick's interpretation of what the panel should have been was the same as I was thinking and that is the reminiscing of old memories of the show more than having academic arguments over generalized questions.
I agree. It's high-falootin audience members trying to impress them with their question rather than ask 'dumb' fun questions. I much preferred hearing what they stole when the show wrapped, and they clearly much preferred telling us about that (including rent-a-gob!)
frakes is with orville now ,where all the trek people left went
I enjoyed it immensely, up until Gates and Marina locked horns. (for me) That really ruined the atmosphere and as it ended not long afterwards overshadowed the earlier parts of the panel in how I remember the event as a whole. When they were talking about how women were paid less than men and difficult men are considered just having artistic temperament but difficult women are considered bitches it did make me wonder if the problems Marina had with her contracts and almost getting fired were because she was actually a bitch. She certainly seems the kind of person that you cant discuss anything with calmly if her existing view differs to yours. The rest of the panel seemed to know not to even dare try to disagree with her and only Gates gave it a go and look how that turned out. I would probably want to fire her as well if that is what she is like to deal with.
Sirtis did not up the tension over a disagreement. McFadden did. Sirtis even admitted to overgeneralizing, and her original comment was an expansion of de Lancie's, but with her own personal experience thrown in to expand on it. Friends give an inch in a disagreement, especially in front of people like this. McFadden did not, made no attempt to lighten the air of her disagreement, and went right for the take-offense air. In a conversation among supposed friends, you don't need to go after someone in such a way if you disagree with them. This was McFadden's fault for spoiling the mood. This was not academic, but supposed to be among close friends, public, and for entertainment purposes. It makes me think the whole family spiel from this cast is actually more a marketing line for these conventions than the reality.
Man The Orville sucked.
thanks for this
It seems as though every time Marina starts talking the mood on-stage just drops.
Also, i think the question at 1:13:00 or somewhere around there, was asking whether there was anything that their characters were supposed to do in the episode, where they as the actors thought "My character wouldn't do that!" Not worded really well, but a good question. Would've been nice to have an actual answer to that, instead of a somewhat condescending "well that's acting." or "On doctor shows they aren't actually performing surgeries y'know".
Also, "The problem with America is that they get into acting because they want to be famous, not because they love acting like we do in Britain" (Paraphrased obviously). And she said that while 6 out of the 7 other people on the stage are American. Lots of love for your coworkers I see.
That's great, getting so much time with them. I think that things went pretty well until the end. Marina is clearly the demonstrative one, but they needed someone to get things going and for the most part, good balance.
Well-played by Gates, though. She stepped in and said what needed to be said.
This was good! Great tummy memories. However, the ending with Marina and Patrick comments hit reality and I'm not sure is small few of Trekkies were ready to hear that
Thank You for posting as it was all enjoyavble!
Thanks for posting this. I don't get to go to the CONS. From watching this and reading comments below I find it sad that some of the rudeness toward the fans goes on. If it weren't for the fans they would not be so popular. Most of the fans get attached to the characters they played. To some fans they are very real. In addition, it is expensive to get to go see these celebrities and fans want to hear about the star's experiences filming the show not politics.
Thank you
Been to a few STcons and every time it sounds like a damn re-run
Oi! Troi! Shut it!
121.10 the final slap down by Gates to Marina. Ouch!
A really great talk with brilliant ideals for young people of the future
OMG. I didnt realise that Marina Sirtis was actually British. When heard her talk on this i thought she was drunk. But as being British makes total sense the accent now!
YES! I was hoping you'd have this! I read the "cliffs-notes" version on startrek.com. Glad Marina ditched the moderator!
Thank you for uploading! I was there and I loved this panel. For me it looked pre-agreed that Marina took the lead in this, because someone had to if they declined a moderator. I liked it that way!
Thanks for the upload!
I like that someone asked about the prospects for humanity moving forward in so many words and got a couple of positive answers from the panel. I too recognise that we are at a tipping point. This is a very dangerous time we live in. When Gates suggested that we ask the question "what can I do" that was an important point. So often we feel helpless against the backdrop of world events and the political battlefield. But individuals do have the power to affect big changes. Having said that, if we don't work together and recognize our common humanity and our universal need for love and belonging we really are in trouble. We can't allow thugs, gangsters and tyrants to rule our world and divide it any longer. Some form of democratic world government is required. If the UN (which I have a lot of respect for but isn't enough) cannot be reformed to serve the needs of humanity; we the people will have to establish it by some other root.
dangerous times?! What the hell are you talking about?!
I love you soooo much gates
Poor Gates. I feel for her.
Wonder where Frakes is? Busy directing?
I read that he was in Canada directing Discovery and his flights were cancelled due to really bad weather and they couldn't get him in another way.
He was supposed to be at the convention, but in the very last moment his appearance was cancelled, because some flight was cancelled.
Legend says someone tipped him off that Marina would be drunk so he up and split
Q have to take Marina's Voice.
This is so good for my soul. Many wholesome laughs!!
Every time i see this crew together, i get automatic multiple nerd-gasm.
Hey heather great job bringing us these great trek panels every year, anyway what was the deal with the moderator hogging so much time on almost every trek panel did anyone comment on this while u were there?
That moderator is there every year and hosts every panel, so someone in corporate likes him.
Thank you
Marina dominates these panels all the time, love her but gets annoying...really needed a moderator to lead the conversation, slow start. The cast seemed to lack energy and enthusiasm considering its 30 anniversary expected more. Thanks again for posting Heather!
The focus isn't ON TNG nowadays... It's on the new TV show and the reboot films starring the new incarnations of the TOS characters.
Everybody realizes by this point they'll NEVER make another TNG film with this cast. At best, these actors will play cameos in movies. It's a sad reality but that's how it is.
There's that and one has to admit TNG may have made has much money as TOS did in its first 20 years BUT TNG burned through itself a lot faster. It had 7 years on TV, 4 films, half of which were lackluster and really didn't advance the storyline that much and reinforced the notion that there were 2 important characters (the TV series had 3 -- Picard, Data, and Worf; the films focused on Picard and Data to the detriment of the other characters).
For all its success, I never felt TNG had quite the chemistry and sense of family that TOS did... That might have been reinforced more in TOS by the death of Spock early in the film cycle and the time it took for the Spock character to fully rehabilitate (over 2 films). There was a genuine sense of family with that group of characters, they went through hell together and back. By comparison, the TNG storylines were almost glib and the eventual destruction of Data didn't have the impact of Spock's death because he already had a spare body ready with his memories in it! Half the TNG films were good, 1 was decent, and 1 was generally awful. But in a sense, with 7 years of TV episodes, there had to have been at least 2 years of TV episodes with better stories than ANY of the TNG movies... Oh, and for a lot of people, they RUINED the Borg pretty much for good in First Contact. The idea of the Borg Queen came out of nowhere and they already had weakened the Borg in the last 2-3 years of TNG. The Queen put the nail in the Borg as the most menacing villains and they were the best to come along since the Klingons!
Eventually, Paramount will run through the cycle with TOS in pictures and I guarantee you they WILL reboot TNG like they did TOS because the last thing Hollywood studios are is creative and original!
Seriously, it'll happen after Pine and Quinto get tired and move on after 1, 2, 3 more films tops OR a Nu-Trek film finally flops and they (Paramount) decide on a new direction (re: new cast, reboot of a later series most likely candidate being TNG).
@avenger - your opinion.
Iggl piggle
Iggle piggle
@Christopher "as friendly as a gunshot through the leg" Barredo
And it is MY opinion... Informed opinion.
Older than you by at least 10-15 years. I've watched Star Trek probably at least twice as long as you've been ALIVE...!
They HAVEN'T made a TNG film in 15 years. What does that tell you about Paramount doing projects with the TNG cast?
It's not happening... They'll recast the characters. Enough people went to see TOS with recast parts, I bet someone in the company is already looking beyond TOS when that reboot film series runs it course.
It's not what I would want to see happen but they have a certain pattern established here.
They'll recast TNG because they have a mentality about the audience and audience familiarity. That's why they lied about Star Trek: Discovery and tweaked it the way they have...
Seemed like a bit of tension between Gates and Marina?
yeah very awkwad
Yeah something definitely something happened backstage! Marina has pissed everyone off by calling the shots and saying NO to the moderator.
The disagreement between gates and marina starts on 1:18:10
Marina really does over-generalize. Then she also puts England vs the US making it appear as if there's a vast difference between the two - where there's no doubt that there are actor students in the UK who are just as fascinated and focused on gaining fame and fortune, and there are plenty of actors in the US who do have a message to say, and who are there for the craft of acting. In that sense, Gates seems to be the wiser person by taking all of these things into consideration before making any sort of statements.
Marina is not ignorant - she speaks from her own experiences and her own thoughts/opinions - but she's not quite as observant as Gates is (not to mention that Gates knows a lot more actor students via her teaching career).
Wow, the *whole panel* looks squeamish while she's talking. 1:20:27 watch Brent: "She's still talking?" XD
Pleased to see Gates standing up to rent-a-gob's generalisations.
I love these big panels, but that means some panelists barely get to talk, like John and LeVar barely spoke
That's awesome. Marina gripes about how women are not treated equally for ten minutes and then has a cat fight with Gates. I love irony.
Is that irony? I genuinely have a hard time nailing the concept down, but they were just having a disagreement about something and I'm not sure how that runs against the grain of gender equality.
It's like the "INtro' scene at the end of Galaxy Quest as the crew exits the ship on stage. Whoever wrote that movie not only watched the show but has been to a convention or two.
yknw ive noticed marina w her own panels. she likes to talk alot, while the others listen to her talk. if frakes was there. johnathan wouldv controlled marina's tantrums and absurdity like he always has. thats why she was pissing off everyone who looked annoyed, brent was always funny among his co-stars. michael had his moments too, but they're all besties im sure. bc they know what marina does w their reunions. most of them were probably having a bad day and marina wasn't helping their moods. marina does this all the time. she speaks her mind and likes to take control of every panel reunion they have which i have noticed. sirpatstew knows shes joking. she invented the siroldbaldy thing which patrick didnt mind, bc the other co-stars started saying it for years. but seeing john was even better esp w denise and levar. its rare to not see these3 together w the others alongside patrick. surprised will didnt show. then he wouldv had a trekkie-mythology history lesson w/a fan like their 25th, thnx. i luv these TNGreunions esp the "in the 24th century..." gag😍
Michael Dorn should have been a super star
Someone take the mic off Marina.
what the shit! Gates is almost 70..68..she looks 40..what is she on!
Don Sharma Botox
This was not intended to be an academic panel, folks. That was excessively and uncomfortably defensive by McFadden. Sirtis was making a somewhat valid point that Brit TV is filled with ugly people and attractive people with lackluster hair and makeup, and thus between that and their lower pay, prevents some of the over-glamorization of acting that happens here. She wasn't being bigoted against American youth or justifying the hiring of foreign actors over American ones for roles here. Hell, she could have thrown in that UK acting schools are the best in the world, and she didn't even touch that! McFadden went for the throat without giving any compassionate means of retreat or even meeting Sirtis halfway. It's a friendly panel of this quote unquote "family" cast from this series, and McFadden really soured this night spouting her credentials and trying to shame Sirtis.
McFadden had an equally somewhat valid point to make about young American actors struggling against the stigma of not taking the profession seriously versus their UK/Australian/Canadian/etc counterparts that are disproportionately represented in Hollywood, but she didn't need to make it in that way. However, this is a WIDESPREAD critique of current trends in American actors and is backed up by some actual real differences in culture/training/experience/etc. How much of the casting results is due to justifiable shortcomings and how much of it is stigma against, particularly male, American actors' alleged lack of skill? This can be discussed cordially among family or friends or, at the very, least former colleagues in a non-academic environment without inviting the discussion be shut down due to the sudden hostility.
No Jhonathan Franks, commander Riker?
Flights to Vegas cancelled so he could not make it.
David Jackino , I see,
David Jackino Ah thanks 🙂
It was going so well!
The fuck happened? They started getting into the wage gap myth
Feminism is Cancer. That is all.
The Moral of the story is: Don't EVER get rid of the Moderator when Marina Sirtis is on the Panel because she will take over as she does here. I mean, this Panel is about the most awkward, tense and least fun I've seen, and rent-a-gob set my teeth on edge every time she opened her mouth. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes a woman actually deserves the title "Bitch" and either Marina Sirtis was hunting down that accolade down with some veracity or she comes by it naturally. How she was condescending towards the woman who'd named her son after Patrick and James T Kirk, two men I imagine had inspired her, (believe it or not but Characters can be just as inspirational as real life people) was just disgusting. She LITERALLY has no filter and the most disturbing thing for me is, she really doesn't seem to care.
I had to stop watching because of Marina. I'm pretty sure she just loves the sound of her own voice.
Gates = 1 - Marina = 0, Damn that was awkward. They needed a moderator, and not Marina. She's probably a nice person, but she's clearly the weakest link of the group acting wise, and yet has to be the loudest to get the most attention. ;)
I have no real comment on acting, but kudos to Gates for stepping in and refuting the generalization, even though it must have been an uncomfortable thing to do. Someone needed to say it.
These people were paid actors, not trekkies, and these panels always reveal that...
I wish I could like this comment twice
Why would someone assume otherwise?
I wanna see all of every single bit of their Behind the Scenes
Geeeeezus, Marina was talking BEFORE she even sat down!
And she's the only one who immediately sat down while John de Lancie and Denise Crosby were professionally standing waiting for the whole cast. Crosby was shocked and looked at de Lancie then back at Marina Sirtis and talked to her to tell her to stand up. Hahahaha
7:27 We discovered an actual alien! That guy seems to have eyes on top of his head. You'd think an alien would be advanced enough to use space contacts instead of space glasses. I wonder what was happening on the ceiling that was so important that it required the use of glasses?
Marina really is a pretty coarse personality, from the appearances I've seen at cons. Rather overbearing, too.
Bullshit, she's still married to Michael Lamper.
She's a sexy older woman, that's for sure.
Neville, what a sexist and ageist thing to say. Objectifying women and implying it's uncommon for older women to be viewed as attractive.
4:02 Patrick Stewart is crazy lol. Look at the way hes looking at Michael Dorn
"Would have put him up to 5 speed" whoosh over so many 22:20
Gates always looks like she just beamed down.
Loved the question for John at 14:55.
I wish he'd have gotten more questions. Q was one of my favorite characters. Loved his whole talk about "his" judge's robe lol
Can someone turn off Marina's microphone. Thanks.
LOL
The question "Why do all the aliens in ST look humanoid?" is answered in Season 6 Episode 20 of TNG, "The Chase". And it's a pretty damn good episode too. And has nothing to do with casting, lol.
Significantly lacking Frakes but I understand; I hope Discovery is worth it. I really want it to do well
PANEL STARTS 4:31
Woohoo!!!
Marina took too much control... Gates and her conflict is obvious. Gates knows that many Americans Just. Want. To. Act.
I see that she is jaded by the American culture, and I don't blame her, it is quite horrid the desire for fame over the desire to be a good actor or actress... But she, as an outsider sees only what she is exposed to. Where Gates is exposed to the REAL dream of American actors and actresses. The dream is to be in a great project, whether it is successful or not.
Sadly Marina seems to be missing that fact. But, she is NOT half Betazoid, and therefore cannot feel that we all feel, or even see what we see.
Sure, many do just want the fame and the fortune, but for every one of those, I'd imagine there are a hundred won just want to be a part of something bigger and greater than themselves. The recognition, the accolades, and the money are great, but the work is a reward in of itself.
And Gates knows that because that is what she does. Marina has been jaded by the sad truth the only those who 'make it' get to tell their stories to us all... And that has skewed her views on things.
Love both women, but the 'Dancing Doctor' knows more about the reality of it than the hammy 'half human' does.
So much for living and incorporating your character into your everyday life...
Still love them all though.
#sttngforever
Well said, sir.
Mirina coming in from left field on the politics and polarizing opinions.
Too bad Number One himself, Jonathan Frakes had to miss this panel out!
What no kiss for Q?
I read some of the comments. I see there is no reason to add one more dislike towards Marina, but I really want to. One thing is that she talks too much, but the way she handled that lady that introduced her kid... I was waiting for her to back a bit off, but it never happened! Really rotten behaviour. I haven't watched all yet - I'm sure there's more to come too.
Life on Hoth Do you mean Patrick Kirk and his mother? They appeared at every panel asking exactly the same question, the audience were sick of them too.
