- Flying at 10,000 feet - The Wind is Too Strong pt2of2
10,000 Feet - WOW the view.
This is what the world looks like from 10,000 feet, quite beautiful but isolating - appropriate for these times I suppose.
Now for the descent from 10,000feet.
Again assuming no wind here are my flight calculations.
We need to arrive under the 8,500 feet step, so I will need to commence my glide at a certain distance from it.
Over the center of Fraser Island is as close as I can get to Maryborough airport at a distance of 20 nm.
My best glide speed Vx is 55 knots, with a descent rate of 600 fpm.
Calculating the results;
Every minute of 600 feet descent I will travel horizontally 55nm/60min = 0.9nm per minute.
From 10,000 feet I can travel 10,000/600 = 17 minutes x 0.9nm. Answer: 15nm. I can't make it.
If I have a 20 knot tail wind;
I will travel 75nm/60min = 1.25nm x 17minutes = 21.35nm.
This will be close - I Will NEED a good Tailwind!
So what happened.......
Turned out as expected by calculations.
I have seen tests showing that if my engine was completely stopped I would have had less drag and a better glide range. Not sure though how much that would have helped me here. At least I got to terra firma.
So as you can see - a headwind was not helpful, but the earlier calculations already told us the full story.
Stay safe and KNOW your glide range. Don't risk an engine out with no where to land.

Very interesting, thanks. Cheers Jeff
****Nice presentation.
An excellent video. Professionally made. Exciting and informative. Thanks. 👍😎
Glad you enjoyed it!
Flew hang glider at rainbow beach about 30 years ago. Loved the coastline along that area. Thanks for the video.
Outstanding sir, and excellent information.
400,000 subscribers nice good job love the video just bought myself a maverick going for the first ride tomorrow!
Uses the same visor as me. Uses the same engine as me. Also uses the phrase “commit aviation”... That’s got to be worth a subscription.
SUBSCRIBED.
Sonds like a GOOD plan! Cheers. Have you modified your helmet with a locking mechanism on top like I recently did? If not would you like to see it?
@@CrayonboxAviationAdventures - A locking mechanism? No. I’ve not made any modifications to my helmets. Is it to lock the visor in the up position?
Amazing video 👍🏻 Amazing camera work 👍🏻 Nice editing 👍🏻 Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Enjoy all your videos, keep them coming and thanks 👍🏼🇺🇸
Thank You ...I enjoyed the flight and knowledge...👍😎🇺🇸
Loving the trip great video
Nicely done.
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice flight and well produced. Thanks For your hard work.
That weather is glassy smooth!! Awesome stuff.
It was! And it was again yesterday ;-) Another video in the pipeline - with serious consequences!
Some great shots of the Breaksea Spit. Looks totally different in the air compared to crossing it in a boat.
Just flew my trike this evening but didn’t have the ocean view you had, well done mate:)
I am sure the flight was still most enjoyable as they often are..... you'll just have to move 😆
Awesome. Thank you. A question about Fraser Is. Are you allowed to/can you, land on some of the remote beaches? Also really enjoy when you throw in local history.
I fly a P&M GT450 in Scotland Yours looks like a Quick R never ventured above 8000 ft but gets a lot colder than 12deg especially in the winter over here. Summer flying brings slightly warmer temps but uncomfortable thermal turbulence my old instructors saying rock and roll !!!! something you will get a lot more of it in Aus . Ps cracking vidio must get my self a go pro to my record flights and my stuttering radio calls ! P
That was cool thanks for sharing i want one lol what make is that you have revolt or?
Nice😎👍🇦🇺
Alright Alright Alright!
I don't get it, you can't restart the engine once it's turned off?
Gotta love them bumps on final hey. Hate westerlies
More westerlies yesterday - 20 kts! Ohh What Fun!!
What equipment with a handheld radio do you suggest on a trike to get good radio communication?
Regards from Germany
Thomas the electric flyer
Stewart how do you power your cameras for long flights. My battery in GP last only about an hr.
Thanks for the fly along! Cool video
FPV FLYBY 68 Im using usb cables. I have several usb sockets in the trike, or you can use battery banks.
