    What do you think of the Wurkkos TS23?

      For a tactical flashlight that wasn't designed by Wurkkos from the ground up (it's a rebadged Aplos T03 that's no longer sold) the TS23 is certainly impressive. Wurkkos didn't simply print their logo on the flashlight, they replaced the quirky Aplos T03 UI with its own firmware. Wurrkos or Sofirn has also adopted one or two Aplos models and rebranded them as their own, but I can't recall which ones.
      I held on for a month before buying the TS23 and the Wurkkos direct store heavily discounted it for just four or five days. I wish it offered a third group option which has stepless ramping (the Sofirn SC33 does) but tactical light pundits usually abhor the smooth ramping option. They just want Turbo or Strobe in a single click, lol. 😀
      The reflector head is large, relative to its tube girth. This would not fit into the small sized Wurkkos nylon pouch (the TD04 will) and I had to buy the medium sized holster just for this light. I like its fat and floody beam with an intense center hot spot. Weerapat, the Thailand based UA-camr was the first to review this a few months ago. He highlighted that the TS23 is capable of sustaining High (not Turbo) for quite a long time before the thermal throttling kicked in.
      I use a Molicel P42A 21700 cell for my TS23. I figured that I wouldn't be looking for extra long run times with this kind of torch, therefore I might as well exploit its brightness with a lower internal resistance cell! 🙂

      @@Next96300 I've never seen proper demo of the T03 (in English). Someone on Reddit mentioned that he had a T03 and described its UI as "messy". Could you elaborate why you feel that the T03's UI is better? The T03 is no longer listed on Aplos' website, probably because it didn't sell much so Wurrkos bought over the design from Aplos, changed the switch, driver and and firmware.

      @@StratmanII as always you bring the info! I'd never have known it was a rebadged Aplos otherwise, that's interesting.
      I like he option of stepless ramping, but generally I prefer that as an option as my favourite is a nice spread of stepped modes. But being able to dial in brightness can be really useful and I like that on my lights that support it. I get where the tactical crowd comes from, if a light is advertised as tactical then the UI really needs to match the use case, but the perfect balance in my opinion is being able to switch between UI profiles, in which case adding a stepless profile under five clicks would be pretty easy to do.
      I'm not a big holster guy for my lights in general, though I did holster carry an Olight S1R baton whilst in IT work. For the TS23 it's big enough that it warrants a cargo or jacket pocket, but carrying in a bag with a fixed holster would probably be best if off person. I think an elastic sided holster would prob best, though I think a lot of holsters would necessitate bezel up carry.
      Oh using a different cell to maximise higher output is interesting, besides the light handling it, doesn't it get awkward to handle after a while on high/turbo? I find myself in moonlight and medium most often with it myself.

      @@gearedforward Thank you, Paul! I hope I got your name right! 🙂
      The reason I would like a stepless ramping option on ALL flashlights is because no flashlight manufacturer adheres to an ISO certified standard when it comes to selecting the brightness. It's no different than car manufacturers choosing the gear ratios for their cars' transmission - some ratios are too spread apart while others are too close to one another. Some gear configurations are optimized for acceleration and speed; others are meant for economy and leisurely cruising at top speed. You can't please everybody. A stepless ramping mode gives the user the option to finely adjust the light output exactly to their needs.
      I don't think it would bankrupt the flashlight maker to add an extra group meant for stepless ramping to their TS23 firmware. Don't like stepless mode? Well, don't choose it, simple!
      Case in point: the Wurkkos FC12 originally had a stepped and stepless ramping groups. I guess Wurkkos had received brickbats for endowing the FC12 with smooth ramping and marketing it as a "tactical flashlight". So it switched its subsequent batches to a stepped (Outdoor mode) and Tactical mode (medium & turbo only). In doing so, not only Wurkkos deprived new FC12 owners like myself the smooth ramping feature but the new UI also introduced a firmware bug which locks the flashlight when the tail cap switch is mashed quickly. It's an intermittent problem but it's also annoying. Not only that, the FC12's lowest mode is rather bright and could have been "medium" on other flashlights.
      I read in r/flashlight that Wurkkos refuses to acknowledge the new UI has a problem. It probably didn't want to be swamped with product recalls and exchanges. A tactical flashlight is supposed to be 100% dependable and as long as the battery has a reasonable charge and the battery cap is screwed on properly, it should light up every single time. Since this odd firmware bug exists in the current incarnation of the FC12, in my opinion this flashlight no longer qualifies as a "tactical light". At least the earlier generation of the FC12 won't let you down when you want instant Turbo. 😀
      (Sorry for the long rant!) 🤓

      @@StratmanII you did get it right and don't apologise, it's valuable discussion!
      I think most of not all should have an option of stepless, even if it's obnoxious to switch between the UI modes, most will switch once if they want it probably anyway. There are occasions when a lights low or even moonlight modes are far too much, sometimes simply because they don't account for the reality of multiple emitters or a throwy reflector, so you get a low lumen number but a higher practical result. Stepless would be a nice answer to those kinds of lights when needed.
      I can see why a company would unfortunately try and ignore an issue if acknowledgment brings liability or broadcasts he issue further. It's still unfortunate and terrible for the folks affected by bugs though, an unreliable flashlight is something that could go really wrong, just slipping/tripping can be dangerous if your light doesn't act as expected/intended.

    This is a great flashlight I own this light and it never gets hot it's just too big to carry all the time in your pocket so I always go back to my nitecore P23i .... But no doubt this is an awesome life and the price is always amazing on Amazon

      Completely agree, the big flare of the reflector makes it a bit difficult to pocketcarry frequently, a jacket definitely helps with that.

    Is the unprotected battery that comes with this flashlight unsafe compared to protected battery? Not sure why they provided unprotected as draining the battery can cause it to corrode over time and cause it to catch on fire when charging as it is not protected.

    • @gearedforward
      @gearedforward  28 днів тому +1

      There are several benefits that push some manufacturers and users to unprotected cells, because they don't have the circuit they can have higher capacity and current capability, they're also usually cheaper. Some lights will actually trip the protection of a cell when attempting turbo and require an unprotected cell, I had this issue when I got my Armytek Wizard Pro years ago.
      As for safety, yes protected cells are safer as they have the added layer of protection from shorting, over heating, and over discharge.
      Practically speaking a decent quality flashlight can mitigate a lot of these issues and a little user education goes a long way. Protected is always safer, but the gap is slim enough it's user preference. Hope thst helps!

      @@gearedforwardthanks man🎉 so if I buy this flashlight from workuss ts23 that comes with unprotected battery cell, is there risk that it could catch on fire or explode since it is unprotected? I am planning on charging it with iphone charger 5V/1amp and use it regularly and charge again or any advice like not draining the battery to 0% if it matters to prevent any catastrophic accident you can provide me with this flashlight?

    • @gearedforward
      @gearedforward  27 днів тому +1

      @houman2009 I don't think there's any serious risk with this flashlight and the provided cell. General advice: avoid exposing the cell to extreme temperatures, avoid completely discharging it, if you're not going to use it for a while try to store it at around 60% charge. Your iPhone charger will work fine to charge via the flashlights port, but at 1amp just bear in mind it will charge slowly and would best be done overnight. Li-ion cells carry a lot of energy and can be scary, but as long as they are from a reputable retailer, in a reputable device, and are treated with respect you'll be okay. If you do pick up the light I hope you update with how you are liking it!
