Wow! You just saved me a lot of anguish. Thank you for the clear and concise instructions on replacing the graphics card. I thought my 2011 iMac was now a boat anchor, and was about to remove the two drives I installed a few years ago and consolidate everything on my 2017 iMac. Everything I had read and listened to prior to running across your video told me that a bad card in the 2011 was not repairable, or at least not worth repairing. I'm headed to eBay today to find a new card so I can get the machine back up and running. Thanks again. One other thing: I can't believe that no one has commented on this. Am I the only one you've helped? Can't be....
4/30/2020 Very good video I have this exact model with the GPU issue of not letting computer boot, so needed to do GPU bake and thermal paste to get the iMac back up and running, the hardest part of the job is trying to get the thermal sensor cable back into the motherboard, but the bake did the fix, now that dam cable, ugh. Your video covered all the main steps needed for the repair.
Your English is very good. The detail and thoroughness is excellent. So many try to fit this in a short video which doesn't always give all the information needed. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Hello! Just to let you know I had this problem in my mid 2011 27" iMac. Thank you very much for your video, I used information from yours and other youtube videos, and the bake of the GPU in the oven WORKED!!! AT FIRST!!! I just can't believe :) One thousand thanks!
Thank you so much for this. I've been given an iMac with a bad graphics card from a frustrated friend who took it to the Geek Squad for repair three times before he gave up on the computer. This video clearly shows me how to change out the graphics card. I've seen from some research the graphics cards on the model iMac I've got go bad frequently. I feel confident now about making the repair economically. Thanks!
Very detailed repair. Only problem is your graphics card will burn out again soon if you don't replace those thermal pads. The problem I ran into is that 1mm thick thermal pads make the graphics card not set flush with the heat sink. Meaning the lower half of the graphics card is touching but the thickness of the thermal pads cause the upper half of the graphics card not to touch. There is a type of thermal pad that is part paste part pad and that is what they used at the manufacturer. The cost of replacing this is about 36 to 40 dollars for a 3 by 3 inch square. You MUST use this type of pad or your card will burn out again. The thermal paste is called K5 Pro viscous thermal paste. it's what Apple uses in iPhones as well.
That was a great video, thank you. I had the same thing go wrong recently with my 2009 IMac. I was able to put my mac back together easily thanks to your instruction.
That stupid temperature sensor took me 20 mins to reconnect, when I swapped the 5670 512MB card, with a 6970M 2GB card. I think I spent as much time fighting with that thing, as I did with the whole job lol
Very good Video ! I didn‘t know that i can get the GPU out, without putting everything else out. This will safe me lots of time. You deserve a lot more Follower. And you should do some more videos with Apple Products. People wanna see that shit. Haha Anyways, good video, my thumb is up and you got a new Follower.
Hi, I have an old imac 2009 27” working but video does not shows up on internal screen, I noticed that the very same component on logic board you mentioned to pay attention in the video when removing gpu is missing. It is marked c6401, think it is a capacitor, do you know what size is it to find a replacements? Many thanks, great video!
I have a mid-2011 iMac 27" i7 with the 2gb GPU. Where would you find a replacement card ? is there a way to repair the original card if it desoldered itself?
This is a great vid for a like-for-like GPU replacement but is it possible to upgrade the AMD Radeon HD 6970M in my 27" iMac 2011 to a faster chip in the same way?
hello, very good video!!! i have a little question: i have a 21.5 iMac and i wanted to change the thermal paste, but when i boot up the iMac the screen remains black (but the system works fine in share screen). Due to that i saw that the graphic card doesn't show up anymore... do you have any idea where that could come from? Thank you in advance
your screws have heads mine are without which link the graphics card to the black board. I want a better graphics card in my mid 2011 iMac 27 inch. Can you tell me where to get one?
good afternoon td well liked your video well explained just take a doubt imac 2011 21 inch i was seeing where the video card is and its imac is different from 27 inch on my and different where the video card has to take the card without disassembling the plate all the same what u did from already thank you
Thank you so much for this! I performed the operation and my iMac is back! However, the fan ill not quit running. I must have missed a connection. Any clue?
fabulous, we have a mid 2011 that shows the apple logo, though it looks bigger, starts to boot up about 2/3rds of the progress bar and then shuts off. We did various keyboard tests and depsite the utilities informing that the HD is ok it also comes up with can not verify all of the disk. Any idea what this is?
Great video but also a shining example of why Apple is just a ridiculously overrated company. Over 30 minutes to replace a GPU (with special equipment). Any PC will take exactly 5 minutes and 1 screwdriver. And the PC (at 2/3 the cost) will kick Apple's ass on everything except style and a few specialized software programs.
Hi how are you thank you very much for the video helps a lot .... I need help from you if you don’t mind if you can help me to buy the video card from the eBay my computer is iMac 27 2011 but I’m seeing a lot of video card but I didn’t know which one is the right one to buy my phone number 914-837-8627 I will be more than Thankful if you help me with that I’m a big fan for you
My screen just randomly goes black. No ghost image when I hold a flashlight to it. Just black. If I connect an external monitor after it goes black the external works fine. Is this the same type of issue?
do you know why sometime my computer just went black out and you still heard it running , i have to manually turn off and turn back on .. it work again is that the graphic card problem or what is the problem
I did this on my late 2009, 21.5 inch iMac, it had a ATI 4670 256MB I upgraded to a ATI 6750 512MB but the screen is now black with sound do you have any tips on what might have happened?
Help! my 2011, 27 inch imac gpu went (1st a checkered screen, also a dim spot in the corner of the screen when it use to work), it was replaced with a used one at a shop & it stopped working in a few days (a few FCP & iMovie projects). At the shop he claims he fixed the new/old card & it will work but not for editing. I don't know what to do (am in uk) next, I NEED A NEW GPU, IS THERE BETTER GPU OPTIONS?
Thank you for your well infomred video. I will apprecaite if you or anyone in your forum could tell me what is happening to my Imac mid 2011 27 inch not coming on. The stand-by LED light on the boards comes on and goes off immdiately when I insert the power cable. It is not stable for me to press the switch botton . So is the problem with my power board of the logic board. I need your urgent response for me to know what to buy as replacement
Ok. I went to Amazon and I found one from a company named Valley of the Sun and it says that it was converted from a Dell Graphics card. Is that going to work? I went to eBay and didn’t find many used ones (mostly Refurbished) and the used ones takes too long to deliver from Taiwan or China.
Need help please: reballing or replacement with a new card? I have the same problem with my imac. The technics gave me those 2 options. Any advice? Thank you.
Hi thank you very much for your videos are very useful, I have a question for you, I got a iMac 27" from 2011 can I upgrade de graphic card from 1gb replacing for another one of 2 gb? Thank you
Hello first of all thank you very much for your video .. please would you tell me if I can replace an Amd 6770m of iMac 27 i5 2011 with Amd 6970m 2Gb Ram ? Please let me know ASAP...many thanks... cheers from Italy 🇮🇹... ps just subscribed
Too much thermal paste. And never NEVER ever put old thermal grease back in. Use thermal pads and watch thecorrect thckness. Youll needdifferent pads for the different components of the graphics card. And for sure cooling the RAM modules extend their life so those ARE important. The Sensor from behind the logic board is best installed with the bended sharp tweezer in upright position. And make sure to cover the PSU while repairing.
My iMac keeps turning off but running in background done all the Priam re sets etc. It’s had screen removed and blown out with airline. What else can it be. Would it be graphic card ?

Good Presentation. Does this work for a Mac 21.5" 2011 as well?

I speak Portuguese
This is a great video, thank you. Do you know where I could buy the complete graphics card and “heatsink” (don’t know if this is correctly written)?
i can change for other model of graphics card, for exemplo, a graphics card more recent?
Which video cards are compatible with a 27 inch iMac from 2009?
Great video but also a shining example of why Apple is just a ridiculously overrated company. Over 30 minutes to replace a GPU (with special equipment). It took me two days to repair it. The way this PC is assembled is total crap.

Or you could just bake the graphics card in the oven at 200 deg C for 8 minutes
