As with all breeds, each personality and whether they are back of the pack, middle, or head of the pack can vary.
They're great dogs. Very easy to manage. And they are kinda of funny.
When I lived in the USA vets told me that it is the American cocker spaniel that is aggressive due to breeding NOT the English cocker.
