      well i'm glad to hear you enjoy my projects, and do you mean recently regarding the Zine or a previous shout-out? we've given each other several shout-outs over the past 4 years or so, although now its a bit pointless to give him a shoutout. hahaha

    Wonder if it would be possible to take some digital camera apart and place the sensor where the film is exposed. To kind of have a digital insert, that you could play around with using the lenses and getting an idear of what it might look like,,, without changing the Bolex´s inside.

    yeah mold/fungus eats lens coatings in time.

    I keep hoping I'll run into a broken camera like that somewhere. I'm really interested in taking one apart to see all the workings, and then maybe trying to convert it into a digital camera with a Raspberry Pi.
    I honestly can't even force myself to do that with one that still works, though. It seems weirdly wrong to destroy something that works, even if it's not all that practical in this day and age.

      would you want it to be a bolex or a still camera? you could modify something like an old 1960s polaroid land camera by just making a digital cartridge for it.

      For ascetics I think it would have to be something like the Bolex. I have a number of old still cameras I'm planning to convert when I have the time/money. Like, I have a Brownie Hawkeye that would be really fun once it's converted, but I don't think it would feel right to me if it recorded video.

      perhaps like an old Bell & Howell 8mm camera would fit what you want but not be as expensive?

    • @isstvan82

      Ohh, that's actually just about what I'm looking for. I'll have to keep my eyes open for them. Especially broken ones don't seem to go for much at all...
      Well, next time I lose my mind I know what project I'll start up.

    You cut away from the vacuum gauge too soon for me to read how far the reading went to. What is the lowest reading you have obtained ? Good idea reusing an old pressure cooker. Good idea as a first try with the lens as well. Wish I had thought of that idea years ago. If you dig up a graph of water vapour partial pressure vs temperature there is a pressure and temperature combination that really works well at drying things out. Too many years have passed for me to remember now but it is worthwhile to know. Cheers.

    Doesn't lenses have some sort of gas sealed in them to prevent fogging? I know rifle scopes and binoculars do.

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  7 років тому

      that sounds like a specialty thing.

      Higher end lenses are sealed with nitrogen to keep water vapor and oxygen out. You can accumulate mildew inside the lens because water vapor will condense inside the lens when you go from warm to cold environments. For instance Panavison buys new lenses and totally rebuilds them with their own proprietary housings that include charged nitrogen sealant. But they still fog if you use them too soon. Ambient temperature is a factor in cinematography.

      if a lens fogged, i'd just put it back into the vacuum chamber and fill it with nitrogen or whatever. however i dont think these lenses are air-tight like professional lenses would be.

    Classic problem of lens separation. You could separate the two lenses, clean them and rejoin with Canadian Balsam.
    Or not!

    • @RinoaL

      i honestly didnt know it was a thing until opening this lens, makes a lot of sense though. thanks for the info!

    I cringed when you took a screwdriver to the front group mount. You need a spanner that will contact both sides and has little chance of slipping and damaging the front element.
    The haze is from the oil on the blades. The blades should be dry. Lubricant from the focusing helicoid leaked onto them. It doesn't really matter for this lens so long as the aperture works. On cameras that automatically operate the aperture, oil on the blades is a fatal flaw.
    The two front elements are cemented together. That looks like a bit of element separation. It probably isn't that important, as are the trio of scratches on the front element.
    The rear group might also have some haze, fungus, or scratches. Damage to the rear group affects image quality more than the front group.
    Have fun!

      well after reviewing the 16m footage i shot with it, it turned out perfectly fine, so im pretty happy with it. and dont worry im a real stickler when it comes to fungus on lenses, i dont let infected lenses come into my home.

    did you just legit hammer that screwdriver into that spanner ring omfg what the hell are you doing. staaaaphhhhh pleaaasee. really tho next time you have such an issue try a repair service they will do a proper job for not a lot of money. I am trying to lubricate my kern palliard lenses right now but I am experienced with lens an camera repairs yet still i wont start because I need more info on it. Do not ever hammer a spanner ring because they are mostly brass and it can break, damage the thread or simly you might break the glass. I once broke a leica lens element and i was doing it with the proper tools and proper pressure. It is a wonder that nothing happened to that lens element

      what repair service? and i needed to repair it for my trip, and it worked perfectly when shooting 16mm film. so what is your deal?
      i dont have hundreds of dollars to throw away on a repair service.

    • @Bbarm97
      @Bbarm97 5 років тому +2

      @@RinoaL you could at least buy a 5 dollar spanner ring wrench and open it carefully. it will of course work perfectly but you were risking breaking the lens. it just pains me when people do not treat their equipment properly because of lack of knowledge or patience.

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  5 років тому

      cheapest lens wrench i ended up buying was like 20$. and i dont care about wollensak lenses that much. its not like i did this to a nice switar one or something. chill out. i wasnt impatient, i was trying to get equipment ready for a trip.

    You can do with your lens what you want but to clamp a ciné lens in a vice and hammer a screwdriver on it is an expression of violence. You don’t have the slightest feel for optics or fine mechanics. A sickening video. If you ever wish to have a lens serviced by a professional trained in the trade and equipped with the necessary tools, do not hesitate to contact me. I know these Wollensak lenses, they give very fine images when used properly.
