Took me almost an hour of trying and a failing and trying and failing but finally I got it. and it looks great.
One thing I had to realize, is this video is not mirrored and at the beginning when the captions say "bring the hole to the left shoulder" they are misspeaking and it is actually to come around the right shoulder. Once I realized I was lapping the wrong way that helped alot.I also had to adjust how much I fold over for my waist which is, by virtue of being American, bigger than the sensei's. My specific obi has embroidery that is supposed to be in the front panel, but when I followed these measurements, it ended up toward the back. I would say I only folded it about half the 15 cm (so the top 15 cm folded into about 7 cm flaps instead of the top 30 cm folded into 15 cm flaps).
The drum backing is the hardest part but once I nailed it it's firm and smooth as expected.

it's a traditional "Nagoya Obi" which come in pretty universal lengths I think. According to Wikipedia: "Nagoya obi are shorter than other obi types, about 315 centimetres (10.33 ft) to 345 centimetres (11.32 ft) long, but of the same width, about 30 centimetres (12 in)."
