- This wasn’t a planned video at all but Cubesmart upsets me every time I go to pay my bill! So I made a video about it. I’m pretty sure I’ll upset Cubesmart but hey, I owe it to the community to share my experiences and hopefully Cubesmart gets their stuff together.
So thanks Cubesmart for being the catalyst for this video. May the UA-cam gods allow this to go viral!
Anyway, I have a problem with Cubesmart self storage. Every month they try to rip me off by stating that my due date is actually a whole day and a half sooner than it really is. Check the video out for proof. As extra proof I made sure to upload it the day I filmed so the whole world can see my word is bond!
So this event prompted me to make a video comparing the lovely Extra Space Storage to the scam that is Cubesmart. (Can you see already who I like most?)
So, as I go over in the video, there are 6 main things I look at when shopping for storage units. I only realized these things in hindsight after renting from two simultaneously. The list is as follows:
1. Clean spaces! I can’t really stress how important this is. This definitely will require a visit before renting, and even if you book something because you saw a great price online first, they will still allow you to do a walkthrough of the property and the storage unit you’ll personally be using. So take advantage of this!
Finding clean storage units, (and you really want storage units located indoors) ensures that your items will be stored safely away from vermin such as rats, mice, and all types of bugs looking for a new home! In addition to the wildlife, dirt, will be all over your items potentially ruining much of them.
I checked on both units after 6 months and my stuff at Extra Space Storage just looked like stuff in someone’s house. Whereas my car over at Cubesmart? Well, it looked like it had been abandoned for a decade! Don’t cheap out on this!
2. Secure location- This is another area you definitely don’t want to skimp out on. Ultimately, my car would’ve been better stored near the airport so when I fly down I don’t have to catch an hour-long Uber. But once I told the reps at Extra Space Storage and Cubesmart what kind of car it was, they all unanimously told me to keep it on the North side in one of the safer storage units, lol.
With that said, making sure that they have a gated entry is important. I don’t mean some PVC pipe gate either, you need a large metal gate that would total your car if you rammed it. Even with all of this, if the storage unit is in a sketchy part of town, you run the risk of your things being stolen or vandalized.
3. Doesn’t force you to buy their locks. This is pretty simple, of course the execs at Extra Space Storage and Cubesmart would prefer you to buy their locks because they make a killing on resale, but both reps at Extra Space and Cubesmart both were cool and told me I could find them cheaper across the street at Lowe’s. Customer service at both places were great!
4. Reasonable insurance price. If you have a car you’re storing away, this should be free as long as you have insurance yourself; but if you’re storing your household items, Extra Space Storage REQUIRED me to have insurance. I don’t know if it goes by the size of the unit, but mine is $11/mo for a 10 x 30. I didn’t think that was too bad but you guys let me know!
5. Cheap prices and coupons! The next thing you want to do obviously is find some good prices. It’s a little easier it seems to find Cubesmart coupons and Cubesmart discounts online. Extra Space Storage discounts vary between location to location and were harder for me to find, but, being nice to the lady helping me check in (ended up being the manager), gave me my first month free anyway. Awesome, awesome customer service!
What I usually do is just google “Cubesmart coupons” or “Extra Space Storage coupon code”. Something like that. Or I check on retailmenot. You let me know where you typically find your coupons online from.
Another thing to note is the time of year. The property manager at Extra Space Storage told me that the Spring time was the best time of year to rent storage units as it’s cheaper then…. SIGNIFICANTLY CHEAPER. So if you have a choice in the matter, shoot for a Spring move-in.
6. Fair billing. Finally, we get to billing. The whole reason I ended up making this video. I can’t speak for any other company because I’ve only ever used Cubesmart and Extra Space Storage, but Cubesmart has some really shady business practices when it comes to billing. Also, their price-hike is so much that it’s VERY noticeable and will make you want to switch self storage units. Extra Space Storage went up on me too as I discovered during the video, but it was only $10 and I didn’t notice that hike until, well, TODAY!

Cube smart in nyc are all indoors storage…clean and temperature control…. Very nice and clean and price to match your every day needs…. I so happy I chose cube smart and yes insurance is good for or in case of damage or lost …

Any time! Although I should've done an update. I ended up closing out both. After having my car in Cubesmart, it was almost totaled from mice getting in and eating up things in the engine bay. I now need new washer fluid lines (which, on a station wagon go all the way to the back of the car!) and a new rack and pinion from them eating at a gasket. So yeah, never again with Cubesmart. Although, every location is different.
Extra Space overall wasn't bad. When I moved out though, the new manager was nowhere near as nice as the last. She wouldn't let me keep a trailer in there overnight even though I had a completely full 10x30 unit. They also changed the times you could enter the premises from 24 hours to closing at 10pm. Which, while emptying a 10x30 trailer... I walked out at 9:58pm to load some stuff up, tried to walk back in at 10:01 and guess what? Locked out til morning. Didn't get to load everything up. My coat, wallet, everything was in my unit with the doors wide open. Had to catch an Uber to a hotel nearby. Awful experience. But that was all on the manager. Good luck!

Nice! I just emptied my units last week since we're moving out of state. My stuff in extra space was like the day I put it in over a year ago... My outside cubesmart storage? Terrible! I had a car with other things in there. The engine was eaten up by mice or rats,and the stuff stored outside the car was so filthy I just threw them away!
I went to Extra Space Storage bc the price they had online was almost $50/mo. I went there in person and the manage said the unit was $100/mo. When I mentioned the online price she then proceeded to force the insurance and other fees. Not today I thought in my head lol. Headed to CubeSmart and they didn’t force anything on me. Reserved my spot and I’ll be using them in a couple days. I hope my experience with them is good.

My experience with extra-spece was terrible, well at least the one in Manhattan up the block from Saint Nicholas, my main issue was the restroom, too many times where I had to stop what I was doing in my unit looking for things just to put everything away just to go use the restroom which means me locking everything back up even tho I wasn't done, to then take the elevator back down, then go to the office to drop off my ID to them to hold, then gives me a key, I walk to the restroom and to see the restrooms are disgusting, floor wet, toilet paper on the floor, pee on toilet seat, poop stains inside of toilet, stinks also the sink with dirty suds just dripped off of someone's hands while they were scrubbing. So at time I couldn't hold it, also couldn't put everything back just to go back upstairs to unlock and move things back out after using the restroom, TMI! But at times I had to pee in a cup and had to empty one of my boxes just to shitt in it, I also saw pee nearly dried up leaving the storage walking passed someone else's unit, I guess they couldn't hold it either. Its so stupid, #1 pee before getting there. #2 Hurry the process up because if you need to pee again or poop out of nowhere and still not done, pee and shit in the unit, spray and throw it away. #3 we shouldn't be asked to close our unit, go to the office, hand in our ID, grab a filthy key just to let go of our feces real quick then to go back up to the unit to continue what we were doing. SMH I went to Cubesmart after suffering with Extraspace for 2 years, and the CubeSmarts second biggest unit is actually more spacious then the Second biggest they had in Extraspace it didn't give me extra space after all, and I was paying over $200 at ES, and $144 in Cubesmart, plus I don't need to leave my ID nor grab a dirty key to use the restroom. I almost forgot last year during the pandemic they were not letting people use the restroom I understood at first, I had to go to Planet Fitness every other time, but just a few months ago before I moved out of ES to CS, I asked the guy in the office of Extraspace the last day I emptied the unit, I asked if I could use the restroom one last time before I left, as I was recording and he said No, I asked why because it's still a Pandemic? He said eventually yeah, I was like wow ok thanks. 👍✌ My experience with Cubesmart at Stanley Ave in Brooklyn East NY was great and cleaner then Harlem! 🙌
That is gross! Especially for all that they put you through to use it. The one I was in didn't require us to leave ID's and the bathroom was clean... but I should've made an update video to this. Moving out was AWFUL. Terrible experience that I'll have to talk about once we get settled in. We're under contract to buy a house in the mid-west so lots of packing and logistics consuming my mind right now to make a coherent video, lol.

This is so bizarre cause I swear to god i literally got off the phone an hour ago about this issue
I never even made a follow-up video. Checking out of both of these places was terrible. My car over at Cubesmart was damaged by.... rats. Yep. Got in the engine bay and chewed up as much plastic as they could.
Which unit is better? Stay away from extra space storage. Research the class action lawsuits and amount of break-ins they have. My rates went up 35% after six months. On the 7th month my unit was broken into. Their few security cameras are useless. They told me if they see someone with my things there is nothing they can do. They don't want to accuse anyone.
I think they meant you can pay today , but it can be misleading
ESS DOES RAISE YOUR RENT EVERY 6 MONTHS. I HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO CUSTOMERS EVERY SINGLE DAY. CURRENTLY. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW BAD IT IS. POOR CUSTOMERS AND ESPECIALLY THE ELDERLY ON FIXED INCOMES, WE ROB THEM.
Yeah, it's like cable or anything else. Or even regular home rentals. It's in the contract but I think most people just think they won't have stuff in storage long and in a lot of cases, if you've gone that long without it... well, you probably don't need it!
I worked at Extra Space Storage for 2 years and they’re just as big of a scam. I almost want to make my own video exposing all their shady tactics and lies they made us tell.
Yooo! So I made this video before checking out of extra space. Man you are telling NO LIES. Apparently I had a pleasant experience the first time due to the manager at that site. Well when i went to get all my stuff it was a different story. That new chick wasn't helpful at all and had she been there the first time around I don't think I would've rented the space.

Darn Screenflow! Thanks for the heads up but I moved out, lol. All of that is deactivated now. I tried to blur it out. Something so simple was quite the task and I clearly failed. or just uploaded the wrong video.

That's a good question. The Cubesmart I used did not since they were basically all garages which were poorly kept. As an update, I got my car out of there at the end of January and mice ate my engine!
I got all my stuff out of Extra Space as well, and they were inside, air conditioned, and there wasn't even any dust. The clothes, furniture and everything still smelled like home! Whoever you go with, make sure it's indoors and air conditioned!
Extra space ripped me off cut my lock I paid for from them without notification and I ended up paying to get my stuff Outland left a bunch of trash because that is all they are. Trash!
How are these companies compared to Public Storage? Lol there is no Extra Space in area.
I didn't go with the public storage in the area because it was all outdoor storage. I'm currently having the displeasure of using Cubesmart yet again. This time in a climate controlled unit... it's trash! They keep the temperature RIGHT at 75. So parts of the day the humidity climbs, never past 50% but it's muggy in the air. I got some damp rid and put it in both units along with a temperature monitor.
So far, extra space has still been the best. Just be sure to use a climate controlled unit! Rats got the best of my engine in that Cubesmart.

HaHa! I feel ya there. I just checked out of both of them and to make a long story short... Mice ate my car! Had to catch Ubers around and finally get it towed 600 miles away.
