icl i needed this. So far besides learning vocab I'm working on my tones etc so slow progress since I want to learn grammar more naturally by watching conversations but what is really hard is when I see two characters that look similar and I'm like "wait which one is...." etc XD also gotta save money to get this course now lol
Tones and characters are definitely two difficult aspects of the language, comparing to vocab and grammar. Keep it up🙌💪

Hi, 范老师！I'm a Mandarin learner who is currently at an intermediate level. My goal is to sit the HSK5 in the next few months. I want to read and listen to get tonnes of input, but I'm also aware that pronunciation and accent, rhythm and cadence, etc, are paramount. You're certainly the best Mandarin coach out there -- do you think I'd get much out of this course, or is it more for beginners?

Mandarin pronunciation is still much easier than English, at least for me 💥
Your tongue don't fly and whip around acrobatically like English 😂
No need to vibrate the throat for voiced consonants like in English 💥
Haha can't argue with that as an English learner from China. Speaking decent English is definitely not easy! At least when it comes to syllables of words, Mandarin is so much simpler and easier😄
Pronunciation is not even the hard part of mandarin, even tones can be enhanced with practice, however, learning thousands of characters is definitely the part that requires the most effort
I wish you much sucess with your course, however for me personally pronunciations and tones are not a problem at all. That's a reason, why I started learning Mandarin in the first place. I have kind of a "talent" for langauges, but only speak 2 1/2 languages (German, English, Spanish), so I wanted to try a "hard" language. Turns out, Chinese is not that hard in my opinion, however I fell in love with the language. (And it's a lot easier to learn Mandarin as a German native speaker, because there are way more similatities with German than English in Mandarin)

Well, Chinese Hanzi obviously take some time to learn (I wish there was a simplified version for every character) and many words sound very similar, which doesn't make it easy to remember them, but the grammar is very easy and syntax is kind of intuitive, especially for me as a software developer. Chinese is a bit like a programming language.
Regarding the similarities between Chinese and German, when I see Chinese lessons in English, I very often think "That would be some much easier to explain in German" (And especially in our Berlin vernacular, which breaks a lot of German grammar rules)
good bye = wiedersehen = 再见 (wieder = 再, sehen = 见). it's the same.
English has no words for 上午, in German it's "Vormittag" (before noon)
German has composite words like Chinese and a lot are very similar. The old German word for plane is "Flugmaschine" which literally means 飞机. Nowadays we say "Flugzeug", which translates to 飞东西.
The subtle difference between for example 咸 and 咸的 do not translate to English, but in German it's just 咸 = "salzig" and 咸的 = "salziges". And you cannot translate 我不能吃咸(的) to English without using the word "things", while there is no 东西 in the Chinese sentence. In German it's no problem to excatly express the same.
Well, that's all I can come up for now, but there are more similarities.
Oh and in Berlin we even have an equivalent to 吗, it's "wa" and sounds like "va" in English, so very similar to 吗 and used in the same way (While German does not have such a question marker)

Couple of questions. What style of
pronunciation will you be teaching? Are you teaching standard mandarin pronunciation or mandarin influenced by the Beijing accent? I can’t help to ask because I notice that amongst a lot of mandarin teachers from the north. Especially with sounds like shi zhi chi, a lot of people add this very strong r sound behind these sounds. You do it as well. Either or is fine, I’m just curious. Secondly what is your success rate with actually helping foreigners achieve fluency in mandarin? Not the “bottom of the barrel” we will accept because you’re a foreigner, but actual real fluency? Obviously it’s up to the student to really push to that level of fluency, however i do think it’s important to know if your methods had been effective.

What about if your native language has more tones than Mandarin but still struggle with Mandarin tones? I'm a native Cantonese speaker so I think I have a hard time with Mandarin because it's similar enough but also at the same time very very different.
Good question! Sometimes the similar things can be harder to distinguish! That's a really interesting topic to look into. I assume it's as hard when Mandarin speakers try to learn Cantonese tones! But if your native language is a tonal language, it should be a good thing for learning another tonal language.

Can you please make a video on word order and 思维？I and people I learn with often organize ideas in a non-Chinese way. People can generally understand, but it creates confusion sometimes.
I have never seen a video about this and this is so much needed. People say Chinese grammar is easy or simple but the reality is that our sentences are completely 老外. This language is very pragmatic and I guess part of the way of structuring sentences and ideas is just a habit Chinese imitate by massive exposure as they grow up, but I am sure some hints and patterns should be able to be explained to us.
That's a super important yet massive topic to talk about haha, because there are so many layers of it! But I've been thinking about it over past few years, and maybe I can put together a few points to make a video for you all at some point! Thank you for your suggestion👍
For sure! And there are more layers beyond grammar - if we are talking about sentence structures. Word selection, fixed phrases, and in general different language forms that different languages use to express the same concept, etc.. Very complicated topic. I'll see what I can do to put together a video at some point!
