SEGA made a rip off and it was a damn good one too!!! But Crusader of Centy and Neutopia were also fine rip offs that in my opinion were as good (or even better in some aspects) as Zelda.
While this may be a rip-off/clone, I find it one of the best Action Adventures' I've ever played and a true hidden gem. I'm glad Sega hid it in their 7th gen console retro releases.
Copying the door repair guys made me laugh, though. That's pretty extreme, even for a "Zelda-inspired" game. If I'd been in charge of this one, the player would have been able to switch between the three heroes of the first Golden Axe and use each one's unique abilities to progress. Some beast-riding definitely would have made it in, too. I feel like it was so busy cribbing from Zelda that it forgot to be a Golden Axe game.
Sega was always doing this on the Master System, if there was a popular, exclusive title on the NES, Sega would release something with similar gameplay. Zelda- Golden Axe Warrior/ Golvellius Ikari Warriors- Rambo First Blood 2 Super Mario Bros- Alex Kidd in Miracle World/ Wonder Boy Kung Fu- Vigilante/ Black Belt (Fist of the North Star) Rygar- Rastan (both were originally arcade games, Rygar became more of an action RPG on the NES) Nintendo would also do the same: Outrun- Rad Racer After Burner- Top Gun (NES also got After Burner through Tengen, Famicom got After Burner 2 in Japan) Space Harrier- 3D World Runner (Famicom also got Space Harrier) Choplifter- Cobra Command It was cool of Sega going the extra mile like that.
It was a great Zelda rip off. Really fun game and a good way to expand the franchise and get away from side scrolling. Too bad it didn't pay off in the long run. Golden Axe was an abused franchise.
I think they only did it was cause of the TurboGrafx made neutopia, also a Zelda clone ripoff. The clones only appeared cause the path Zelda took towards adventure of link.(not getting into that.) But cause of this, what did Nintendo do in 1992...you should check a "link to their past". Hehe
I did not play through the entire game, maybe half of it, but so far I thought it was a very legit title, including being based on Zelda 1, it does it blatantly / honestly, and it gives improvements like the houses to visit (not in actual Zelda 1). Generally graphics are more detailed and more colorful. It's probably the best game that's very similar to Zelda 1, and imo it's the best sequel to Zelda 1, better than any other game in the actual official Zelda series. :)
A friend of mine and I played through gold next warrior several years ago. In general I think it's an excellent game! Although 3 things I think kept it from being as great as Zelda. 1) the unfortunate fact that the master system controller only has two action buttons whereas the NES has two action buttons a start and a select. For the Master system that means you can only have one weapon equipped and the other button brings up your menu so if you're switching between bombs and a sword for example it's a lot more annoying than being able to have two weapons equipped like in Zelda. 2) the hit detection with your first sword is kind of rough to get used to and some of the weapons ranges are really short. Just took me out of the game a bit. 3) I thought the boss is in the dungeons were not quite as creative as in Zelda.
Back in the day I owned this and many other Master System games and this was by far my favorite. The game is awesome. Even made a hand drawn map of the in game map and also did a map showing for each screen what reward or penalty each secret stairwell gave. I was utterly hooked.
Amazing game, loved it so much, we didn't have nintendo here, but we had Sega, and this was my first introduction to this type of game. Until they released Zelda Ocarina of time on Megadrive.
I will say that this is one game that definitely earns it's value, in that it's a very competent & rare type of game to see on the system, not to mention being just rare period. I'm honestly a bit surprised that it's price hasn't gone up more than it already has, as it's been pretty steady in it's value for many years now & refuses to go up which is a bit surprising. Guess it's the Master System effect as it's quite the niche system with not a whole lot of fans. I just happen to be one of them tho, I absolutely LOVE the Master System! Such an underrated gem of a console!
When I first started watching this video I thought that it was the same version as the one on Game Gear "Golden Axe: Ax Battler". In that version you actually play as Ax Battler (hence the title) and it also features side scrolling sections as well as top down, ala Zelda 2. But after watching this video its apparent it's a completely different game altogether. So this is the first time I'm actually seeing this Master System game as it turns out.
It was a great, but hard game, so I cheated with a pro action replay where when I got down to 1 heart, use the code, and instant refill. Man I miss the older games! Try to use codes like that nowadays, and you face a severe lawsuit!
I played through this recently too. I was flipping through my master system library and thought it stood out.great video . Also I found a full on Zelda clone in the pc engine library as well . I can't recall it's name right now though .
Of all the crazy obscure games I've discovered-if even momentarily- the past few years with the 15,000 plus game Xbox or emulation stations I have on multi consoles/PC...I have to say I did NOT know about this strange Golden Axe offshoot. I guess I saw title and always assumed it was just an 8 bit port of GA to reach areas like Brazil that were still huge in Master System market. Pleasant surprise! Now off to ebay to see if the actual game is able to be bought- or if a second mortgage is necessary! edit: appears worse than you stated well over 200$, oh well, back to the good old Coin OPs!
In all fairness a load of Sega made games from the period were basically like off brand games you could get on the NES because the licensing agreements they had in place. Is the same as Masters of Darkness essentially being Castlevania on the Master System.
Nintendo is notorious for making a console with nothing but expensive gimmicks, and more recent, lawsuits! Did you hear about the most recent worthless lawsuit Nintendo just pulled? Yeah, they're suing a man that had a Nintendo 64 in the attic for $25! I kid you not! Nintendo had the nerves to say they sold it with a Mario on it, and it's destroying their vales, and they sold that system without their consent, lmmfao 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂! Look it up if you think this is a joke! Suing them for the same price as they sold the N64 at their own yard sale! If that's the case, they got millions of others to sue!
And even better you could almost say follow-up to Segas quest to ripping off Zelda is beyond Oasis it actually had huge sprites like it was so much more advanced honestly than a Link to the past but then again it and crusader of centy came out a lot
I got to play this gem via emulation. Sega released a Sonic Genesis/Megadrive collection on XB360, and a copy of the game us hidden on it. It's one of the worst unlockables I ever opened.
I agree that the music was not that good which was really a shame considering it's such an important part of these older games. You really do need some solid music to have that bit of extra draw. While the game is fun & quite competent it's no Zelda killer that's for sure.
Other people have mentioned Golvellius as being a Sega Master System game that was obviously inspired by Zelda (although, technically, Golvellius was a port of an MSX game). The Master System also had Aztec Adventure (Nazca '88: The Golden Road to Paradise in Japan), which was also a lot like Zelda except with CPU controlled allies. And, since it had the Nazca lines feature prominently, the English global title probably shouldn't have been "Aztec Adventure" since the North American country of Mexico, where the Aztec Empire was, is a long way from Peru in South America, home to the Nazca culture. Had they called it "Inca Adventure", it would have at least been in the right general part of the world.
Will you cover the Rushing Beat Trilogy sometime in the future? It's a Super Famicom/NES Beat'em up series that incorporate a Rage-like mechanic and each character have two different throws depending on you grabbing an enemy from the front or behind.
This game looks more like a snes game than a nes game. I remember master system as a kid but all of us kids thought of it as a knock off Nintendo. But it was so much better graphically now that I see it with adult eyes.
Hmm... Why this game is considered as a shameless rip-off when there's already other case of "inspired by an other game" that went quite fine ? Some example : - In 1991, there's already 2 episodes of Neutopia on PC-Engine. I guess it went fine if a 2nd episode exist. - Tiny Toon Adventures on NES : It's not only close to Super Mario Bros 3 but it also use some stolen code of that game ! You can't go closer than that in a copy without making a simple hack. - Countless of Fighting games made since Street Fighter 2. - Even Nintendo went into the clone wars : like a lot of company, they made a Pong machine called "Color TV-Game" in 1977. - And even case of rip-off game that totally eclipse the original game in a way most people would believe it's an original concept : "Angry Bird" over "Crush the castle", "Zuma" over "Puzz Loop", "Pong" over "Magnavox Tennis", "League of Legend" over "DOTA".
I find 'rip-off' to be a pretty meaningless insult when it is just as good if not even better than Zelda. I don't really see that accusation thrown at Warcraft for copying Dune, and if it is, it's likewise pointless.
I'd they'd mixed in a bit of Gauntlet with the multiple characters, it'd have fit better as an overhead Golden Axe and been more of its own unique thing.
This was so fun to play. I found it in the late 90's when i was heavily into emulation. The similarities to Zelda made it very funny , i remember with each new enemy or texture I would laugh and say "how on earth did they get away with this?" . Imagine Zelda with a new adventure 😆
A LOT of games are inspired by other games. Just because they are like them doesn't mean they're ripoffs, especially when they bring some new elements to the table. By that logic, Nintendo ripped off Sega when they made games like Super Mario Kart and Star Fox in 1992 & 1993 respectively that were clearly ripoffs of Power Drift (the first ever kart racer) and Galaxy Force II (a great chase view space shooter than not even the PS2 could port properly without releasing a gimped AGES 2500 version with fewer enemies & objects) which came out in 1989 & 1988 respectively. Sure Nintendo added their own characters to SMK along with turtle shells and other weapons, but the basic idea of a kart racing game on crazy tracks came from Power Drift. Same with Star Fox & how it ripped off Galaxy Force II but stood out with depth they added to it that wasn't in Galaxy Force II. I don't like using the word ripoff because those Nintendo games (along with Golden Axe Warrior) did bring some originality, but if you use it for one, you have to use it for all of them. It can also be said Nintendo ripped off Konami's Meikyuu Jiin Dababa (1987 FDS game) when they made Star Tropics in 1990. Before Super Mario Bros. in 1985, there were side scrolling platformers like Jump Bug (Hoei, 1981), Jungle King/Hunt (Taito, 1982), Ninja-kun Majou no Bouken (UPL, 1984), etc. As much as I love Wind Waker, it used that cel shading style of Sega's Jet Grind Radio. The Smash Bros series took a lot from Technos' 1992 Famicom game Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu (a multiplanar arena fighting Kunio game with 4 characters battling simultaneously). Games copying elements from one another is an important step in the evolution of games. If Nintendo didn't copy Meikyuu Jiin Dababa we would've never gotten Star Tropics 1 & 2 which are good games on their own. I wouldn't call any of them ripoffs, but like I said if one was to call one of these examples a ripoff, then Nintendo did a lot of ripping off of their own. The Zelda series itself copied elements from Hydlide. Sure Zelda 1 is a much better game, but it still copied many elements of Hydlide.
Do you think it's possible that the developers licensed the original Zelda engine from Nintendo to make this game? The fact that several tiles look and work exactly the same makes me wonder that.
No not possible in the slightest. Nintendo wouldn't have done that and back then it was much easier to copy certain aspects of a games look and feel since there were much less complicated aspects. There were really no such things as a game engine back then and the code was essentially written while making the games as well as the tools to put the assets in. It's not like now where there is a universal in house game engine developers use that they spent years working on or a universal engine like Unreal or Unity. They tended to use different tools then splice the code together separately later.
When you think about it, Nintendo abandoned the blueprint for legend of Zelda with Zelda II and wouldn't realise their mistake until 1991's A Link to the Past. Maybe Sega seen the potential in that game design that Nintendo didn't. And if i was a big fan of the first Zelda game at the time and felt the disappointment of Zelda II like a lot of fans probably did, I would have welcomed a game like Golden Axe Warrior and prayed for more clones.
This is actually one of those Zelda clones that I actually like and I consider it a hidden gem in terms of Master System games.
Uhhh name a zelda clone you don't like? I can't think of any I don't like myself.
@@SevenCompleted There was one I can think of and that was Spiritual Warfare on the NES which is a shitty Zelda clone based on the Bible.
Agreed. I didn’t even know this game existed until the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection on the PS3. Played it, and loved it.
@@PirateCanvas I wouldn't even call that one bad lol. It's not great but zelda is such a solid foundation it made it out not bad
Lol "hidden gem" its a 300 dollar game bruh
SEGA made a rip off and it was a damn good one too!!! But Crusader of Centy and Neutopia were also fine rip offs that in my opinion were as good (or even better in some aspects) as Zelda.
There was also Golvellius:Valley of Doom on the SMS.

I'm glad Sega hid it in their 7th gen console retro releases.
Golden axe warrior:a great game
As a SEGA fan dont ask me which was better
yeah dude you gotta decide. NOW!
Copying the door repair guys made me laugh, though. That's pretty extreme, even for a "Zelda-inspired" game.

That is an awesome idea!
Love the little Black Adder reference you snuck in. Now I have an image of Death Adder with Rowen Atkinson's face stuck in my head.
Golden Axe Warrior is unlockable to play in the PS3/360 Sega Megadrive: Ultimate Collection.
Yup, my thoughts exactly!👍
Oh, didn't know that.
I was personally hoping for a clone of the CDI game but this works too.
I like how the border during gameplay has Gilius peeking around the corner. 😅
For me who never had nes, this was a great game. You did not have sms when you grew up i guess. Much better graphics.
Also fun fact. Golden Axe Warrior is an unlockable bonus game in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on PS3 & Xbox 360.
Golvellius was a game I actually completed for the master system that was "zelda-inspired" 😆
I wish sega would re-release it. Just that it's considered a good game on its own and me being a zelda fan and wanting to play it 🤓
It's available on the X360 and PS3 on sega genesis ultimate collection as an unlockable.
Sega was always doing this on the Master System, if there was a popular, exclusive title on the NES, Sega would release something with similar gameplay.
Zelda- Golden Axe Warrior/ Golvellius
Ikari Warriors- Rambo First Blood 2
Super Mario Bros- Alex Kidd in Miracle World/ Wonder Boy
Kung Fu- Vigilante/ Black Belt (Fist of the North Star)
Rygar- Rastan (both were originally arcade games, Rygar became more of an action RPG on the NES)
Nintendo would also do the same:
Outrun- Rad Racer
After Burner- Top Gun (NES also got After Burner through
Tengen, Famicom got After Burner 2 in Japan)
Space Harrier- 3D World Runner (Famicom also got Space Harrier)
Choplifter- Cobra Command
It was cool of Sega going the extra mile like that.
I actually liked this better than _Legend Of Zelda_ . The graphics were better, there were plenty of NPCs, and more things to do.
That's fairly easy to do, 5 years after someone does all the hard work for you.
It was a great Zelda rip off. Really fun game and a good way to expand the franchise and get away from side scrolling. Too bad it didn't pay off in the long run. Golden Axe was an abused franchise.
Actually I had both, and I preferred golden axe warrior.
Same, and it's not even close!
I remember this great game :) also merry Xmas to you and lady decade, the ultimate retro gaming UA-cam power couple :) love you two!
GAW is pretty fun for a zelda clone. One that's not talked about much for a zelda clone is that bible one, Spiritual warfare...it's not half bad
Nahhhh that reminds me more of The Binding of Isaac
The game is available on several Sega compilation discs too.
Liiiiiiike?
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for 360 and PS3

I don't give a shit about how much of a "rip off" it is.
All I know is that it is an amazing game!
Also much better graphics than the original Zelda.
Seeing game footage slowdown is so jarring now that it doesn't typically happen in modern games. Flickering of sprites is weird too.
Yes, only few of us high and mighty individuals are truly smart and wise enough to do it right like you. LOL

I just don't understand why sega made this game for the master system and not the mega drive
seems strange for a first party title
Thank you for this gem. Never knew about it till now. Good job

This is an expensive cart to pick up today, but you can play it as an unlockable game on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
Still better than Zelda's Adventure on the CDi.
Of course it was shameless! Why would you be ashamed of a masterpiece!?
I wonder whether Sega pilfered any of the code routines from the Zelda ROM.
Great gam and it’s an unlockable game on the PS3 Genesis Collection too.
Nintendo made a rip-off of Hydlide.

There are so many NES and SMS games that could have been done on the ColecoVision....
Honestly, I kind of like this game. Played it on the Sonic Genesis Collection. Never finished it, but it's certainly fun enough.
I still own this game. Ironically, I loved it when I was younger as it was so similar as Zelda and never though of it as a rip off then.
Well, I suppose all inspiration comes from somewhere…what do you get if you mix the likes of Atic Atac, Sabre Wulf & Tolkien? Right…Zelda 😅😉
This game actually looks better and more fun than the original Zelda.
Great review and love still learning from your channel all these years since I started watching!

I really enjoyed playing this as a kid. Rather than make fun of it, is there anything about it that is actually better or worse than Zelda?
So in other words, it's Zelda but with better graphics and a greater color pallette.

It's a fun clickable video title.
Ax battler on game gear rips off zelda 2 too. I'm surprised you didn't mention it.
i totally knew nothing about this game it looks very fun tbh

Just played it. It's MUCH better than original Zelda.
I disagree about the music. The music is really awesome actually.
5:53 Never thought this would be a sentence I'd write. But...wow, JK Rowling ripped off the plot from Golden Axe Warrior haha. Gawdamn.
So you insult people for how they spend their money! 🙌 splendid!
I played this before Zelda...is a big game big sound track too
It has nothing on holy warfare
it could've been amazing, and could've helped the series, if it wasn't so focused on being like Zelda, it seems
Truth only THGM is willing to share: kicking little people automatically makes a game fun.
