  • The pursuit to hunt chukar partridge in Hells Canyon is not your everyday bird hunting experience. Yet this public lands bird hunt is in the reach of all of us.
Anthony Ferro is a passionate bird hunter and bird dog owner. With her German shorthaired pointers, he journeys 2000 miles to the unknown terrain of Hells Canyon for his first change at bord hunting chukar. From Hungarian partridge to the humble failures of a DIY bird hunt, Anthony's passion shines through in this short inspiring film by Project Upland.

You have perfectly synopsized chukar hunting. Each bird harvested is a trophy, and hunters must suffer to appreciate the wildness of these birds. Well done as always!

The message is extremely relatable and accurately describes a large majority of bird hunters. I need to put Hell's Canyon on the list.

Here is how I described this film to the friends and family I sent it to:
‘When you guys have 8 minutes to take this in, do it. It goes a long way to help explain and understand why we do what we do. I was drawn in w the opening line.’

Amazing how different shooting is in America in comparison to the uk, I go partridge shooting most weeks we’ll shoot 100+ birds in a few hours, in traditional driven style shooting we have here. But I can still totally appreciate the fun in walked up style of hunting you guys do

Awesome, ive always been drawn to pheasants all my life. So, to hear the keep going is real relatable. I was introduced to my first gsh female puppy at a sportsmen for wildlife banquet. Live action , acholol, and a lively crowd. Abby became my 750 dollars hangover, best thing ever happened. Nothing is more pleasing than hunting with a smart upland bird dog. I'm hooked for life.

Spent 4 years at Mountain Home AFB. Chased Chukars up and down the canyons and never got one because I did not have a dog. (And I missed a lot)
Now I'm 62 and want to go back. I have a new Britt pup and I feel that we would have a chance to have a good bird dinner together. But the body is not as young as I was in 1984.
Hope I don't drop dead in the mountains while chasing those ridiculous birds!

Beautiful video. I grew up hunting with upland bird dogs in the 70s-80s on wild birds. I took a hiatus for some years had some wetland dogs. The allure of upland hunting is so very different... I felt a strong desire to have that walk in the woods and fields with my dog again so I now have Barolo a year old English Setter. Upland has an elegance that is hard for others to understand until they have seen a dog really working then holding point as you walk up to flush. Nothing like it! It’s great when you get some birds but also still fairly great when you don’t .

just watched the video this AM and read about your story: I hope you are well, I hope you are with a new puppy, enjoying the fields and feathers of Autumn. I had to put down my dog this past summer due to cancer, hardest thing I have ever done in my 46 years of life. All dogs go to heaven and yours are there chasing those pheasants, quail, huns, chukars all day everyday.

most people don't have it in them for chukar hunting anyways... seems like they're always right at the top, and after a long steep hike with a heavy shotgun if you finally bust a covey and then miss your shots because you were out of breath and didn't have your gun ready, it can be pretty disheartening hahah (you might be able to tell I'm talking from personal experience lol but I still love it)

I saw fences in the back ground of some shots in this video and the rolling hills were much gentler than many of the videos where chukars are being hunted on public land. I'm thinking most of this was shot on private land maybe not directly on Hell's Canyon. Would like to know where this is as the land shown would be easy walking.

This is a beautiful video. I had the pleasure of meeting Anthony a few years ago, and his energy and passion strikes me as something that spreads with anyone that is around him at the time. Just recently, the home he was in was involved in a total loss fire. Along with the total loss, he has lost one of his best buddies, his dog Radar, and his other Dog Gnarly is holding on, but sustained major injuries from the fire as well.
