A nice anecdote about Big Boss’ tenure so far is about how he changed the culture of the team. Before he got there, right fielder Chusei Mannami was actually being bullied by some of the more “veteran” teammates. Saying things like how his mouth guard smelled bad and how he was too tanned (it’s worth pointing out that Mannami is half-Japanese half-Congolese, which many speculate why the then 19-20 year old was the main person being targeted in the bullying). Shinjo helped boot those guys out of the club, at least the main “ringleaders”, and helped instill some confidence in Mannami, and now he’s an all-star with an arm that’s being compared to *Ichiro*
Japan is so ridiculously fundamentally racist as a society it's kind of nuts. 🤷 If you're a westerner who lives in a multi-cultural society it can be seriously shocking to discover just how blase they are as a people about Japanese supremacism being the societal default.
Big Boss proves you don’t need logic to win, just vibes and chaos. Maybe MLB managers should take notes hovercrafts and Fortnite jerseys might be the future of baseball.
One thing you have to be aware of. Nippon-Ham was in the midst of horrible, horrible stretch of period where they're the worst team in NPB, almost akin to White Sox and Seibu Lions this season, with roster full of young unproven prospect and mid level veteran, not to add a horrible clubhouse culture with bullying and such. The attendance was dwindling and media scrutinised every move of the player did. All his antic was calculated to distract the fans and media from harassing and scrutinise his players and still gaining interest of media and selling ticket for the game "To see what Shinjo would do next". On baseball side of things, he did a chance for every young player to be part of the lineup for their development and skills. The first 3 season of his tenure is all about him, not the team. You'd notice that this season when the player like Kotaro Kiyomiya and Chusei Mannami gaining the "all star" level recognition, the team finally went to Climax Series and in the Championship Series, he's "mellowed" out considerably and let the baseball do the talking
Yeah he might be a bit of a goofball but his management is actually one of the best in the NPB since all he had to do was not pretend it's the 80s and utilize analytics.
The interesting NPB tradition is that many of their former stars come back as a head coach. Shinjo earned MLB salary once. He doesn't need to take the job receiving all criticisms and humiliations being as a coach.
Shinjo is like a mirror version of Kuriyama. Both excel at making their players believe in themselves, but both do it in very different ways. While I don't gel with their strategic choices often - I feel blessed the Fighters have had both Shinjo and Kuriyama at the helm.
Adding some background info: Shinjo’s somewhat atrocious behavior has been going on since he was a position player but the key thing is he knows what he is doing. It is mostly pure performance. Also Shinjo’s manager during his tenure with the Hanshin Tigers was Katsuya Nomura, one of the pioneers in data-driven baseball in Japan
One of my earliest memory of watching baseball is he winning the 2006 Nippon Series. The funny shite is if he plays LF/CF instead of Bonds (former) and Lofton (latter), SFG could broke the Curse of Coogan's Bluff earlier. Shinjo, by the time, is the best defender out of the three. Plus NPB had a tie game rule goes to Postseason.
The Fighters liking Shinjo is an understatement. Back when he was an active player and playing for them he did all sorts of antics that the fans loved like having teammates wear wrestling masks with him or persuading his teammate to cosplay as Piccolo at the All Star Game (also the Fighters were in the midst of the Darvish era and really good). As a result the Fighters took off in popularity and so too did the Pacific League which started to attract more fans away from the Central League. Go Rockies.
another insane thing he did this year was to go on the field in a hanshin tigers uniform against the tigers at they were his former team before jumping to mlb

I remember him from when I was a kid. He played for the Mets, then he got traded to my Giants. :)

I just remembered him as the guy who used to jump up and down before catching a fly ball as a Met like 20 years back. Who knew?

Is the H in his name silent? I thought I remembered Mets broadcasts as a kid calling him Shin-Joe
The hovercraft thing is really insane.
I’d love to see that live.
Metal Gear Solid has the only Big Boss I know. But this man ia a close 2nd.
HOKKAIDO NIPPON-HAM FIGHTERS LEGEND SHINJO TSUYOSHI
also at 5:35 i actually own that uniform!
big boss is awesome. dripped out of his mind too.
Yea, as a boomer I agree
Japanese baseball is absolutely bonkers and I love it. I would watch it more often if not for the time difference here in the US.
Sometimes the best thing for a rebuilding team is a manager/coach who can be a lightning rod for the media. Shinjo is certainly that and then some.
Well if it doesn't work out maybe he can join new Japan wrestling
I had that guy's Topps rookie card.
Jesus Christ he’s too much
Lol, i knew it would be about this guy and his hobercraft before i even clicked. They take it serious over there.

"No one hears a word they say"
Shinjo is a legend I remember my family talking about him and his strange ways growing up.
