Alright, the wording everywhere is terrible. Destiny does not use the word Battle Pass, I used it because I thought it would be simpler to compare to other games. Destiny going forward will use Season/Season Pass/Season Rank I guess as its terminology? Destiny Battle Pass = Season Pass or Seasonal Ranks
When you buy Season of the Undying, you also get the Season Pass portion of that content. You are not buying Season of the Undying and then also the Season Pass. The Seasonal Ranks are a part of the Season. And then next season, Season of Dawn, you'll buy that one and that will come with Season of Dawn's Season Ranks.
Datto I really don't mind the battle pass style hopefully all the cool cosmetics can be earned rather than hopping you get good rng from bright engrams
how do you know what side of the pass is premium and what side isn't? just curious since I've seen videos claiming the opposite of what you said is the premium side

Datto what your not mentioning here is that exotic engram is definitely not gonna be a fixed drop its gonna be rng, it could be a cold fart for some poor bastard out there, also on the free pass it has all the same awards just further up the bracket, F2P will simply have a longer grind. Paying for. Things at the end of the season is perfectly fine, their ultimatley vanity items and doesn't affect anyone, especially since the armor and guns will be inferior to their rng counterparts.

@@RichterfanReborn89 Actually, it was a completely separate exotic you received through the postmaster. Granted, you had to complete that quest for it to be actually useful, but it wasn't an ornament.
I remember I couldn’t afford the battle pass at the time so I didn’t get the cold heart so I couldn’t cheese raid so I didn’t get max raid armor or be able to join raid groups cause “mandatory cold heart” groups are annoying as hell
@@rijsmiddel8765 Sure, fine, it wasn't just handed out. It was still ridiculously easy to get by current Exotic Quest standards. It's something they wanted in the hands of players, much like this and the half-dozen you get just by running three characters through the Red War arc.

Reasons I'm mad (but not really 'mad,' more like 'concerned'): 1.) Basically selling exotics is getting awfully close to "Pay to Win."
2.) Making exotics unavailable after a season ends, but having them become purchasable, opens up a lot of avenues for not-good business. Such as:
A.) Lowering the drop rates for the newest exotics, in order to 'incentivize' players to finally buy them with real money, so they don't 'miss out'.
B.) Opening the door for a literal 'Pay to Win' scenario, depending on how good certain exotics may be (imagine what it would be like if Jotunn, Last Word, Ace of Spades and other big PvP weapons had been purchasable).
C.) It essentially makes Destiny's game-play go from "Grind for Gear" to "Pay for Gear," which just means that there becomes less and less point to play.
3.) While i do understand that without Activision paying the bills/overhead every month, Bungie needs to find ways to keep the lights on, I can't help but look back at the past of Destiny 2 and remember things like the "EXP Throttling" controversy that came to light.
Who's to say that Bungie doesn't decide to try and sneak that mechanic back in, in order to slow down the rate at which someone gains levels? Or as I mentioned before, who's to say they don't tweak the drop-rates for certain exotics? "If we bump up the rate of Exotic-Drops on Year-1 and Forsaken Exotics by another 10%, and lower the Drop-Rate for the newest exotics by 15%, no one will be the wiser."
Before you know it, you're in the last week of the Season, and you haven't gotten that one exotic you've been DYING to get. But suddenly, there it is. Sitting in the eververse store, for only 2000 Silver...
I'll tell you right now Datto, I didn't get my first actual Gjallahorn Drop in D1 until LITERALLY 8 hours before "The Taken King" dropped... And you know what that means. It means that when TTK dropped, my Gjallahorn became worthless. And I can't tell you the NIGHTMARE of a time it used to be, trying to get into LFG Raids without Gjallahorn...
If I could have spent $7 in real money and gotten a Gjallahorn back when Crota's End dropped, I would have done it in a heartbeat, because ALL I used to hear was, "If you don't have Gjallahorn, don't bother asking." I couldn't find a full Raid Team to do Crota's end for almost a month after it released.
If Bungie can artificially recreate that kind of a scenario, and then offer players the 'Easy-Fix' of, 'Spend 2000 Silver and you can have one too.' People will buy it. I know they will, because I would have. And that's what primarily worries me about this new approach they're taking.
xXImikoXx both the free and paid path are able to get exactly the same thing, free just takes longer. They released the full battle pass on bungie.net, look at it, they are all engrams.

I really do not like the battle pass feature, I show my support for Bungie for buying Silver, getting new speeders and other stuff, and the DLCs of course. NOT battle passes and locking loot out of the game.

I believe that a lot of content creators and extreme play-time/extreme efficiency players forget to take into account the volume of content and how it can be consumed by the average player. I am in an active clan that plays together regularly and I play every day for 2-4 hours (Husband, father of two), mostly just one character (Titan). I'm a content release behind in terms of content. I barely touched the Forges during Black Armory, because I was still working on Dreaming City/Last Wish/Eggs/Cursebreaker. I barely touched Gambit Prime and Reckoning during Season of the Drifter, because I was busy farming forges for the weapons I didn't get to farm during the Black Armory. I've spent the majority of this season working on Reckoning and Gambit Prime and didn't plan to do much Menagerie farming until after Shadowkeep launched. And I 100% believe I represent 40%-50% of the player base if not more.
Content creators and extreme play-time players are able to burn through every seasons content with time to spare, but the majority of the player base cannot. This is, in part, due to the limited seasonal events that interrupt the main content. FOMO comes into play for us because we get delayed on the main content to not feel left out of the seasonal events which are limited time. I had to stop grinding Forsaken content to farm souls in the Haunted Forest and this pushed the Forsaken content into Black Armory. I then had to stop playing both Forsaken and Black Armory content to play the Dawning and bake cookies. Finally I was able to finish Forsaken content in time for Crimson Days and I began Black Armory at the end of the season. This cycle continues each season with each seasonal event.
Datto, you're a national treasure, but you're crazy if you don't think the majority of the player base really engages with the content after the season is over. Destiny's content release schedule is designed for the super player, not for the average player and most of us can't keep up.

I believe you put better into words what I would have wanted to say as well. I would be really pissed if they would remove the seasonal events. I managed to play all the Forges, but I didn't even touch the Reckoning yet and I only did 4 Menagerie runs all season. FOMO is making me really paranoid about how much time I should allocate to the game, as I can't possibly play all day long. And balancing between the game, other games, social life and University studies, doesn't allow me to consume all the content in a timely manner. BUT that doesn't mean I don't want to experience what I paid for, so I have to know that if I will go and play today, tomorrow, next week, month or year, the content will still be there for me to experience. Yeah, I don't really like the "You had to be there to experience it." mentality.

It's XP based, the only cheese you could really do is leave forges running overnight to generate xp. Even then you only get a bright engrams every like 2 days of running that so it won't have a big impact.

Gage Pedersen the point of a battle pass is to force you to do one of two things. Either A: spend a lot of time playing the game to earn the rewards or B: pay extra money to get the rewards. Bungie wasn’t making enough money off people simply wanting to play destiny....so this was the answer
@@ricekrispy6310 except we have no clue as to how long it will take to complete the pass, and you cant spend money on it til the end of the season. this, as stated, is to make sure no one feels like there a day where they got nothing done because they didnt have enough time to play.
@@theurbanreanimator7244 and if take a look at the example that Bungie gave for time needed for one level, well I will be free for a month when shadowkeep drops(taking time off frm work) and will have 6-7 hours of gameplay time per day, most of the regular and hardcore players already play that much per day for a couple of weeks when a new expansion is dropped. I can easily guess that it will take me maximum of 2 weeks to reach lvl 100. Way less if did stuff efficiently.
Reminds me of when eververse was first introduced, at the time not a huge problem, but a few years later it became one. Hopefully, the season pass doesn't follow the same trend. Hopefully.

Tbh, I've just started a break from gaming and seeing a bunch of content come up that is entirely based on FOMO and seeing just leaves me exhausted. Between Destiny 2 and warframe, this stuff just piles up and leaves me not wanting to come back. It makes sense and I totally get it from a dev point of view, but I just go 'nah I'm good'. A bit burnt out from Solstice and figure my time is more useful elsewhere and it doesn't feel good to play a games content because of the anxiety of missing out, rather than 'oh this looks cool, I will really enjoy this'. In short, want to play for the joy of it, instead of, oh if I don't grind this, I'll miss out or have to wait'

100% agree with you. That's why I moved over to MHW mostly since they keep adding new monster AND tweek the older ones to keep em up to date 👍🏻 no FOMO content just keeps pilling up.
@@Atypical_Typo Yeah as a long time MH Fan, Capcom did amazingly well with how content is handled in MHW. New Event quests and if you missed out on a event quest or didn't get to farm it enough, it comes back relatively quickly. Even then, theres always another quest or hunt you can that you might have skipped that can hold you over in the meantime. And Iceborne looks like it's going to be amazing for World, especially since we have Master Rank (G Rank) again.

The battle/season pass doesn't even seem bad. It's just guaranteed rewards for XP leveling instead of bland old bright engrams. It's finally a reason to do activities that give lots of XP like strikes, crucible and vanguard bounties.

The big problem is the premium pass, and how that is way easier to get loot and exotics from.

If you didn't buy the Annual Pass, you missed out on TLW. How's this any different? People who don't buy the season don't get the content. It's how it's always been. Actually, this battle pass DOES allow people who don't buy the season to earn exotics and legendary gear. So yeah
@@11ducksinatrenchcoat76 because it's better to have to play 1000 hours to get an exotic that never drops ? Here you play you're guaranteed to have something valuable for your grind. I find it fair. And once again regular players who are committed will get the pass and the extension because destiny is their main game by far - considering how engaged you should be. I don't see anything wrong in the fact that non regular people don't get the best items from a MMO game that requires by nature to play a lot.
From my point of view, the whole getting butt hurt about someone buying the last few ranks or any ranks of the pass is kind of a stupid reason to get butt hurt. If I drink a lot of coffee and I get a free coffee after buying 10 of them and then the guy next to me who didn't buy 10 cups of coffee gets one by paying for it, then who cares? The whole point of the season pass thing is to reward players that play the game. It's like icing on a cake. I'm going to be playing the game anyway so why not have something to look forward to? If they can't purchase the ranks until the end of the season, then so be it. I am positive that the people that play a lot will have the ranks completed within the first week or two anyway and then these poor schleps will still have to wait like 6 to 8 weeks before they can even purchase the ranks.
And Bungie needs to make some money. I have 0 qualms with spending money on games. At 10 bucks a season, it's a bargain. I can spend a helluva lot more going to the movies for something that lasts 2ish hours. 10 bucks for 10 weeks of content? Sure. Sign me up.
I completely agree on the exotics. I'm a player that literally only uses an exotic if I've earned it per guardian so I don't over use it. Thanks for the update datto!
Looks like eriana's vow has been added due to the new shield mechanic that is present, means that if you have the new season you get an advantage on getting a barrier breaking weapon as opposed to having to wait/grind for one. doesnt seem to be that bad of an idea given the latest info released now

What I like about this is that its included with Shadowkeep. Its not something you have to buy as well as shadowkeep, so its basically another incentive to get you to buy shadowkeep as it offers you more rewards so im down with it

Its included in every season and if you sunk your money into the digital collectors edition of shadowkeep you get all 4 seasons. It's actually cheaper to buy these new seasons than it was to get forsaken and the annual pass last year. I only see good things with what's coming. I payed my money and will be sinking a ton of time into the dlc. What do I care if john doe bought the last 50 tiers 2 weeks before the seasons up because he couldn't put in the time. Good for him!

Sure give people the ability to buy it with real money anyway because no everyone has the time or patience to grind the game out to earn said loot, this battle pass with basically give us what i have always wanted in the game. People who get angry at this are just acting out impulsively and not thinking before speaking out. This brings nothing but positive things for the game, thats it.
I think people here the term "Battle Pass" and instantly compare Destiny 2 to a game like Apex or Fortnite, the two games that made the "Battle Pass" a known thing so people just automatically think Destiny is becoming like those other games, and it isn't, they just need to stop and think for a moment before slamming Bungie.
@@LordRedfern I appreciate what Datto is doing. He has a platform where he can speak his mind and create a discussion center for everyone, but none of us know how the pass is truly laid out. I think it's a but presumptuous to think it's just going to burn itself to the ground. What I see is a visual path to obtaining cool loot. Maybe I'm not jaded because I dont play fortnite or apex much, but I'm beyond hyped for the changes to everything.

I was finally able to complete a volundr forge after completing the power surge and some powerful rewards in the drifter season. Menagerie was live by the time I unlocked Izanami forge on all characters

Yeah, and I remember lots of people saying it wasn't a big deal because they were super hyped for the game. Some actually got upset at me for saying it was a bit sketchy that you'd get a guaranteed exotic for preordering while everyone else had to pray for RNGesus or wait for xur (I believe the first time he sold it was the following March).

I don't think this has anything to do with replacing lootboxes or bright engrams. Bright engrams have already almost been completely pushed out of Destiny now that direct purchases are a thing in the eververse store. It seems like the battle pass is just a way for casual players to feel like they're making progress toward something everytime they log on.

On the exotics: From what I am reading, the hand cannon will just be given to you depending on your rank, but you will get it much quicker if you pay for the season. The bow will not just be an exotic that is handed to players but an exotic QUEST that will be only be available to players who buy the pass, so you will still need to do SOMETHING for it.
I got pissed at first about the battle pass but as long as it’s a side thing that’s included with the season purchase then I don’t mind. It’s basically extra content along with all of the other endgame stuff we usually get. Also you can’t buy your way through until the end of the season, making the grind more valuable to the player. By the time the season ends nobody will be playing destiny as much, that’s when all the other players lagging behind can buy their way up if they want. If you don’t manage to get the exotics/legendary’s offered in the pass, it will go to next season in a different way to earn.
All of the gear you earn in the premium pass is also manageable to get in the standard pass. Ex: premium players unlocks exotic gun in tier 1 meanwhile standard will take tier 25 to unlock. Thus still allowing all players to gain access to these unlocks without a paywall, it will take a longer, reasonable amount of time for standard users. That’s perfectly a reasonable amount, it’s also not the main focus of the game. If you keep playing whatever you do in D2, you’ll get to tier 100 in no time. It was said that leveling 10 tiers takes an average of 8 hours, and of-course players will find ways to level up faster

Without each season pass you cant get the new activity where you can farm and obtain the new gear ( armor and weapons). At the same time without the season pass, you only get the free samples of that gear from the free way of the battle pass or w/e you Wana call it.

Not a big deal if they are going FTP. More methods of monetization are bound to be added since the entry cost is removed. -Another point is people that own the SEASON Pass shadowkeep get the premium for all the seasons. Its not another form of monetization, just incentive for FTP players to upgrade. Smart plan by them.
Shadowkeep is a fully priced expansion. They’re not going F2P fully.

The intent of the battle pass isn’t to make money. It’s just a predictable reward path. Sure, you’ll be able to buy ranks eventually, but that’s to catch up, not to get ahead of other players. There’s no P2W monetisation here.

I mean, exotics and legendaries have ALWAYS been locked to purchasing whatever season they where sold in. If you where already a hardcore player nothing changes except you have a more constant view of what your rewards are going to be.

It's worth noting that the exotic weapon isn't granted for just buying the season pass since free players who don't have the season pass will get the weapon in their reward track, too. In other words, it's being given to everyone for free no matter what.

I was also trying to be mad at the “battle” pass thing but I realized that this is bungie interpreting something that’s been asked for.
A way to grind out cool cosmetics in game and not through eververse.
What I had imagined was just making these things drop from activities as usual which would eventually crowd the loot pools, potentially. I never thought they would do a pass ranking system like this and I think this will probably work fairly well. It works in other games but none of those other games, to my knowledge, are looters like destiny.
I’m cautiously optimistic but I don’t hate the effort or direction even though I wanted to. Trying not to be part of the internet hate everything trend.
Edit: agree with the take on the exotic and what that can potentially turn into. Slippery slope. Would rather have that reward replaced by more exotic ornaments.
Yea, imo is particularly good because if you play a lot (or pvp, since there is loot except few weapons) you have still things to achieve even after months that the dlc/expansion is released. I hope that in the free pass "stops" at 50/60 levels, because for somebody that play for fun, so maybe he didn't buy the dlc, grinding to lv100 would be too much (with this I mean that they should took the loot they would put in 100lvs and crunch it into 50/60/70 lvs)

I quit destiny 2 a few months after it came out, therefore I bought no DLC past forsaken (I don’t have forsaken either). When I came back, I’m literally limited to 350 max light and limited weapons. No access to thorn, last word, lumina, raid weapons, recluse, mountain top etc. So yes, it’s already like that.
i loved that they made the rotation of activities, Path of exile uses this and has been pretty sucessful considering where it comes from. I jumped back in now with new light and I already have a shit ton of activities available that I know i wont even touch

It is a battlepass included with your purchase on top of being in a game where you already grind for days so it might as well just be a "here have extra shit" grind
I think it really is more of a replacement system for the old ‘get a bright engram when you level up’, and it seems like, cosmetically, it complements the Eververse changes. I’m curious to see how having actual weapons in it shakes things up, but I also feel it isn’t too different from say, PlayStation getting Borealis or Wavesplitter as exclusives. So we will see, I guess

So no options to get all seasons in one purchase? I bought the standard shadowkeep so my only choice is to get the rest individually or at once.
Sounds like delta scaling might be bumping up to +/-100 (its currently +/-50), which makes power level increases from the artifact more meaningful. So if you have an activity that is set at 900 power, you won't max out until 1,000 power, for example.
I'm a hardcore player and I'm fine with the pass being a thing. the past few years i've only really been playing destiny so i haven't really experienced any other battle passes, so i don't have much to go off of, but I'm just not ok with some of the stuff you get on rank 1 being handed to me.. I really enjoy working towards getting something and getting that feeling of "I worked my butt off to get this" rather than the opposite. last season i grinded a ton to get Stronghold since it was the last exotic i needed for my collection and you wouldn't believe how loud the "YEEEEEEEESSSSSS" i screamed was when i got it early into this season. It felt so good getting that and Peregrine Greaves so close together.
Either way i'm exited to see how year 3 is going to shape up. so far it's looking to be a ton of fun. :)

Yeah I think a lot of people are over reacting. But I agree, I wish I wasn't getting stuff at rank 1. I can see it being a little earlier, or just some extra materials along the way, but I want to earn stuff regardless of the season. I'mbuying the pass to play the content, not get free stuff.

i'm gonna be honest i'm fine with bungie selling the battle pass tiers just because now that they're a solo studio they need the money more than ever to keep producing quality content like forsaken. Why? It’s just seasonal activities. Solstice is gone and I never got the armor, oh well. Veridian forest is gone, haunted forest, Halloween thing is gone also. Never got horror story. I accept these things and I don’t really care. I don’t mess with blind well or forges unless it’s for powerful gear, level up. I like the idea of shit being here once and gone another. Makes shit feel exclusive. Like in WoW, love having shit other players can no longer get. Let’s just accept seasonal activities have been going away, bungie simply could’ve not mentioned it and we would’ve viewed it as we do with the activities I just mentioned.
Since the changes to Menagerie I haven't been in once. However! During Jokers Wild I didn't touch Reckoning & barely played Gambit Prime. I completed my 1st Tier2 Reckoning TODAY on my Titan, haven't on my other Guardians yet. I quite enjoy playing Prime currently, I guess I'm not taking it super serious, but once I complete Tier3 & I have a full set of Armour with decent Perks I'll probably jump into Prime a bit with the full Armour Set & Flex a bit lol. I still occasionally do the odd Forge for Augmented Dreaming City Weapons & Blind Well searching for Enhanced Armour Perks. Still haven't completed any Raids -_____- But I've got a fair bit of Leviathan & Last Wish loot.

xur literally gives you exotics. overall, im cool with this layout. lets give it a season to see how it goes
Xur started to sell forsaken exotic months later its launch. By that time, most people got what they want and there were new exotics to chase that were not sold by xur. The loop of destiny is that new powerful stuffs should first be earned through challenges and grind then gradually become accessible. Directly awarding a new exotics on purchase does break this loop.
