Thank you for this video. My 1.5 yr old black lab has severe dysplasia in both hips and needs THR surgery. I'm terrified. Seeing videos documenting other dogs' journeys eases my anxiety.
Thank you so much for Ing and posting this video. We have a new rescue dog in a similar situation and we are evaluating the two surgical options. This is very helpful.
Thank you ...thank you. We're in the early stages of preparing for this. We have no orthopedic surgeons in RI. Your video was very helpful. It's now finding the right surgeon for this.
Thank you for posting this. We are six days into my Echo's THR. It's a nervous day for me because it seems like she doesn't want to use her leg too much today. I think maybe we over did it yesterday, taking her outside too much. I hope that is what it is. She is not wanting to put a whole lot of weight on it but then she uses it just fine. I am wondering if you had days like this. I know every dog is going to be different. This is such a nerve wracking thing to have to go through.
Just thought I would comment on my previous comment. Echo is using her leg more today. I think we had just over done it a couple of days ago with too many bathroom trips/walks. Thanks again for posting this. It is good to see how well Kiva did after the surgery.
Wow! What. a wonderful story and presentation! I am in love with Kiva! She is so beautiful and brave and happy! You did such a great job in all regards: rescuing her, caring for her, and making the big decision to go through with the THR. She just looks so happy. I wish all dog owners could see how you did EVERYTHING 100% perfectly! Thank you for posting this amazing video. Hope to hear more about Kiva's progress! I have a dog with hip dysplasia too and am considering surgery for her too. I want to see her happy again; she use to swim and run and chase balls...I can see she is very sad she drags herself across the ground and it really breaks my heart. I bought the Walking Wheels but it's only temporary.... I will seriously look into this surgery so she has her life back again. You showed us it can be done! There is hope! Thank you. Blessings to you and Kiva!
That price is such a scam. Literally, my girl had the same surgery 8yrs ago and it was only $800. Inflation ain't that bad that it requires over 10x the cost from 8yrs ago. Horrible.
I agree, vets look at health care as a proxy to charge more (in USA). Personally, I think doctors should be paid as skilled labor and not top dollar for minimal labor or work. I think AI is going to change medical.
Example - What if other industries charged like healthcare? Nails in are important in 2x4 house construction. Maybe builders should charge $2 per nail... add $10,000 to $40,000 to the cost of framing.... after all it takes DAYS to build and engineering design is involved.
Hi ! Just stumbled upon your story. Our Belgian malinois is having the same surgery tomorrow at the same place ! Thank you for sharing this, as you’ve answered a lot of our questions and also gave us hope :) I am so nervous for my girl as she is 3 yo and extremely active , similar to Kiva. I hope Kiva continues to progress and I hope she is just as happy as she was prior !
Hi Jennifer! We loved VRC! I hope your experience is as good as ours was. So glad Kiva's journey helped answer some questions. Good to hear! :) Best of luck with your Belgian Malinois. (Post an update if you get a chance!) Cheers!
So happy to see her walking so well! Thank you for making this video! It alleviated me so much. My 2 year old boxer girl penny is having THR surgery next month and your video helped us know what to expect more or less, definitely making a medication calendar! Do you have any templates you used?
Thank you so much for sharing this incredible journey. Our dog had his surgery yesterday, and we are on our way to pick him up. Wish us luck and pray for his total recovery. It brings a lot of hope watching Kiva and her successful healing. Thank you once again. Wishing you and yours many more happy walks, fun play, and unconditional ❤️
Would you recommend this for older dogs too? I have a nine year old husky/German shepherd and she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. I want to protect her from suffering into her senior years.
Hey Mindy, we also have a German/Husky mix. He is going through this in January just before his 8th birthday. His hip dysplasia was identified after an injury. Prior to his injury, he was very active walking or running regularly.
Hi Mindy! That's a great question for your veterinarian. Your vet would likely make that call based on a thorough physical, new X-rays, and current blood work. Your vet may also discuss non-surgical options like meds and/or PT. Best wishes for a good outcome!
@@Camille719 Hi Camille52, yes he did get the surgery 7 weeks ago and he's doing great! He's got 5 more weeks of restriction to his pen but we get him out quite a bit and take him around the back yard and short walks about ten minutes or so out front. If we would let him, he'd be trying to run. I think he's having an easier time getting up from the ground vs. pre surgery and he's been off his pain meds for a couple weeks now. Other than his hair still growing back, no one would be able to tell he had surgery by the way he acts. For reference, he's a 95lb dog so he's a pretty big boy. The restriction has been the most difficult part in my mind.
@@stevehinkebein3715 that is great news that your dog is doing well. Our dog is 74 lbs (Ridgeback mix) and at 8 years old I will be interested to get the surgeons feedback on our visit at the end of March. For the most part our dog is managing ok on most days with his FHO and development of arthritis. We have meds for when the pain hits him but it is encouraging to hear that your dog made it through the surgery and part way of the recovery without incident.
We have a Houston rescue that looks like this and had a FHO at the age of 2. Now he is 8 and has severe arthritis and we are waiting to get in to see a surgeon in 5 weeks. On top of that we found multiple BB’s embedded in his thigh. What is wrong with the people that they would do this to a helpless dog?

BBs! That's awful. Sending hope for a good outcome regarding the arthritis!
Cost?
With additional follow-up visits, etc. about $12k-$13k. We have Embrace Pet Insurance (link in bio). That helped. A LOT.
Did my embrace actually pay 90% minus $1000?
It's 1000 deductible per year then 90% of the vet costs.
