You weren't far off with the split Vs tap. Splits happen with humbuckers and make only one of the coils active, giving a single coil sound. A tap is where you go into the winds of a coil and pull an output before the full amount of winds. So you might be able to tap a coil at half of the winds, which will give a lower output sound.
The issue is that tap and split seem to be used interchangeably, so it gets confusing for many. Chances are, more often than not, it's a split you're looking at. Tapping pickups seems to be quite rare these days.

Hey Chris another great video, Good job getting out this info. I have 2 PRS. One of them is the DGT model and the other silver sky. I have had good luck with both of them. They are not a gibson or fender but are there own breed.

I ordered one from Sweetwater. It showed up with a bowed and somewhat twisted neck. Sent it back for an exchange. The second one had numerous issues. Sent it back and got a Les Paul that made me very happy. YMMV.

You should play the lottery. Finding a PRS SE with QC issues is very rare. You got two, and then a Les Paul without any. That combined is like hitting the jackpot twice.

I absolutely love my Blue SE Hollowbody II piezo. It "just fits" me. I also love the wide fat neck on it. Having separate ports for the magnetic pickups and piezo pickup offer tons of variety of sounds. I run magnetics to my Blackstar HT40 amp and piezo to my fishman accoustic 40 amp. Takes care of everything I need for my sets. The most expensive SE, but there is a reason why. My SE Custom 24 with the wide thin neck is for shredding, my Hollowbody II Piezo covers everything else.

    I started with a Cutom 24 a long time ago. 😂
    Still remember that day.
Since then the SE line brought me a 245,Mira,2 Hollowbody with piezo and a NF3.
    Love them all.
    Might need adult supervision. 😂😂

I own an American CE24. I absolutely love it.
It all started with a shipping damaged 2017 SECU24 I got for a decent discout. Before that I had pretty much sworn off PRS guitars. Once I got it in I couldn't help but marvel at how good the fretwork was, how good the neck felt, and the overall fit and finish of the guitar. Its only went downhill (in a positive way) from there. Now in 2024 I own 5 PRS electrics, including 2 American made ones, and a PRS acoustic as well.
Anyway I'm not convinced the new Indonesian plant has their qc department completely up to speed, but the SE can still be a very good guitar. I would just recommend going to the store and seeing 2 or 3 examples of the same guitar and picking the one you like the best.
Anyway the SE custom 24 is excellent. My wife purchased a Zach Myers a while ago. It has some finish flaws, but it plays and sounds amazing.
I recently picked up an SE Silversky. No complaints there and it fills the S-type guitar void in my collection good enough to make my ears happy. I also , as I mentioned earlier, purchased a 2021 CE24 semi-hollow. It has been an amazing guitar. Very versatile,.lightweight, an amazing neck and excellent playable. It did have some finish chipping problems. It was sent back to PRS and they fixed it right up with no hassle. They also gave me a decent discount on converting the guitar over to the 24-08 switching system. A good guitar made even more amazing.
I did recently play the flame top version of the SECE24. The neck edges weren't as rolled as my American CE, or even my SECE24. The neck was also a bit wider.
Anyway, aside from the initial adjustment period... really 30 seconds in I was really digging it. While not as refined as the American CE24.... it did capture the basic mojo of the CE and if I was a regularly gigging musician, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one as a workhorse guitar. I was really impressed.
Lastly, I recently purchased a used 2017 Core Custom 24 in excellent condition for a great price. The guitar, like my other PRS guitars, and even more so is a dream to play. So effortlessly. Aside from that its also beautiful, despite not being a 10 top. Is it worth 5k... well is any guitar really? Idk. But for half that price, I have no complaints.
As for PRS pickups... on the SE with the push/pull, or the 24-08 with the mini-toggles... they use a resistor so that when the coil is split the other coil remains partially active. Thats why they stay somewhat noiseless, and don't loose too much volume. I love the split sounds. No, it won't replace your strat, but it is a very nice clean tone and adds more tonal options.
The LT pickups stand for "low turn". In theory, they are gonna be more vintage toned. The 85/15s are a more modern tight sounding pickup with a full range sound. Very even frequency response when compared to say something like burstbuckers. I am finding I prefer the non tci 85/15 pickup to the tci version. Seems slightly less compressed and a bit more expressive .
Anyway I've probably rambled on long enough. In the end I absolutely love my PRS guitar's now at almost 40 which is hilarious because in my 20s I said... "No way I'd ever pay that much $ for a stupid POS guitar!".
Last note... everyone talks about swapping the 85/15s pickups out on the SE. They really.are a versatile pickup and can cover a wide variety of tones, especially if you know how to work the EQ and or tone knobs in your gear. I do find (on my helix) that PRS do seem more amp sensitive. Some amps really bring out the tone of a PRS, and others really kill the tone, where as my LP with Burstbuckers pretty much just sounds the same-ish through multiple amps. 🤷‍♂️
    Anyway cool vid!

Oh as for the dip switches, it gives you 2 more tonal options over the p/p tone. Also the switches can be faster to manipulate vs the p/p. They (part of the extra tones) allow you to have only the bridge or only the neck as a single and the other as a humbucker... works great for example if you like the sound of a neck single coil, but want to quickly switch to the bridge for some higher gain stuff by only hitting your 3way switch vs switch and whacking the tone knob.
I'm torn between the dipswitches on my CE24-08 vs the 5 way blade on my Custom 24.
On the core 24 the 5 way gives you (on a single switch) neck hum, dual single, dual hum, split neck with hum bridge, and bridge.
Also the stoptail on the ZM... I'm pretty sure it's the exact same on they use on the core line.

Last note.. I added the graphtec ghost piezo saddles and board to my SECU24. Very cool tones.

PRS makes really good guitars. I have two now. The first one I bought was a se custom 24-08 and it’s a really good guitar. Then I bought my next prs custom 24 and it’s a great guitar. Since I’ve started getting involved into prs guitars I don’t really touch my Gibson or fender hardly ever anymore

I had a conversation with my brother about PRS, I was digging the Silver Sky SE and asked his thoughts about it. He said it's a great guitar, very popular, but it's not for him. He thinks it's blasphemous to have a strat with the PRS headstock 😅

😂 I got the swamp ass special in charcoal and I love it. Thing rips in country and blues etc. I predominantly play metal and hardcore and it holds?! I love this guitar. Long live the swamp ass king!!!

PRS sound great obviously but for some reason my brain associates them with clean or crunch blues or jazz .. or post grunge 2000s rock obviously

I graduated high school in 1999 when Creed was exploding and Carlos Santana's Supernatural came out that summer. Of course, I hated all of it and would slowly associate PRS with a lot of the music that I didn't enjoy. Probably should've went into that more on the episode, but I didn't want to turn the episode into Mr bashing post grunge. Thanks for tuning in as always!

Sound demos need to include known references like a strat/LP because without it I certainly cant tell whats guitar and whats manipulated.

SE Silver Sky can be had for $550 or less plenty of listings around this price, this is a solid guitar not just for students. Anyone that is still on that band wagon that it is a strat clone, well they shouldn't be watching videos on PRS guitars 🥸 I now own, 6 PRS guitars including the Hollowbody II Piezo ($899 several listings on Reverb at that price point) and each time the value vs quality ratio continues to blow me away. Set up, finish and fit from the factory is spotless. I had bought Gibsons and Fenders on the higher end that were setup horribly from the factory. As soon as you hold that PRS on your hands you know you got a quality instrument no matter the line. Before the Fender and Gibson snobs get all bent out of shape... not saying PRS is better, all I'm saying is you will get your money's worth at any of their lines compared to their competitors.
