- James Fleay, an engineer and project manager in the energy sector, joins Dr. Keefer to discuss the "Hydrogen Alliance" proposed between Canada and Germany.
This Hydrogen Alliance is coming under increasing scrutiny due to allegations of a conflict of interest arising out of the Premier of Newfoundland, Andrew Furey's luxury trip to a lodge owned by Canadian billionaire John Risley this summer. Risley happens to be one of the principal investors in a project called Nujio’qonik, one of three projects competing to be part of the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance alongside EverWind Fuels in Nova Scotia and the Port of Belledune project in New Brunswick.
Beyond a potential political scandal lies a very real energy scandal. Fleay describes the chemistry, thermodynamics, and economics required to turn electrons generated by wind turbines in Canada into ammonia to be shipped across the Atlantic to be burned in German Power plants, a process which he describes as being "The least efficient way to get electrons on the German grid imaginable." Decouple takes a look at who will foot the bill and who will profit. The total output of the Canada German Hydrogen Alliance which requires a near doubling of Canada's total national wind fleet, expensive electrolysis equipment, ammonia production through the energy intensive Haber Bosch process, large scale shipping and potential energy hungry reconversion to hydrogen for burning as fuel in German thermal plants is almost equal to the output of a single German nuclear station, ISAR 2, one of the three remaining nuclear plants still under threat of closure in Germany. With the myth of cheap Canadian exportable hydrogen as a tool to replace Russian natural gas busted we examine Canada's only truly green and ultra low carbon energy export: its nuclear technology and uranium which is already used in near carbon free power plants domestically and around the world offsetting a full 1/3 of Canada's total all sector emissions. Hang onto your hats. This is an interesting one.

We need to reduce our use of fossil fuels. The resource is not endless. But lies involving CO2 do not help. People are not stupid. We need nuclear power and we even more need reactors the fully burn the fuel. That prevents there being any long term waste and gets 20x as much power per unit of fuel.
Hate to bust your bubble, this is gonna run on hydroelectricity. Odd the video makers didn't know this but we constructed massive hydroelectricity capacity with no way for that energy to get to market, problem of being on an island and all that. It's pretty clear this is gonna end up being fueled by hydroelectric.

The turbines are located on the Port au Port Peninsula NL.Residents are against this but seems like all who are involved could careless.Residents were not notified of these being put on our beautiful land and already 1 communities watershed was ruined.Residents are furious and this is just the start.Residents have been picketing for weeks now to stop this but it seems the Premier and the GH2 are ignoring them.We will fight as long as it takes to push these people out.164 turbines on a little Peninsula is just ridiculous.

one use of ammonia that's not talked about is to combine this with CO2 to make urea that turns out to be a good solid fertilizer.
only good if you don't want to do regenerative ag. urea based fertilisers "burn" the life out of soils. they kill all the useful biota in the soil. also is responsible for most of the global nitrous oxide GHG emissions. Nitrous oxide is 100x as potent as CO₂.
Look at new geothermal power, it may be a good part of the energy solution.
They use oil drilling rigs, don’t go extremely deep and use sterling engines to generate power.
They are using a temperature difference as the energy source.

Exceptional discussion. I am slowly coming around to the opinion that we need to use nuclear energy strategically. That said, you made a remark that makes me squirm. Paraphrasing - "Too bad the Germans aren't running the French reactors." How do we get owners and operators of nuclear plants who will have the integrity to abide by safety regulations, and refuse to cut corners? These plants should [almost] always be operated in that manner. Yet, I stumble across stories, without actively searching for them, of willful corner cutting - sometimes with whistle blowers getting fired. Leaves me gnashing my teeth a bit.
Nuclear was always subsidized with your hard earned money, besides the lack of integrity in that field.

Nope, as a German, I can assure you that most of the energy is not going into agriculture, and btw. we have similar contracts about hydrogen with at least one North African country where the hydrogen is to be delivered with a pipeline.
As an industrial country, we need hydrogen to replace coal and oil, for example, in the steel and chemical industry.
However, since our politicians, like most politicians on the planet, are very incompetent, they also want to use hydrogen for electricity production, heating supplied with pipes, cars, and to produce "E-fuels" (synthetic fuels) for cars. None of those uses make any sense to me, since I think it is more efficient to produce electricity with wind and solar, store it with sodium-ion batteries to stabilize the grid, and use it for EVs and heat pumps. Above that, E-fuels are not very environmentally friendly even if they don't release CO2 or at least reduce CO2 emissions, but the fumes will kill thousands of people per year and cause chronic diseases for almost 900,000 people permanently (Asthma and Type 2 Diabetes).
But I disagree with you on nuclear power, which is much too expensive. In the US, two projects with SMRs (Utah 6 reactors, and Idaho) have been canceled, in the UK the costs of Hinkley Point C (operational start planned 2026) have exploded to approximately 46 Billion £ (almost 59 Billion US $), in Finnlands Olkiluoto the cost of the last reactor have quadrupled and the plans for the next reactor have been shelved. Germany shut down its last reactors in April 2023, In Australia, the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Australias National Science Agency, has evaluated the costs of the cheaper new SMRs and came to the result, that currently the price per MWh would be 509 AUD (340 US$) and can be expected to decrease to 282 AUD (189 US$) in the future. But since the price for renewables also is expected to decrease, the result of CSIRO was, that nuclear energy is currently not an economically competitive solution for Australia.

No, they are using fresh water sources to purify, then release the removed contaminates in high concentrations into our oceans as effluent. The result will directly impact our groundfish and other aquatic species
Wind output has a cubic relation with wind speed. At rated speed = 100%. At 1/3 speed down by 27 times = 3.7 %.
And there's an *_upper threshold_* of wind speed, beyond which turbine output is zero.
Putting the liquefication issue in to oerspective, you lose aporoximately 10% of the energy content of natural gas and for hydrogen, liquefication consumes approximately 30% of the energy content.
One UT channel here was calculating, from turning the windmill, to turning the wheels of an EV, that the combined efficiency is just 16%
The electricity price in Denmark had for some days in the last couple of months been over 400 euro per MWh, so 200 USD per MWh for the complex canadian ammonium electricity is cheaper than I had expected, even though the current situation here is getting very alarming, bakeries, supermarkets and restaurants are going bankrupt due to high energy costs, and people can no longer afford to charge their hybrid cars. No doubt nuclear energy is the only viable solution for Europa to this horrible situation. We cannot even contact our utility supplier as many have of these companies have closed their phones as they have given up on talking to people who cannot pay their electricity bills and are crying and asking for later payment, discounts etc. This is just the short story, our pension funds are also being robbed by these energy bandits you were talking about. Ørsted and Copenhagen Infrastructure Projects are milking the system and the backmen a getting extremely rich from these shady projects, with absolutely on positiv impact on the climate. Corrupt persons inside the pension funds and in the energy bandits are collaborating and authorities who should keep an eye on these financial entities have turned the blind eye to it, as it done to save the planet. Under contract, Hydro Quebec electricity goes to USA. If they need more, it must be imported back from Ontario. They sell it to USA for pennies on dollar the dollar, but buy back for much more. Huge power transmission losses.

I guess you don't understand the German psyche very well. Besides the German Angst there is, in my opinion, the Total War Syndrom. To explain: every medal has its flip side. The Germans are logical and consequential. When they have decided something they go for it and implement it all the way. That's why they are so efficient. What it takes is that you have to be consequential. They are! The flip side is, once they are decided they turn blind to argument, and instead keep going, AGAINST all the evidence. For proof I take the "total war" speech of Dr Goebbels. Unfortunately it's happening again, this time in the war against global warming.
So yes, they were and they are thinking of shipping amonia to Germany to fire hydrogen gas power plants. It's the ultimate nonsense, but it was in 2022 and still is in 2023 official firm policy of the German state, under the PM Scholz, that you cited in the intro of your podcast.
About 10 years ago I was in Berlin in a utility company that operates one of the largest nuclear fleets in Europe. At lunch with my German colleagues, formerly EON, another formerly large nuclear operator, it was just generally agreed, an accepted fact, that you have to stop nuclear. They cannot think outside of the consequence of the decision that the Merkel administration took, no way!
Like economics, politics are not rational, but behavioural. Rationality serves to dress our behaviour in decent clothes, most of the time it is no more.

Hydrogen is a non starter. The power losses in the varius processes. From converting something into heat, then converting that heat into electricity, then transmission then converting that into hydrogen. Then transporting the stuff. It does not add up. However there is a naturally occuring material called mineral oil. It does everything at a fraction of the cost.

The hydrogen story was dismissed in chemistry classes as too dangerous to be a fuel, even for electric catalytic cells, back in the 60s except for satellites maybe.

Nuclear is the most expensive and the most centalized source of energy. Renewables are the least expensive and that is why financial interests prefer the more expensive sources like hydrogen.

Wealth can support a lot of grift on the way to failure.
The only thing I can say is that the electrolysis process that can produce hydrogen and oxygen from water can pump that oxygen and hydrogen across the world free of charch, because having backpressure on the electrolyte electrolytic process does not hinder the production of hydrogen or oxygen so others in the pipeline that you would. Need to move this stuff. There's really no limit to how far you could pump hydrogen and oxygen from the process of electrolysis that saves a lot of energy and getting oxygen. The hospitals let's say or other industrial processes and pumping hydrogen to the far reaches of the country.

I don't agree with you on your basic geo political reasoning in this conversation.
To start with Russia did not invest into a pipeline to Europe, at such high expense, to then use it to be shut down for political reasons.
This was the most economical form of energy for Europe.
Any large energy projects nuclear or otherwise always have been highly subsidized with taxpayers money and yet taxpayers never end up benefiting in any way down the road. In fact in most cases these facilities are usually privatized for pennies on the dollar.
The technology to energy self-sufficiency for each home or business has been in existence for over 80 years but no political jurisdiction will ever encourage or support such a system.
This is what you should investigate and support more rather than this incessant support of having a few hands reaching into every ones pocket to enrich themselves and at the same time enslaving the rest of us.

Germany doesn't have a shortage of electrons. power flow in AC current sees electrons move "back and forth" at 50-60 Hz - they "oscillate", they don't "flow" from generation to appliance. seriously no expertise from this expert. Germany is in need of hydrogen for its steel industry's. Which are at the core of most of german export production. Hydrogen is the only why to replace coal in blast furnaces for iron smelting.

Could you convert oil burning ships into nuclear power, the emissions from the that would put a big dent in the environment. I think the shipping industry needs to be updated internationally to have certification standards for safety and reliability, to many ships are registered in third world countries and don't have to follow a minimum certification. I think we have a bigger problem with the ships in the world that has been sunk do to wars and storms the pollution killing the fishing grounds. Cheers
Fascinating! But my end conclusion is Degrowth. The most productive research will be that which looks at economics without growth. There are plenty of countries whos populations are responding to the intrinsic incentives of capitalism which is to stop breeding. Japan, Taiwan, China etc . .. even countries that tolerate immigration are finding their desired source countries have shrinking populations. Nuclear simply cannot be scaled fast enough. A lost cause already. I am sceptical about food. The excess and inappropriate, subsidized, food production in the rich west is also a crime against the planet.
You know Germany used to have a way to transport hydrogen around. They called them airships. Shame one accident seems to have erased the idea of lighter than air from consideration. It would be nice if people would rethink it. Of note. methane is also lighter than air, and could be potentially transported to Europe at atmospheric pressure in airships, or even just HDPE bags tied to seafaring ships like balloons.
It's all about the number of atoms. 1 turbine would inhale one balloon full of hydrogen in about 5 minutes.
@@Marley-ii6ls Depends on how big the 'balloon' is. If people wanted to, they could make some very big 'balloons'. Companies already manufacture plastic sheeting in large sizes. I don't think it would be that much of a technical difficulty to turn that into large 'bags' that could be filled with lighter than air gasses, and towed across the ocean like giant 'balloons'.

Let get this straight so ice engine today gives everyone efficiency of around 20% but the host is outraged at wind energy to ammonia to electricity efficiency of 23%. It seems like fake outrage to me. Word.
The difference is oil is cheap so 20 - 30% efficiency is cheap.
Hydrogen is a big Rube Goldberg machine after you factor in the cost of the infrastructure, maintenance, and labor hydrogen efficiency drops to 0% or even potentially negative.
Hydrogen is a worse idea than corn ethanol.
In the distant future when we have 400% excess energy hydrogen will start to be a reasonable option.
can't electrolyse distilled water, need something to make it conduct current and the salt from sea water works well for that purpose :)
You need pure water so the process does not get gummed up. Similar to requiring pure water for a car battery, which makes hydrogen.

Haven’t Decouple group considered Battery storage which Tesla Elon Musk has been doing in Australia, Hawaï, Porto Rico ect….Elon Musk was mentioning that one square mile of solar farm could sustain all electrical needs of the whole United State. Maybe this 37:54 should be considered for all the electricity needed to assist this Canadian project with Germany?
These batteries can store the equivalent of 1 to 2 hrs of grid power. That's not a viable option when the wind stops for longer periods of time.
Batteries cost too much to be used for grid storage beyond 4 hours max. Then they need to be replaced and recycled.😢 Batteries are expensive.

@ For example how we make sure the power plants don't melt down and destroy half of the country they are in...
Or that they produce waste that takes thousands of years to get harmless without any option to actually store it for that long savly...
Or if you are talking nuclear fusion reactor that a viable version doesn't even exist yet.
Or that they use up fuel like coal or gas power plants, which will get harder and harder to get eventually just like the others. It therefor isn't a renewable energy source...

@@nitram1737 okay, there are lots of realiable and safe designs. Not every reactor is RBMK, and even these are safe if not ran by a bunch of idiots. PWRs, CANDUs, molten salt based designs...
There has never been a single death handling spent nuclear fuel, and we still perceive it as something we can not control. We can. And it is too valuable to bury it somewhere, where it could not be dug out and reused. IDK, nuclear power has a PR problem, not an engineering one.
