In this video I once again quiz my kid brother Michael, aka ‪@DrCellini‬ on some veterinary boards questions. He passed (barely) on the first round of questions earlier this year, so let's see if he can repeat his prior "success". If you know of any other medical professionals who should try their hand at a veterinary board exam, feel free to let me know and/or give them a shout. Stay well everybody!
    Here's part 1:

If you're a vet and in need of consultation for a patient with neurologic disease, please consider my website www.vetneuroconsult.com. You can go on there and book an appointment with me to review a case. I set the prices to be well below what I know to be the average cost of a neurologist consultation in person, based on my experience. Thanks and I look forward to helping you!

I recently became a member of the Balto community. Balto makes braces for dogs and I plan to use the neck braces for cases of cervical spinal instability. I think these braces are less cumbersome and much easier to place compared to traditional bandaging measures. If you think your pet may benefit from a brace of some kind, here is the link to their website:

Bit late, but usually if someone were doing a gait assessment, they would generally describe the actual findings of "lameness" (not a word we would use). In the case of a limp consistent with being from pain, it would be antalgic gait.

Just started my second year of vet school and got 4/6 right! (I could give myself credit for high ringbone but I couldn’t actually remember which joint was high vs low). I saw the collapsing trachea in the first one pretty easily. Cerebellar hypoplasia is one of my favorite things (comes up a lot due to TikTok I find). Had no clue on the neurologic disorder one. Cerebral edema gave me very intense flashbacks to my emergency and critical care class. The immune reactions were also a bit of a shot in the dark for me, but I got there in the end. Amazing how much I forgot over the summer after taking immunology in the spring! But if I can keep up with the younger Dr. Cellini at this point in my education I’m pretty pleased.

As a horse owner they clarified consistently visible at the trot because that neans its not consistent at the walk and it isnt intermittent which affects the grade of lameness and if they can be comfortable as being just like a normal ass field pet.

Curious how I would do as a 25+ year standard vet... everything-not-a-vet, I was following along and pausing. I got a 50%, but in my defense I've never worked for a horse vet! Still, I guess you're not passing your veterinary boards without some large animal training so I get what I deserved. I will say, tho, that at normal vet level, we don't treat collapsing trachea. We'd put the pet on a diet (8/9???), recommend harness-only slow walks, and avoid any unnecessary excitement, recheck in 2-3 months to see how the diet is progressing.

  • @ashram12

"Lame" is a word used for human limping as well. Maybe not a medical term, and maybe it's insensitive to use that term nowadays, but it's definitely been used to describe limping people.

My dog had a collapsed trachea (was misdiagnosed as an allergic cough)...and weitdly enough I got that answer correct even though I'm not a doctor and never studied medicine. The black line, which apparently was the trachea, looked weird to me and I figured no medicine/chemicals could fix that.

Dr. Cellini, I'm a great admirer of your videos. I'm a veterinarian who loves all these other "professionals react" videos (Mama Dr. Jones, Dr. Mike, Legal Eagle) - but I'm a very private person/work in public health veterinary medicine and will never ever do one myself (maybe if its outbreak and contagion but literally only those two movies so I've got a limited future youtube career). I made these same suggestions to another UA-cam veterinarian but he shortly stopped making videos, maybe you would like them?
    Reaction video ideas:
#1) Episodes of Animal Practice - I thought this was going to be like the veterinary version of scrubs with comedy mixed in with true hard-hitting moments that veterinary medicine actually deals with. Nope. This is not at all real. Poor representation of vet med (and overall bad show). Please review!
#2) Multiple episodes of Burn Notice - they use veterinarians to illegally stitch people up instead of going to a hospital, and in one episode they get fentanyl from a veterinarian to sell in some drug deal (it's been a few years). When I saw that episode I was outraged. Like...hello...we have DEA licenses too.
#3) Grey's Anatomy - The main character dates a veterinarian for half a season. Several great scenes to review. All the vet hatred from the surgical interns! What the heck! Also potential for reviewing osteosarc in dogs - Meredith goes to her human orthopedic surgeon friend to ask for advice instead of the veterinarian. Sounds like something fun for you and your brother??
#4) did you know that Adam Sandler is a vet in 50 first dates? Maybe do you know any marine mammal vets who could laugh/cringe at that movie with you?
Personally I'd also just love to see more of your (and your wife!) discussions about the reality of vet med and moral dilemmas that most people don't understand.
Thank you for all you are doing for the veterinary community ❤️

  • @DemstarAus

Knowing nothing about it I imagine lameness scale refers to at what stage of movement the horse is unable to walk, 1/5 being unable to gallop and 5/5 being unable to stand? Unless a lame horse can still stand and there's a missing movement type, being whatever that weird icelandic canter is called.
Also horses have a bunch of diseases and I'm frankly suprised they don't regularly combust at random.

Vet school is harder to get into than medical school. Vets are smarter than human doctors. Vets hav to know everything about all different animals - snakes, elephants, birds, giraffes, dolphins, cows, penguins, horses, guinea pigs, bears, iguanas, kangaroos -- and know the difference between male and female and know what drugs these animals can or cant take. A human doctor just deals with humans -- the only variation is male/female and child/adult.
