Just here to tell you it’s absolutely possible to pan for silver. I am panning for garnets and gold in Montana right now. Silver has a density of 10.49g/cm cubed and garnet has a density of 4.3g/cm cubed. If you’re ever wondering if something is possible to pan for it most likely is because most of the stuff that you wanna pan for is decently dense.
I wondered that for along time why they never panned it now we know it works so your going to have a lot more silver nice I wished I lived near places like this what fun you get to have.
I’m watching this trying to learn to pan for gold and maybe silver. I’m an amateur metal detector but wanna get into finding the earths natural riches. And maybe one day start a small mining project if I ever find good ground.
I don't know how many "book ends"or drink coasters you sell,but have you ever thought of cutting some of that ore into tile?ive heard that it would be expensive tile but hey it become popular and create a new niche.Las Vegas could use a casino tiled in shiny silver ore.nevada is the silver state.Cool video by the way
A really interesting suggestion and I have heard it before, but never tried cutting for tiles. There are some fireplaces in northern Ontario where the rock was from the mines and the stone has silver. Heck, there are some driveways with crush from the mines and I know of at least one where silver can be detected. Perhaps, I will give it a try.
Thanks for the video I bought a K&M rock crusher. I been trying figure out how to pan talcum power silver ore like dust 100-200 Mesh i heard you have to roast the ore in oven get oxygen out to keep it from over heating your crucible.
When you cut through some of those rock with lots of silver in them, I've thought, wow, you're losing the kerf width of the blade in silver every pass you make. Maybe not a big deal, but it'd be great if you could recover it.

I suspect the silver sulfide, being soluble in water, would wash out of the pan. Pyrargyrite should be caught with careful panning and if big enough should be seen in the classifier. I did not have Pyrargyrite in these samples (that I know of - LOL). I have panned galena before and caught it when looking for gold. Whenever I see it, I am hoping for platinum, so it is a typically bit of a disappointment when it is "only" galena.
I have found platinum in the wild. Sometimes, you can also be confused when gold panning by mercury covered gold. However, lead bird shot is everywhere.
I don't know if I've rinsed enough with distilled water after using the muriatic acid? I hear muriatic acid is flammable and possibly explosive with most metals so now I'm scared to melt it down for that it's dried
Under normal circumstances, muriatic is not flammable. However, its reaction to some metals can make it so. As such, you are prudent to be careful. I think it can release hydrogen gas. I am not an expert in these matters. I have not experienced this with the things that I have etched. You may be etching something different. Once your material dries, I doubt there will be a problem, but you might want to try your next step with a very small sample. Cautious experimentation and research is typically the key to staying safe.
What kind of acid did you use for the silver? I also used crushed silver ore, and panned but mine had a lot of extra material with the silver that would not pan. So I wonder if I poured nitric acid inside my mason jar of the remain crushed material would the rest of the stone dissolve away from the silver?
Oh I see so if I just want to dissolve the rock and keep the silver from the rest of the dust and rock I should use diluted Muriatic acid? I'm assuming dilute it will distilled water?
So I got the muriatic acid if I add just the acid, will the silver be all that remains say if I leave it for a couple hours? And will I need any cooper to bring out any silver that goes into the solution? Sorry for so many questions you've just been super helpful
Dilute the muriatic and try (sacrifice) one sample to see what happens. Silver should not be affected, but hopefully other stuff in your sample should be. Add muriatic to water and not the other way around. Don't breath the fumes. It will work rather quickly. Don't dump the waste solution on anything you want to grow (ie. if it hits any plants, it will kill them just like Roundup). I would start with maybe 75% water. You should not need to take anything out of the solution when you are done. The silver should be at the bottom (of your plastic bowl). Let me know how it works out for you.
I recently went gold panning no visible gold. I did find lots of tiny garnets and some grey looking metal, I did not save any of it. Maybe i should have saved it... could have been silver or platinum. I did save some quartz for crushing. Next time I will save the grey looking metal as well and test it some how.
Normally, you will not find placer silver in streams. It is possible, but unlikely. I think it gets crushed too easily. For platinum, one quick thing to do is look at the flakes with a jeweler's optic. If they look nuggety (like a gold nugget looks), for sure keep it. Also, if you are in an area where there was historic placer gold, then it is also possible that the old timers were using mercury and it will sometimes coat the gold making it look grey.
Now that I think about it It looked like a crystal structure not nuggety reminded me of a pencil lead that was broke. It has me curious now I want to know what it is.. I was somewhere In the georgia mountains I will keep Your advice in mind for next time. Thanks for reply good stuff there!
I've been panning and sluiced a few times, gray metal is almost always lead. If not then lucky you but I would bet it is.. and if you're finding lead it's not always a bad thing it is really heavy like gold and would settle in the same area as gold.

For sure, I have found my share of bullets when sniping or panning. I have also found platinum and mercury covered gold. Placer silver in creeks is very rare. In this video, I was panning the shavings from what I knew was silver ore. Otherwise, I too would have assumed it was something else.
You could be right about the losses into the wheel barrel. I did not eyeball any floating out of the pan, but I probably lost silver. Deep down, I was hoping to see a flake of gold, but it was not to be...I don't think it would be economic to pan or sluice for silver. You are much better off looking for nuggets and ore. This was just for fun.
Probably not silver unless there was a mine or refinery right there. If it really acts like gold, then you hope for platinum. More likely molybdenum or other metal, but test it. For sure, not gopher poop. Good luck

@@california8118 Big flakes add up. Little colours are just indicators as to where to dig. Good for you checking out a critter hole. It brought up deeper dirt without you having to go thru the effort. Make sure you are not panning out pyrites or mica. Pyrite is heavy. Mica is not and does not act like gold.
True that. I have a buddy who had a few years of dust from his saw melted by another friend. I think he started with about 60 lbs and ended up with 20 pounds of dore. Dore is melted with the rock and some minerals removed but not refined. The resulting bars are nice.
That is silver sulphides son, not pure silver. It rarely occurs in nature. Almost never see it in the pan. Unlike free gold that can come out almost pure (up to 22K) Silver almost never shows up sulphide free.
Agreed. In these rocks probably also cobalt, nickel, arsenic and other heavies in the pan. I have found nuggets and vein material from this area which were almost pure silver.
Don't you have an Oz there Bud? Question. I know silver tarnishes black or dark grey. Do you find or recognize silver that is a black? I found a super big nugget but something didn't look right to me. I wondered if it were platinum. So like a dumbass I threw a torch on it. And it melted into what looked like fine silver. It's official , I'm a complete dick head. I found it breaking up some hard rock deposits. There are so few silver nuggets. I'm a complete fool. I was looking for gold but I'm finding some silver. I watched you several times. I'm diggen it. I ground a window on a black ore and low and behold. It was shiny but I thought it was just rock. I layed a 30X loupe on it and it looks like pure metal. This one rock is 2100 grams or about 74 troy OZ. Oh Baby! Daddy needs a new pair of shoes. Keep up the good work. And Thanks for your shows. I like.
Give the black stain a rub to see if you can expose bright silver. I use my pants and/or another rock. There are some other metals which might look the same including galena and zinc, so it is just an indicator. Best next step might be an XRF analysis or if you have lots, a fire assay

IMHO: Feedback in the comments is helpful, but a random dislike on a small channel is poor form. It only serves to discourage someone who is trying their best. There is one person who watches all of my videos and hits the dislike button (on most) within the first few minutes of a posting. I think I know who it is because it has happened since I had only a handful of subs. I am actually amused by it. I typically see it happen within 5 minutes of a long video being posted, so they did not even watch to the end. If they don't like the videos, I wonder why they continue to subscribe? in panning for silver, won't you lose the silver sulfides? what about galena and the ruby silvers?

Use Baking soda to neutralize any spilled Muriatic acid.

I am pretty sure that nitric will dissolve the silver into the solution (nothing left to pan). I used diluted HCL (aka muriatic acid).

Distilled water is good, but not absolutely necessary for this.
