S W Motech also make magnetic tank bags (Pro City) that are probably the most useful item you can get if it will fit your bike. I have everthing S W Motech for all my bikes. All quality, lasting probably longer than us. Storage area between your arms that is just wasted and valuable space. 👍👍

I got the KTM branded Touratech Evo panniers for my 1290 SAS. Even though I don't own that bike anymore, they're still my favorite panniers on any bike I've owned. Looks like they have a Zega EVO X now, which contours around the exhaust. While they're not perfectly symmetrical, I think they look much better.
SW-Motech's stuff looks very similar, and they have a good reputation, so you probably can't go wrong with either. Both are spendy, but at least I can vouch for the Touratech build quality. They saw every riding condition and never failed me.
I'm like you on the side loaders not being my preference. I definitely prefer the top loaders, but I really love how symmetrical my R1250RT panniers are. They're not awful, but you do need a little more finesse loading loose items into them. I have the bag inserts for when I'm touring, and that mostly solves that problem.
Check out the new SW-Motech Dusc bags. They are side loading though. SW-Motech has their US headquarters and showroom in Beaverton.
That saddle on the RT is a Russell Day Long.
Have one my my FJR and you can eat up the miles in complete comfort!! Russel day long is best on the custom market!
