  • There are questions about the Canadian military's fleet of Navy helicopters, called the Cyclones, after a crack discovered in one led to inspections that detected cracks in 18 others.
    The cracks are the latest in a growing list of issues with the Cyclones, including a software problem that caused one of the helicopters to crash off the coast of Greece last year, killing all six service members on board.
    Ross Lord reports on what the latest discovery could mean for the future of the choppers.

    Once again our military procurement shows its incompetence. Everything from simple clothing to the most advanced equipment is botched.

    Just like the Brits selling us defective subs, these duds prove the absolute incompetence of our procurement department in government. The wise person would bring experts to "test drive" the equipment before purchase and verify its bona fide status by looking at accident, observation and repair records. There is a reason why the countries that sold these duds to us and there must be a paper trail to support that. IF a country fails to produce ALL relevant documentation on given purchase, then that purchase should be looked upon as suspect and maybe a bad idea to procure. We are, of course, sinking billions of dollars into these purchases so absolute diligence is mandatory. To do otherwise is foolish.

      No, the Canadian government bought the subs under a "buyer beware" policy. They didn't have to.

    What is about Canadian purchasing agents that when it comes to military equipment, subs burned and helicopters not up to the job. Federal government has to get better at purchasing equipment instead of killing our troops by bad purchases.

    Why did they need a special helicopter just for the RCN?? Why not a Seahawk or Merlin that would have been off the shelf ready to go and parts available??????

    • @gryph01
      @gryph01 2 роки тому +7

      It doesn't matter what helicopter we bought, it would have been Canadianized. We have different systems. We were originally going to buy the EH-101. But a new government came in, cancelled the project. Then we bought the Sikorsky. Less aircraft for more money and a 10 year delay...

      Weird purchasing process ,
      Every item is or be customized ,
      Or it's just NOT- CANADIANized if it's off the shelf .
      Same with food ,
      we have canadian bacon , not just bacon .
      Hold on , I know it's just NOT the same, , , but bacon should be the same , bacon.. .

    The whole procurement system needs to be overhauled. The current system is being "gamed" by contractors to extract as much money as possible from the taxpayers for the least expenditure from their part. The military should also have more of a say over what gets selected other than just giving a list of requirement. That's how we end up almost always buying overpriced cheap junk that is half-assedly adapted to technically meet those requirements but was never actually intended to be used in the way our military uses it and ends up never working properly in real life.
    Politicians should also not be allowed to interfere in the procurement process. They seem to can't help but blatantly waste huge amounts of taxpayer dollars and cause significant unnecessary delays by cancelling procurement programs that were adopted by the previous government whenever there's a change of government for nothing but petty political reasons.

    If crack (metal fatigue) develops in the bearing shaft (on rotary), it will lead to eventual separation of rotor from the main fuselage of aircraft - you can see the example of this in the crash of CHC Helikopter Service EC225 Super Puma helicopter on April 29, 2016. Cracks on tail is different than rotary metal fatigue in this case - it could be more or less a structural integrity being compromised due to many various reason...I am sure experts and Sikorsky will be deeply involved in resolving this issue.

  • @redcat9436
    @redcat9436 2 роки тому +2

    While this is unfortunate it isn't uncommon for aircraft and especially helicopters to develop structural cracks.

  • @1984shadow
    @1984shadow 2 роки тому +1

    This cracking is an on going issue even in the previous Navel helicopters. There maybe an metallurgy issue here in not having the properties to withstand the constant vibration. Can the metal formula be changed to increase the durability of such extreme vibration. Otherwise the "PATCH WORK" will also fail in time.

      You and I could not afford to run it for 2 hours. People driving their Honda Civic or Corvette C8 have no understanding of what it takes to buy one of these, maintain it, and fuel it. While folks may be critical of the government & CF they have no idea of the training involved before you can enter this aircraft. Even with intense training accidents happen. Military aircraft, even old ones, are so far beyond the everyday experience of Canadians driving their cars or pleasure boats.

    It's easy to speak of procurement from the armchair. We will not know for years if this is a one off or if other problems will arise within the Cyclone as it ages. I'm reminded of what the media shared concerning the F-111 during the Vietnam War. Later on the F-111 was touted as a great aircraft by the Americans and Australians. I can only conclude they got the bugs out and otherwise it was a great aircraft. It's hard to buy a sure thing and these things are complex, the Cormorant was supposed to be more perfected and CF have lost at least 2 on the East Coast. I do not know about the West Coast. I suspect, that like everything else, procurement people deal with limitations and with inside information we will never know.
