If the marine had acted wisely, then the nun would have relented. The church grants dispensation in certain circumstances as per the famous dialogues from Clint Eastwood movie "Two mules for Sister Sarah"
Of course if they redid this in modern woke times, the man would get captured trying to get food for them for the cave, the nun would decide she can no longer trust in an non-corporeal being that doesn't seem to answer the most basic needs and allows such evil to persist, and she would shed her items for combat gear and go rambo on the soldiers eliminating most while they slept and freeing the man. Together they would end kill the last soldiers (with her having to prop the man up several times or protect him), leading to a romantic scene after their success of course.
